Just out of curiosity what are some songs that give you guys some strong emotional reactions? In particular songs that bring back whatever memories you may have from the past and that you have now associated with the particular song. You don't need to tell a story behind the meaning of why the song gives you these feelings but if you would like to go ahead. I think it would be an interesting topic seeing how something like music can affect someone to the point that when you hear the song you are instantly brought back to a certain time and place.

Note: The song doesn't have to be metal necessarily.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9gcI3-1KjM

This song Port Hope by Evening Hymns brings back some strong memories from my college days and oh of course the old ex gf scenario lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xjg0Ip7TzzM

Promise by Ben Howard is another song that brings similar feelings to the previous one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4p5Vrl_ty4

Finally, a metal song and that doesn't have to do with an ex gf haha. Crying Orc by Burzum was the very first song that I heard that made me "get" black metal. I had always previously listened to deathcore/metalcore and there was something in this song that clicked in me and made crave more and more of this kind of music. 5 years later black metal makes up about 90% of the metal that I listen to.

Pretty much everything from Nagelfar. Their music is pure lamentation, an elegy to & through lost romanticistic/mythological visions. In that it is a bit like ancient Greek art of the Hellenistic period. But driven by passionate rage. Back when I discovered them I was overwhelmed with how intense those albums were. They were unlike anything I knew, and there still are very few bands that can compete with them when it comes to sheer emotional momentum.

Matte Kudasai by King Crimson. Just wow. From Adrian Belew's soaring vocals to that weeping guitar. This song always puts me into a thoughtful state of trance.

The first thing to come to mind is Rainbow's "Stargazer". The pounding melody of the chorus, the rising intensity of that crazy solo, and of course Dio's wondrous vocals, particularly towards the end. It all really brings a tear to my eye.

Since music is rooted in being such an emotional experience for me as a listener it's difficult to pinpoint specific songs but here are a few that come to mind anyway (and a little explanation as to why):

My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel
... reminds me of the first time I had my heart broken so, really, it's an obvious choice.

Burzum - Tomhet
... one of the most serene, peaceful and captivating pieces of music I have heard, thus reminding me of those late-nights where I was endowed with contentment in a state of serenity.

Katatonia - In The White
... makes me reflect on renewal and the idea that the burning of the old is required for the birth of the new.

Theatre Of Tragedy - And When He Falleth
... the lyrical sentiments mixed with the pristine sampling of The Masque Of Red Death make for a wondrous listening experience.

Emperor - Cosmic Keys To My Creations & Times
... the song that made me realize black metal could be a force of both harshness and beauty.

Drudkh - Wind Of The Night Forests
... the beauty of the natural world embodied through distorted guitars, screams, thundering drums, quaint keyboards and an incredible sense of melody/composition/flow; a song that validates what Emperor first brought unto me.

Alcest - Faiseurs De Mondes
... a song that, for whatever reason, makes me think of my finance and the positive, loving feelings that I have for her; the acoustic break in the middle is astounding.

Dissection - Thorns Of Crimson Death
... a song that tends to stimulate thoughts (both positive and negative) of winters past and I love the winter so it's a rather transparent choice.

Well, anyway, that's a few of them.

The first time I did DMT was to this song, now whenever I hear it, it's as if time slows down, and I get a strong sense of yearning to return.

Any song by Ramshackle Glory, they're all relatable and give me a great feeling of optimism.

Surrender by Cheap Trick.

I was toward the end of a stay at a mental hospital when I was allowed to visit some friends for a barbecue. At this time Guitar Hero had just come out and and my friends were raving about it and playing it at the barbecue. So I pick up the fake guitar and the first song I attempted was Surrender. Now I think Guitar Hero is a shit excuse for a video game, but whenever I hear Surrender, it reminds me of a time when I was starting to feel better after a lengthy bout of depression.

Maybe it's just me, but the song "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me" by Motörhead sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.

Rotting Christ-Orders from the Dead. Once you figure out what the hell the song's actually about and read up a little bit on what happened to the Greeks and Armenians at Smyrna/Izmir some of those lines are really poignant.

When running the past few months, "Ghost Division" by Sabaton has always given me an insane energy burst, especially each time Broden sings the line...

"First in the line of fire....first into hostile land...TANKS LEADING THE WAY!" (RIFF) "LEADING THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!"

That's a fists clenched, jet propulsion moment for sure.

Fixed that for you- Alcest is great for that and I often find myself listening to them when I want my mind to wander and dwell on things I don't normally think about. As for songs that really hit me I tend to prefer songs that illicit feelings of sadness and despair, I really like it when I can feel the pain coming from the music.

