I listened to (2007) Gris - Il Etait Une Foret yesterday and (2013) Gris - À l'Âme Enflammée, l'Äme Constellée today.
Amazing band, atmosphere and vocals! REALLY emotional!

I am mildly familiar with Sol Invictus although not overly so just due to the breadth of the catalog; kind of like Current 93, they/he have a ton of different albums and eras and I am not quite sure where to start or where to go to. Well, heh, I can't especially get into the Current 93 due to Tibet's vocals (they're just not to my personal liking) although they have some awesome compositions on that All The Pretty Little Horses album.




I am quickly becoming somewhat of a fanboy of Lustre. Most black metal artists that delve into the ambient genre do so on a separate basis and by this I mean that there are usually black metal tracks and then ambient tracks. Lustre, on the other hand, presents this perfect marriage between the two genres that happens simultaneously and I really think it's fascinating and wonderful - I highly recommend it!

Aye, Gris are awesome, I love both of their full-lengths (although I still need to check out the one that was released under a different name, kind of a proto-Gris). Have you heard Sombres Forêts? He is another fantastic French-Canadian black metal artist that really outdid himself on his latest release La Mort Du Soleil. He actually collaborated with the guys from Gris on a side-project called Miserere Luminis that is also quite excellent.

The fuck are you talking about, Requiem and debut were equal (96/100 for both) imo.

I love the slow tempo and the screams on this.

Black Uniforms - Splatter Punx on Acid

Very thrashy hardcore with some metal influence.

Pagan's Mind - Eyes of Fire

Album starts strong with two catchy tunes full of great hooks. Goes downhill after that, though. - sounds like these guys had many ideas but didn't know how to pull them off. Lots of variety but little musical value present here.

Empyrium - Into the Pantheon Blu-Ray in full.

It's incredible. Flawless. Excellent. My only grip is that the setlist could have been longer, including more songs from the first 2 albums. They play 'Der Weiher' which was a bonus track from the 'A Retrospective' compilation but left aside too many great songs. 'Ode To Melancholy' or 'The Ensemble of Silence' could have been better choices; just like the Weiland tracks where 'Fortgang' or 'Waldpoesie' could have been included instead 'Das Blau-kristallne Kämmerlein' or 'Heimwärts'.

Markus speaks like twice in all the concert, only said 'thanks' once and said 'Mourners'. The band just plays the tracks one after another, leaving room for only applauses and stuff. The show provides a very intimate atmosphere. The band has a very serious expession; Markus especially seems to be very concentrated/focused on the songs and members only, he barely looks at the audience at all.

To me, the S/T is raw, thrashing proto-black metal, while Requiem and Octagon are Pantera-tier groove/thrash. Meh.

Thresholds pales in comparison to The Key.

NP: Merkstave - s/t This is good. Lacks the cryptic vibe of the demo, but then also lacks the bad and very much too long guitar solo segment toward the end of "Lament for Lost Gods" on that previous release. Builds to something richer in the last third. Good stuff, but not quite great. Something seems to hold it back from the upper tiers of awesome.

Brass Bed by Widowspeak. Meh folk music. Passes the time pleasantly, but almost nothing memorable.

Yeah that one kicks ass. Summoning is a band I really have to be in the mood for to enjoy anymore sadly. But this has inspired me to listen to my favorite from them:

One of the finest solos I've ever heard in extreme metal.

Woods of Desolation - This Autumn Light

Really great song so far. Sounds like this new album will be as emotional and grandiose as Torn Beyond Reason. D's vocals are different and a bit more "black metal" than Tim's howls, which I have yet to make up my mind about. Regardless the music is stellar.

Came across this band back several years ago when MySpace was still popular. I have this EP and an earlier album from them, but haven't followed them. I guess I need to go digging and find out if they're still making more music because they have a pretty solid blackened death sound going on.

Bonesaw - Riot in the House of Worship

Catchy, crunchy D-beat peddling filthiness easily on a par with any of the old-school-death-metal-revival bands out there today. Thoroughly recommended.

The whole "depressive black metal" thing is pretty hit or miss with me although this is one of the hits - I love the excessive use of the piano and the overall mood of the album which is, in some way, indeed romantic (as in romanticized).

Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off, Baby

Haven't really listened to this one a whole lot. I think I'm ready now.

Rush - La Villa Strangiato

Hemispheres is a hell of an album. These classic Rush albums are all impeccably constructed.

Metallica- St. Anger

Curse is good, but the debut album was muuuuuuch batter, with more keys, a more atmospheric touch and more original.

Arsaidh is awesome and the digipack is very nice tough it has no booklet.
