Bruce Dickinson - King in Crimson, off The Chemical Wedding

Honestly wondering why I don't listen to Bruce's solo stuff more often. I know it, and really like it, but I rarely spin it.

I just bought that album and have been listening to it and Accident of Birth for the last few days, what a coincidence.

Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue while driving home from work, good, mellow song - one of their best ballads.

I've heard all of these albums from years ago. They were some of the earlier metal albums I heard back in the day. Tyranny of Souls kicks some ass too, but I like the previous two a smidgen better. :p

Dagnabbit, guys. Bruce Dickinson - The Alchemist

The Chemical Wedding is an interesting album from a sonic perspective, because the guitars were outfitted with bass strings to achieve that sludgy, crushingly heavy sound. In terms of straightforward heavy metal, I prefer Accident Of Birth and Tyranny Of Souls, but Chemical Wedding as a whole is quite interesting. It's at once ethereal and yet monolithic.

Insatanity - Begotten, Not Made

Pretty solid, seemingly forgotten death metal from 1996. The vocals are often on the black side, but there are plenty of low gutterals, often done in 'harmony'. Slow, grinding riffs balance out the fast, blasty sections. Yep, pretty good overall. Nothing special, but certainly enjoyable.

Up to "Jerusalem" it's almost flawless for me, the last three tracks I like, but I wouldn't say are up to par with some of the other stuff on there.

Vader - "Out Of The Deep"

There's something about The Beast that sounds weird to me. It just sounds too clicky and clean, unlike other Vader albums. Eh, it could just be me. Still a damn fine album, nonetheless.

Getting a little aggravated by the budget elements in my final assignment....

I reckon this is their best album. It's wacky and a lot of fun.

Celtic Frost - Monotheist

This is still good, but I will always prefer Triptykon's Eparistera Daimones, as I think it's good better songs. However, I can't deny the greatness that is "Obscured" from this album - by a decent margin my favourite track here.

The Gathering - Red Is a Slow Colour

I've always shied away from this album because of its length, but I'm finally giving it a go now. Damn good ambient rock, as expected from this era of The Gathering.

Have you listened to Orange Goblin? Severely groovy stoner-ish doom-ish heavy metal. Really great stuff. If you're into slow-moving psych-laden stuff I'd recommend Acid King. Bongzilla if you don't mind a sludgy vocal. You also oughta check out Kyuss as they're the originators of heavy stoner rock. I also found Samsara Blues Experiment to be very similar to Sleep and Electric Wizard in their long psychedelic jams.

Huuuuuuge Kyuss fan, just started getting into Witch, I'll definitely check more into Bongzilla and Orange Goblin, though. I've heard snippets of songs, but never really sat down and gave either a good, thorough listen. That'll change later... as I have just re-upped the stash. I've really been wanting to hear more doomy black metal. Darkthrone's Goatlord had that vibe, but I haven't really found much black metal in that slower, sludgier vein.

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom

This has aged really well. A lot of bands make low growls sound funny or cute (even some of the classics), but here Blasphemy genuinely sound like bloodgargling cultists. The production is perfect. Almost every song, the chaos subsides and there's a big shameless rockin' bridge.

Inquisition - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult

Got this today thanks to dreadmeat. I'm not even half-way through it and the length being over an hour is a little daunting, but what I've heard so far has been quite good. I can already sense the production has been beefed up, as it sounds a little too much like their newer output, but the music is still what you'd expect from Inquisition. Not bad at all!

Old Man's Child- Felonies of the Christian Art

I don't know why I hadn't paid much attention to this band in the past because their 2nd and 5th albums are excellent.

Reverence - Chamber of Divine Elaboration

Slightly avant-garde, but not too much to be too wacky, this band seems to straddle the line between atmospheric black metal and going out into experimental territory, and doesn't seem to deviate from that line. I guess there are some comparisons to bands like Blut Aus Nord and, to a smaller scale, Deathspell Omega. Chamber of Divine Elaboration has enough going on to warrant repeated spins, though, and the melodies work well for them.

Country-folky stuff. Pretty good stuff if you're into that sort of thing. Varies from uplifting and downtrodden in feeling.

Santana - Caravanserai

Bought the vinyl on a whim because I liked the cover and it was dirt-cheap. Okay atmospheric jazzy stuff mixed in with samba-infused music.