Mad World by Gary Jules: So somber, so sad, it just makes me feel for the guy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

Motorhead - God Was Never on Your Side: I love how I can related with Lemmy on this one, just the feeling of being all alone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6UfqI5ovQI

Collective Soul - The World I Know: Another somber song but what really made me love this song was the 9/11 tribute version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9_VPMrPXc0

DC Talk - What if I Stumble: This one speaks more for my Christian beliefs and inner struggles that come along with that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg6HedZ4xGs

Gardenian - Tell the World I'm Sorry: I really love this whole album but I feel this song is the peak of bleakness and despair in it.

I love a lot video game music and get an emotional response from a lot of that stuff, if this counts? I'm completely in love with The Wonderful 101's OST at the moment.

There are tons of such songs but the first ones immediately coming to my mind are these:

Marillion "Childhood's End"
Of course it's not the actual meaning of the lyrics but to me personally the chorus always directly brings up images
of my great childhood and early teen days from which I still draw some kind of, hmmm, *pathetic* mental energy
everyday. Really there's not one single day even now with 36 where I don't think of at least one or the other
event, situation, toy, cartoon, "adventure" (what you though of as an adventure back then) and get a nostalgic smile
on my face.
As I already said, this feeling doesn't have any real connection to the song meaning itself, but the lyrics here
just do the above to me:

"So I see it's me, I can do anything
And I'm still the child
...
There is no Childhood's End"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzPAGhGPw34

again Marillion, this time with a certain part of "Blind Curve". This part strangely combines a certain atmosphere
of despair and submitting to what#s happening around with a sort of uprising music alltogether turning it into
a kind of "Fuck all" feeling. I'm lacking the english words to describe it properly but this part
always gets me and makes me *pathetic* scream out...

"I see priests, politicians?
The heroes in black plastic body-bags under nations' flags
I see children pleading with outstretched hands,
drenched in napalm, this is no vietnam

I can't take any more, should we say goodbye
How can we justify?
They call us civilised!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPp5eAWlOdw (part is at 08:23)

sorry for the muddy youtube songs. The album versions either aren't online or just "not available in my country"

Yeah, Nagelfar is a good one. I'm a fan of music that I think is beautiful/tragic. Pure hate tends to just billow and gets me nowhere.

My personal favorites are Alcest, Agalloch, Emperor, Cormorant, Warwulf, Dissection, Empyrean Sky, Mysteriarch, and Sculptured.

If you love dogs/wolves this ones a bit of a tearjerker.

Quote:
The walls around me, eyes surround me, feed my fear again.
I must be freed or I will die before the harvest moon, my friend.
I do not have another year in me, you've gotta set me free.

The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the tree.
All I want is to be untamed and free, howl and (dream).

Damn.

Insomnium - Weighed Down with Sorrow. That entire song is just a load of melancholy and despair. Also most of The Foreshadowing has a lot of heartfelt songwriting, if a bit repetitive

I'm not really patriotic but Remembrance Day by Demon really touched me when I first heard it especially because my grandfather was in World War II and fighting to make this a better country for many generations to come, you were a very brave man and will be remembered for what you have done for us.

RIP Pa.

Amon Amarth - Embrace the Endless Ocean really does it for me, with the way it builds up this feeling of freedom, hope and longing, and then just takes it away and ends in tragedy and sorrow.

Also Nile - Wrought, though not in a way directly related to the lyrics. It's hard to describe the feeling I get from it, but it's like the verse riff (amazingly beautiful in its own right) is there as a build-up to prepare you for the solo, which is the climax of the song and the most beautiful thing ever once the build-up has put you in the right state of mind. The solo leaves you in a hazey, drugged-out, euphoric state which lasts for the rest of the song. It's probably a highly personal thing, though.

I'm not sure if this is the kind of emotion the OP was referring to, but Aeon - God Gives Head in Heaven has just the right mix of hilariety and testosteronic aggression. I'll be mouthing along forcefully to the lyrics during the part where he goes "forced to fuck your god" because it's incredibly heavy and delivered with utter conviction, and then I'll realize just how ridiculous the lyrics I'm mouthing are and laugh out loud.

Angantyr's "Blod for Blod, Liv for Liv" gives me a very strong emotional reaction, it feels sad and bleak and yet sort of sublime at the same time, it's like a euphoria via depression type thing...I don't know. Just makes me feel so at peace.

Also, anything by Dream Theater makes me very, very angry.

