The MDF website says Ulver's performance will be based off of their previous shows, so no BM songs.

Ulver doesn't even have the personnel to play their early works.

Haven't they played the first track off Bergtatt as a live encore a few times over the past couple years?

Relating to the thread, this may be the first Maryland Deathfest I attend; Ulver and Candlemass are enough to seal the deal for me.

I think I'm gonna try and go this year after my plans to go fell through last year. Definitely interested in seeing Ulver and Candlemass as others have said.

6 more bands have been confirmed for MDF XII!

MY DYING BRIDE (UK) - Exclusive US appearance and first US show since 1997

THE CHURCH OF PUNGENT STENCH (Austria) - Exclusive US appearance. Playing an old school setlist of material from their first EP and first 3 albums.

HOODED MENACE (Finland)

ULCERATE (New Zealand)

BÖLZER (Switzerland) - Exclusive US appearance

WINDHAND

Nothing blowing me away too much with this newest announcement, but I was already sold with Ulver/Asphyx/Nocturnus.

Haven't really heard that much about Windhand or Bolzer, and I never really gave Ulcerate the time of day... might be a good time to check them all out. Honestly though, even though I'm not huge into grind or hardcore, I wouldn't mind seeing a few more bands that fit that mould get added to the bill in the next few announcements. Soundstage had some of the best performances last year.

I've seen Hooded Menace before and they were cool. Pretty stoked for MDB and especially Pungent Stench. Bolzer might be cool, too.

Pungent Stench might make me go to this. Especially if they are playing all older stuff.

Highly excited for this. Especially now that they've added My Dying Bride. As if adding At the Gates wasn't enough to get the panties wet, hahaha.

Still kinda jokingly/secretly hoping for a Therion/Amorphis announcement, but that's just wishful thinking.

They got the grind on lock this year. Unholy Grave, In Disgust, Archagathus, Excruciating Terror, Sick/Tired, Mesrine, Hemdale, Shitstorm, etc. So many good grind bands!

Why anyone wouldn't go to this is beyond me. So many incredible bands in one place. All those complaining about this band or that band or whatever... I don't get you. Even if there are only three or four bands you REALLY want to see, it's just awesome to go and hang out.

A friend of mine's going pretty much solely for Ulver. I'm gonna try and get the money together for all four days.

From Facebook:

"Well, apparently Cryptic Slaughter will no longer be playing at MDF XII. We're a bit surprised, seeing how we just found out about it via a Facebook post rather than an e-mail that would've made us aware of a problem that would prevent them from playing just 3 days after it was announced. Sorry to report that one.
Stay tuned for more band confirmations + ticket info."

Never listened to them but I know some people were looking forward to their appearance. At least there's ample time for a good replacement.

Do MDF tickets sell out quickly? This is the first time I'll be buying one. I plan to snag one as soon as they go on sale, but I'm going with a friend who may not be able to afford a four-day ticket yet. I trust that there were a good amount left after the first few months of previous years?

Well there's limited Thursday tickets because Thursday is only the indoor venue, so Thursday/four-day passes can go quick, depending on who's playing Thursday. This past year they had Bolt Thrower playing on Thursday so naturally the tickets for that sold out *very* quickly (as in, in a day or two). I don't believe 3-day passes typically ever sell out, and if the venue capacity is significantly higher this year than it was in the Sonar days (as they claim) I think there should be even more 3-day passes available.

Festival organizers just announced that there is going to be a pre-fest show on Wednesday, and they're going to have local bands playing at the Sidebar all weekend. More bands! When do they announce who is headlining, better known as being cut off in the middle of their short sets?

List of things MDF needs before more bands:
-better scheduling (like short headliner sets that don't get cut off at curfew, some leeway for the inevitable problems)
-competent gate security (see: 2013)
-working amps (see: every goddamn year)
-someone who can identify and swap out a broken amp (see: Autopsy, 2012)
-communication with attendees about scheduling changes (install the Twitter app)
-soundboard operators who notice when one guitar is completely silent (see: Vinterland, 2013)

The strength of the festival is that they book a lot of good bands, including one-off/exclusive shows. Having great bands there doesn't matter if people can't get into the damn festival, the bands get cut off because of shitty scheduling, the bands amps are blown or the sound tech is awful. More bands means more overlap in sets, more logistical issues for bands, and more logistical issues for fans. Adding more bands doesn't help the problems the festival had last year, it compounds them. Instead of flying yet another band over from Europe, why not bring in someone who knows how to run a goddamn festival so the excuse for every fuckup isn't "we're only two guys running the whole thing"?

