NOT Austin..... nothing but emos and hipsters. I swear, my band played at the red7 in Austin and the only crowd there were a bunch of (I guess) guys on their iphones and the little flippy hair do, one of them sulking on a barcounter in the far corner of the venue, it was terrible. Never again. I hear Dallas is pretty good though, theres a few death metal bands there and they even get some radio airtime on Saturdays. San Antonio is pretty good too, especially the white rabbit. you gotta weed out the bands you like there but when you find them their pretty consistent with their venues.

See Averse Sefira for good bands from Austin

Rubella Muti (Voivod-y prog/thrash) is one of my favorite newer bands and they're also local to Austin. No idea what kind of crowds they get, though.

Houston has a pretty awesome power-violence and hardcore scene, not so much with metal in my experience though. El Paso has a few gems but that city is aabsolutey terrible to stay in for anything but a short visit.

Houston and Dallas. There's really no competition. I'd vouch for Houston as #1. By virtue of being cities that have culture and large populations.

There's a band here and there otherwise, but you're chasing jackalopes looking for a good scene in one of the smaller cities. El Paso, Lubbock, Corpus Christi...

well but doesn't Austin hold some big music festival every year? I've never been there but I understand that the place is flooded by a bunch of bands trying to be the next Arctic Monkeys or Death Cab for Cutie, along with a bunch of thick rimmed glasses wearing sideways haircut dudes trying to be the first ones to "discover" the next Arctic Monkeys or Death Cab For Cutie. Now I'm not trying to bash that scene or that type of music, but it is what that festival attracts; and I would assume that it is somewhat at odds with the metal scene. Austin is supposably one of the nicer parts of Texas as far a livability goes though- it's a big college town, and les "rednecky" if you will, than other parts of the state.

Yeah you are probably right. I forgot about that festival. That is also a film festival and probably attracts a much larger audience than the other one.

I was referring to the SXSW music fest in Austin. That festival probably has probably had the effect of turning the city music scene into hipster nerd central. But that place can't be all bad, metal wise; The Sword is from there. So there is at least one good band from Austin...