I first heard this track immediately prior and during a breakup with my first girlfriend. It always stirs a really nostalgic, bitter-sweet emotion. Something about that big portamento aciddy riff and wistful melody...

Great tune to me...:)

Judas Priest - Here Comes the Tears

Been hearing this song for close to 7 years and it still never ceases to leave chills. And following the years after my break-up, and trying to find someone else...this song was like an emotional dagger to me. I put this song along with Sabbath's Solitude and Opeth's To Bid You Farewell on the same level. But after unsuccesfully finding anyone, I decided to give up on it n concentrate on more important things in life. And even though I'm happily free of the emotional chains, this song (and the other 2) still slay.

"Won't somebody love me?" ...generic line it may seem, but give it to the vocal genius of Halford and there you go.

Virgin Black's Lacrimosa was the first song I ever heard that made my eyes well up, even if only for a moment.

I love Agalloch's Marrow of the Spirit album, but I regularly skip over To Drown because it's just too damn depressing.

Rotting Christ tracks like Gaia Tellus, Aeon Aenos and Demonon Vrosis make me feel about 10 feet tall.

Judas Priest's Victim of Changes makes me want to shake Rob Halford's hand and say, "Dude. You are the fuckin' man."

The most emotional song for me is one I wrote for my fallen son Ren, which I'll record this weekend. Besides that, these ones are really touching for the same reasons:

Sepultura - Grief always gives me kind of a sad feeling, it's a pretty powerful song...
Celtic Frost - Obscured is one heck of a song, gives me a pretty uncomfortable feeling...
Guns 'n Roses - November Rain pure masterpiece...

Solitude Aeturnus - Shattered My Spirit
I thought this was a cool tune, but when it was time to say goodbye to one of my dogs last month, I listened to this tune and now it makes me remember her. The initial grief has fortunately passed, but I think this song will always carry this association now.

Sieges Even - An Act of Acquiescence
This song really stuck out to me on this album, and I really enjoy the clean guitar intro. To relate back to my dog again, this was the last album I listened to while she was still alive, so this song will remind me of those less happy times (at least for the time being) but will also kind of just remind me of December in general, which I don't mind.

Pentagram - Burning Saviour
LOVE the guitar intro in this - it always reminds me of the cool times I was having back in very early 2012, when I first listened to the song. It also reminds me of specific weather, which is weird. I'd say this is my favorite Pentagram song.

Symphony X - Candlelight Fantasia
This one always reminds me of winter in general. It was late December 2009 when I first listened to it, so that's probably why. I always think of the white-tinted clouds, snow, and things of that nature, and because of the name I always think of a candle burning in my room. It also takes me back to the great times I had with friends in late 2009 into early 2010 before some crap drama happened.

Devastation - Deliver the Suffering
Absolutely bludgeoning song. Whenever I hear this, especially when the fast part kicks in, it makes me just want to wreck everything. The monstrous sound and just the intensity is always an awesome thing to hear.

Deathrow - Life Beyond
Another case of the intro being especially striking to me. I mentioned drama in the description for the Symphony X song, and first listened to bits of this song around the time that drama was getting ready to happen and finally did happen. Now whenever I hear this song (mostly because of the intro), I think of the drama and the winds of change the followed afterwards. Not necessarily negative, thought I do wish the drama didn't happen, but just another chapter that came and went.

Tarot - Shadow in My Heart
The part at 3:12 mesmerized me the first time, and gives me more thoughts and feelings about winter, specifically winter nights. For a song that's supposed to be sad and whatnot, it always makes me feel happy in the things I think about.

That's all for now. I could probably throw on a few more, but these are the ones that stood out to me.

Propagandhi - Without Love.
I've gone through my share of mental existential brouhaha, and this song always sent a chill up my spine during those times. It's not a particularly sad song, musically, but the lyrics pretty much sum up the tragedies of life in a down to earth and poetic way. Very modern, but not in a pretentious deafheaven kind of way. Then again, so many of the lyrics from that album make me sad in a tragedy of the everyman kind of way.

Huh, I thought I had already responded in this thread...

Without a doubt, I have to say Giles Corey. In particular, the Hinterkaifek EP. Only music I've legit cried to without already being strongly emotional. I can't listen to it too often, it affects me that much. Especially the last track.

Way Out of Here by Porcupine Tree is pretty touching. I had a lot of personal issues during my adolescence and teenage years and that song kind of takes me back. That and Sentimental from the same album.

Okay, it's all metal for me, but mostly ballads.