There are a lot of bands I want to see, but it looks like they're adding more fuel to the fire of all the problems they've had. What's the chance that I catch a short Bolt Thrower set that gets cut off, an even shorter Venom set, or a lead-guitarless Vinterland?

I'm gonna be in the minority here, but I was so happy that Bolt Thrower had a shortened set. Mainly because of that tent. It was so hot, sticky, muggy, just all around disgusting, I was surprised that I even lasted as long as I did there.

That tent was the worst idea ever.

I was pretty mad that Destroyer 666 got cut off early in 2009 because Bolt Thrower were playing inside. I would have been even more mad had I gone last year when Venom got cut off.

They simply need less bands and more people to run the fest. I understand the appeal of this fest is the inclusion of all these one-off European bands but they need better organization over yet another third rate, obscure cult band.

Hey now! Those third rate, obscure cult bands keep the internet fans happy. To take them off would throw everything out of alignment.

Seriously though, it seems like they've at least listened to the concerns from last year's fest, mainly the horrible gate security and the venue size, and they've already rectified the latter by changing venues. The other things on Zodi's list I'm hoping they've at least considered making better for next year, and I hope they do take effort to make next year worth it. People can only put up with certain things for so long before they just stop going, and Ryan and Evan couldn't be so ignorant to the complaints of the fest's fans so as to not start fixing shit.

They do need a professional event planner, though, as the poor scheduling of bands is inexcusable for a big metal festival like what MDF is becoming/has kind of become.

I think they will really learn from last year, from post-fest comments I believe they actually learned how out of control the fest was going. And im sure they know about the tech problems and address them, although MDF doesn't have a great track record with that. I still enjoyed last year quite a bit and plan on going back this year, what a killer line up. I am glad that they are booking more death/black/thrash,etc and less doom, it seemed to turn into Maryland doomfest some years. Other than that looking forward to another great weekend in May, I believe tickets go on sale on the 23rd and make sure to book your hotel early.

The Facebook page just posted that they're announcing even more fucking bands on Friday. They do not need anymore bands. There's already sixty three bands on this festival. This is complete and utter overkill.

Dude, they said that they'd have over 100 bands like, a while ago. Most of the bands announced Friday will be hardcore/grind stuff for the Soundstage venue, which you don't even have to buy tickets for or go to if you don't want. They said for people who only care about the metal stuff, the only overlap is going to be the last outdoor band of each day slightly overlapping with the first indoor metal band of each day.

I didn't know about them announcing that, but it still just seems like way too much for one fest, even if a large part of that will be 30 second song hardcore bands.

It's four days long, plus a pre-fest show on Wednesday, and it's at three venues plus local bands at smaller venues throughout the weekend. Unless a band has extremely short songs or something, most bands at MDF get like 45 minute sets, with headliners getting more like an hour to an hour and a half. I dunno, I've never really had any problems with the running order or anything at all my years going until last year, and the guys put on a damn good festival so when they've put so much work into changing the festival format to something that sounds a lot more fluid and easy to participate in, I have no reason at all to doubt them.

I'm a bit surprised by the prices. The 4-day tickets are $255 this year, which is a $75 increase from last year if I got last's year price right ($180?). Seeing as how they're changing venues and last year was reportedly rough, that's a bit of a gamble. Still pretty damn good for 60+ bands, but having never been to a festival of this size I'm not sure how many I'll actually see. I'll probably bypass the grind/hardcore bands entirely, too, so I don't need a ticket to the Soundstage. Might end up getting a 4-day ticket anyway because that'll be the cheapest way to get into Ram's Head for four days plus the main venue. Guess we'll see tomorrow when they announce the rest of the main stage bands and who's playing on Thursday. I just hope it isn't My Dying Bride (then I'll have to go Thursday)!

