Goddamn, this is nearly exactly the type of death n roll I've been looking for these past few weeks, matches 9/10 of my criteria. Catchy, simple, riffs, nice leads, and a strong rock n roll vibe.

The only problem I have is the vocals don't sound as "powerful" as they could, though I think this is more due to mixing rather than the vocalist
himself.

Any more bands exactly like this one?

Hmm, alright, if that wet your whistle maybe you'd dig Skeletal Spectre:

Or Ghoul Patrol:

Ok here's a specific request. I am looking for "winter" sounding death metal. Stuff that makes you think of snow, blizzard, long walks during the cold nights of winter, vast desolate landscape covered in ice... Bonus point for catchy stuff.

Stuff I DO NOT want : Melo-death, folk-y stuff, tech-death, mechanical/sterile modern sounding bands, symphonic death metal.

So yeah, shoot what you've got!

Requests are getting weirder by the day!

I don't know man, it's another one of those cases where such a thing probably doesn't exist. And if it does then it's so small that it wasn't allowed any qualitative growth whatsoever.

Aye I know. I fear the only stuff that would fit the atmosphere I'm looking for would fall in the melo-death genre, sadly.

Even there only "wintry" stuff I can think of is probably Wintersun's debut. And that doesn't even cut it in my opinion, he. I don't know man, I think that I should've hit some band doing it by now if such a thing existed. Death metal tends to be "warmer" even if it's cold, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Uhh...if death/black is ok, Algol might fit the bill:

Death/Black is ok indeed. I am listening to that Algol track right now and I guess it could fit the bill. But what matters is that thanks to you, it seems I just discovered a great band!

Cool. The vocalist was also in Fester, who might also fit the bill:

Don't Aevangelist have some of a cold winter vibe?
At least I thought about it when I listened to it... (I guess it's those distant keyboards though)

Fester sounds fucking great too! Thanks for another great discovery! Heh, on their profile page they even have "winter" as lyrical theme. Not to mention an album named Winter of Sin!

Karlabos : I already know and love ÆVANGELIST, but they do not fit the mood I'm looking for. For me, their music evokes stuff like dark, damp, oppressive, claustrophobic basements and rusty stuff :p

Are there any DM bands that make a habit of using echoed, atmospheric-based clean singing passages? Basically like Fear Factory's "Scapegoat", I guess. It's okay if the actual music is kind of groove metal-influenced, or if it doesn't have any industrial influence like FF do; I'm mostly just looking for singing vocals in DM bands that aren't melodeath.

I'm in another rut. Has anyone heard any good OSDM lately? I like the low growls/gutterals (not burps/squeals), fuzzy guitar tones, aggressive drums that are mid to fast pace, with plenty of blasts. Some of the bands that I've been into lately are Blaspherian, Carnal Ghoul, Funebrarum, Disma, Incantation, Cryptborn, Coffins, Lawless, Maveth, שְׁאוֹל (Sheol), Witchrist, Muknal, Vasaeleth, Wormridden, Voids of Vomit, and Stench of Decay. I know some of those bands are not really OSDM, but that's the sound I'm into right now.

MC, a long shot but maybe some Disbelief could fit what you're looking for. The clean vocals aren't echoed though and they start at 2:47. Their other songs also follow a similar format of mixing up harsh swedeath-ish vocals + clean ones. Listen to the whole song.

That is a very strange request indeed, but an interesting one also. I really can't think of anything with your restrictions, I know there are LOTS of symphonic death metal bands that have a nice winter sound (Eternal Tears of Sorrow, and Wintersun)...but a winter themed standard death metal? No. The only thing I can think of is a band named Winter.

You could try digging through this archive. I searched for death metal bands with lyrical themes of "Winter" and excluded the terms melodic and symphonic.

http://www.metal-archives.com/search/ad ... ame=#bands

================================================================================================

If you decide to shed your "no symphonic" restriction, Eternal Tears of Sorrow is pretty much as winter as it gets.

Gimme a while to dig through my mind and see what I can remember, but in the meantime this Obliteration song has some cool echoey clean vocals in the middle:

Edit: not really echoey, but the only other think I can really think of right now are Dark Millennium (might be too death/doomy):

...Erm? :???: That Obliteration song, while awesome, didn't have any clean vocals. And you didn't link a Dark Millennium song?

Listening to other people's recs in just a minute.

EDIT: Disbelief are good - that style of vocals is fine for what I'm looking for. I'll check out more of their stuff soon, thanks!

You can make exclusions in the advanced search? Damnit... what else have I been missing?!

Regarding Winter, in my opinion they sound very far from wintry. And coincidently they're the only band on that list above that I know about. Can't say I have any idea of how the other 22 bands sound like or else I'd give some guidance there.

Nice! How do you make exclusions in the advanced search?

I think it would be cool if you had the ability to search for instruments as well on the archives.

Apparently you just have to place "-keyword" and it acts as an exclusion.

Wow, holy shit. Yesterday was a long day. The Obliteration track does have clean vocals, they're just closer to the end than the middle. They come in around 7:25.

Here's the Dark Millennium song I meant to link:

So, I've finally decided to try to find my way into death metal, bit by bit. I'm looking for some bandsl that have black metal instrumentals, but a death metal singer. I'd also prefer if it was closer to brutal death metal vocals(a la old Dominus)
Spoiler: show

The instruments can be raw or refined, and slow/evil-sounding parts are welcome. Thanks!

So like... Black metal with death metal growls? Blood of Kingu and Hate Forest come in mind.
Also this release by the death metal band Mortification has pretty evil sound, and a bit of bm influence in the instrumental.

Saturnian Mist are a black metal band with an angry gorilla on vocals:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdiwkHRsRjc

For something really groovy but with an evil, vaguely black-metallish atmosphere and super low vocals, maybe try Slugathor?

Aside from the more obvious suggestions like Behemoth or Belphegor, maybe give Myrkskog a go. Their Superior Massacre lp was a pretty decent mix of semi-brutal/tech death and black metal with some suprisingly low guttural vocals if memory serves.

Also, Astrofaes has as death metal-like vocalist similar to Blood of Kingu and Hate Forest.

I'm not very good at hitting the nail on the head, but try some of these bands:
Muknal
Heresiarch
Crucifier
Set
Witchrist
Gave Desecrator
Sadomator

Or also try looking into Encoffination. No blackened riffs, but it does have super deep vocals and a really dark atmosphere. The only downside is that the vocals are a bit hard to hear, as with most bands with deep vocals.

Not sure if this fits your criteria exactly but check out Bolzer. They are a young Swiss band with 6 reviews and an average of 90% on their EP from this year currently so it has gotten some great reception. The music is occult black/death metal. The vocals mostly resemble cavernous death growls and the riffs are somewhere between black and death metal, and the whole atmosphere is very dark and occult sounding.

Here is the link to their EP in its entirety.

I echo Karlabos' rec of Hate Forest. I was searching for a band with the same criteria a few months back and Hate Forest fit the bill perfectly.

Also, I thought I'd post this here, as well: I'm looking to find some war metal, a la Blasphemy, Revenge, Diocletian, etc. that has low, growling vocals and death metal-ish guitar solos. Lyrical motifs about war are preferred. Impiety was recommended, and I like them, but I'm looking for something that combines the unrefined, chaotic nature of their old albums with the guttural vocals of their recent work.