Deep Purple - Child in Time
Tarot - Guardian Angel
Rainbow - Rainbow Eyes
Scorpions - We'll Burn the Sky
Manowar - Heart of Steel
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods (and many more...)

There's so much emotion in those songs. I get shivers every time I listen to them.

I can think of two songs that aren't metal. First, The Cure's Lovesong. It's the most straightforward song on that album, but I like it. Second is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez OR Judas Priest.

I also forgot Weighed Down with Sorrow by Insomnium. That almost yanked a tear out of me the first time I heard that song.

"Time" - Pink Floyd
Reminds me of how unaccomplished I feel. But it also makes me think about how I should be spending my time, my priorities in life...
"Bridge to Nowhere" - Sam Roberts
^Basically same as the above song. I'm off to a depressing start.
"Sleeping Sun" - Nightwish
One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

And because of my ethnicity, I was exposed to a lot of orchestral popular Arabic music. Some of it is still the best music I've ever heard and it makes me feel at least a little bit of pride in my culture in a world that thinks we're all "carpet riders." Like Om Kolthoom (or the many other spellings of her name) and her orchestra. That's from several decades ago... She died in 1976 and when she was alive, could sing for hours without her voice wearing down very much. Anyone into foreign language music should go through her catalogue like mad. :)

Lord Huron's music creates an amazing sense of adventure and huge, majestic sweeping landscapes.

Since this thread isn't specific to Metal or anything, I'll mention music found in video games here. All of these songs bring back a strong sense of nostalgia, among other things.

I'll start with the Elder Scrolls series.

I didn't have the pleasure of playing Arena or Daggerfall as a child, but when I did eventually get to them I instantly fell in love with them as if they were not dated at all, Daggerfall in particular. While the game isn't perfect by any means, and can be pretty frustrating actually, I still had heaps of fun trying to make a character that wouldn't die in 2 seconds. But seriously, I highly enjoyed this game, and the music still brings my mind back to my adventures in the lands of Tamriel through Daggerfall.

Daggerfall "Over Snow"
Daggerfall "Sunny Day"
Daggerfall "Explore 4"
Daggerfall "Square"

I started the franchise with Oblivion, and yet the music of Morrowind brings back more intense feelings of nostalgia. I don't understand why, especially since Morrowind is not even my favorite game among the others. Not yet, at least. Despite playing this game off and on for awhile, I keep feeling myself right at the edge of considering this game my favorite, but I can't quite make that leap just yet. Either way, the game IS a good one, and I have had a lot of enjoyment from the lore and lands discovered in Morrowind. In retrospect, a big part of the music's impact on me is perhaps more due to the fact that I had these songs playing via my phone during walks in nature during my stay near Oregon, and when I lived in the Grand Canyon seasonally. This franchise has such perfect nature-walk music.

Morrowind "Nerevar Rising" + Morrowind "Nerevar Rising (Reprise)"
Morrowind "Peaceful Waters"
Morrowind "The Road Most Traveled"
Morrowind "The Prophecy Fulfilled"

As I mentioned before, Oblivion was my entry into the Elder Scrolls. The music in this game can be so very serene and gentle, and, again, perfect for nature-walks, and for relaxing in general. That being said, the music here does not make me feel a strong emotion outside of nostalgia in the same way that these other songs do, but I have been able to be immersed within my surroundings a lot more quickly with them at the same time, and they are also great during creative moments (writing, in particular).

Oblivion "Harvest Dawn"
Oblivion "King and Country"
Oblivion "All's Well"
Oblivion "Dusk at the Market"

The music in Skyrim has had a much more varied emotional impact on me than the other games. Because of this, I consider the music in Skyrim to be my favorite. Within the franchise, Skyrim also has music that is the easiest to be disassociated with the game, and fit whatever context one finds themselves relating to while listening. Anyway, links.

Skyrim "Awake"
Skyrim "The Streets of Whiterun"
Skyrim "Sovngarde"
Skyrim "Atmosphere"

I'll be brief on the one's that jerk my emotions hard. I'll have them grouped based on similarities.

Clare's Dragoons

The Freedom Fighter-Joe McCann

Airdí Cuain

This group has a lot of meaning considering half of my family from Ireland and many remember the Troubles really well and the struggle in the North. The last one my mum would either listen to it or hum it often when I was a little kid; I speak a little bit of Irish and understand a bit of what the song is saying.

Heathers - Margie

Not in Love - Crystal Castles ft. Robert Smith

High Noon in Killville - Angry Johnny & the Killbillies