Wow, holy shit, ticket prices have gone WAY up. I didn't buy any Soundstage tickets/passes last year, but I think I paid around $180 for 4-day tickets to all of the main venue stuff. This year a 3-day pass to both the outdoor stages and the indoor night-time stage will run me $220, plus more if the Thursday bands are good...

How much do you wanna bet they'll stick a ton of the good bands on Thursday just so more people will buy four day passes?

Thursday is Ram's Head only, which has a smaller capacity than the outdoor areas and is pretty much guaranteed to sell out no matter what.

Edit: that actually brings up an interesting point. At previous years' fests, Thursday tickets/4 day passes were always really limited in number because they couldn't sell more tickets than the capacity of the indoor venue. However, for Friday/Saturday/Sunday, they'd obviously sell way more 3-day passes and whatnot because the outdoor areas had a massive capacity. It usually didn't become a crowding issue inside Sonar because lots of times people would leave after the big headlining outdoor bands or generally just mull around outside drinking and chatting instead of watching the late-night indoor bands, but still technically there would probably be way more people inside the festival grounds than Sonar has the capacity for. However, now that the outdoor area and indoor area are at two distinct venues with two distinct ticketing systems, I wonder if 3-day passes (and Ram's Head tickets in general) will be much more limited than the 3-day/Friday/Saturday/Sunday tickets of yore.

They just added Dark Angel, Triptykon, and INQUISITION!

I think the "I's" rule this year . Immolation , Incantation, and Inquisition.

Well it looks like all 3-day passes are for only one venue so I think they've bypassed that problem. They'll have more tickets for the Edison lot than the Ram's Head or Soundstage.

Thursday bands have been announced and I'm unimpressed. I like Coffins and Triptykon but altogether I don't think the lineup is worth going a day early. And I guess a lot of people will be gushing over Dark Angel being there. Personally I'm psyched about Inquisition! I just got into them recently.

I'll probably be buying 3-day passes for Edison and Ram's Head tomorrow. Soundstage has a couple bands I recognize but I don't like grind and hardcore enough to warrant going, unless I really wanted to cram in seeing as many bands as possible. I should be fine with the other two venues. Ram's Head has a very limited amount of bands playing, but they're essential. Asphyx, Bolzer, Enthroned, Hooded Menace, Immolation, Incantation, Mitochondrion, Ulcerate... that's a major part of the fest for me right there. And supposedly there's a couple more smaller bands for Edison tba in December? Cool! Really looking forward to this.

Edit:

If only Immortal were playing!

Yeah, the Soundstage lineup isn't really blowing my mind or anything (would've liked to see Black Breath again though...) so I'll probably just stick to the parking lot and Ram's Head. I dunno about Thursday though....of the bands playing I mainly care about Coffins and Torche, both of whom I've already seen. Triptykon....ehhhh. On the fence about them.

Reminder that tomorrow at 3:00 PM EST the multiday tickets are going on sale, no idea what kind of limitations there are going to be but I missed my chance to get an all day pass last year. Yet still bought a thursday ticket when I arrived.

Might end up getting a 4-day ticket anyway because that'll be the cheapest way to get into Ram's Head for four days plus the main venue.

This is probably the way to go to save money on tickets. Since the Thursday tickets will be at least $30, you might as well get the soundstage as well for $255. The lineup is killer regardless of what day you go it looks like, most excited for; Bolzer, Candlemass, Dark Angel, Diocletain, God Macabre, Incantation, Inquisition, MGLA, Necros Christos, Orator, Witchchrist, Wrathprayer. And that list is extremely condensed theres tons of crushing bands this year, much less doom although excited for some quality sludge as well as Uncle Acid.

And... Ulver just for the one time experience, could care less about their career now unless they release another perdition city. Hopefully they surprise us with an old school set list, extremely doubtful of course.

Still got my fingers crossed for King Diamond, allways will.

Couldn't have gotten a 4-day if I wanted to, those suckers sold out fast! I bought 3-day passes for Edison and Ram's Head. The wait begins!
