NP: Terrorizer - World Downfall

Just checking this out for the first time because it's high time I educated myself on grindcore. Not that I've ever been too enthused about the idea, but hey... This strikes me as a pretty great album for what it is. Still probably wouldn't spin it very often. Maybe it'll be a grower. Should check out Repulsion and early Napalm Death next.

Repulsion should be at the top of your list quite frankly. Early ND also rules super hard. Scum is my personal favorite but FETO is definitely a bit more accessible. There's a LOT of great grindcore out there if you get the itch to explore it.

Currently in my cubicle:

Regurgitate - Effortless Regurgitation of Bright Red Blood
http://regurgitate.bandcamp.com/album/e ... e-sessions

Still some of the best goregrind ever written

Sargiest - Sargeist

Finnish black metal perfection in my opinion. Some of the best melodies on the album are in this song.

Some pretty sweet black/thrash from Portugal.

Kamelot - When the Lights Are Down, off The Black Halo

The layers and layers of beauty this thing has are almost otherwordly. In fact, this album would be my favourite Kamelot release if not for those fucking interludes.

Nah, the interludes are fine; they add some breadth and space to the album. There are only like three of them, so it's not that big a deal for me. I respect you guys who don't like them (I know Ozzy doesn't either), but I dunno, just seems weird to complain about 3-4 minutes of music on an hour long album of fantastic material, is all. If it was some shit like Nightfall in Middle Earth, yeah I could see it, but I just don't think 3 little interludes is a big deal.

By far the best Kamelot album though, though Silverthorn and Epica come close.

Nah, 'Epica' easily surpasses 'The Black Halo'. Khan still had most of his range, and the songwriting was just masterful. Plus, it didn't have Shagrath ruining things. :grumble:

Scanner - Terrion

The Germans knew how to do some speed metal back in the 80s. I'm glad this album was finally rereleased.

Range is good, but it's not everything. TBH is just better all around to me.

Beyond Twilight - Hellfire

Checkin' out this band's whole discography. I already know their second album is good, this one sounds cool too so far. I also played some of the third one on break from work and it sounded fascinatingly good.

Agree with Emp regarding Khan's range. His high notes were cool, but they're not really what I like about him.

Twister Tower Dire - At Night, off Crest of the Martyrs

Just rocking, old school goodness going on here.

Yeah, if I had to choose, I'd pick "Moonlight" as my favorite Khan performance ever, though "Wander" off of Epica is about as good. He's always good.

Also man that TTD album rules. So fuckin good...Netherworlds is within a hair of being as good, by the way; check that out too.

Beyond Twilight - Godless and Wicked

My favourite Khan performance must be Lunar Sanctum. He just goes completely crazy there.

And yeah, Crest of the Martyrs is mighty cool. Haven't listened to Netherworlds, but hey, if what you say about it is true, then it must be fucking awesome. Will give it a listen later.

Never listened to them before, checked this out. The main melody and atmosphere of the track is pretty damn great.

I don't mind bombastic, but I've learned to appreciate subtlety when it comes to keys, a little can go a longer way if it is used sparingly for atmosphere instead of every track dripping in keyboards. I'm using "Epica" as a starting point, here goes..

Oh no, I'd rec you to start with The Fourth Legacy instead, man. Not that Epica isn't great, but TFL's easier to digest than their later works, while still being a terrific album from beginning to end. And the subtlety I talk about isn't only about the way they use keys; there are usually many different layers of music and different melodies going on at the same time in their compositions, but it requires further listens to actually notice any of it. It's awesome.

TFL's good tracks are good, but a lot of the second half is pretty unmemorable, "Lunar Sanctum" aside. Good starting point though, for "Nights of Arabia" and the title track at least. Those are awesome.

Beyond Twilight - The Devil's Hall of Fame

This is completely original...who says metal can't be unique anymore? I guess this is pretty old now. But it sounds so interesting - like slow, mournful dirges with melodic, epic vocals over top. It's really like nothing else, and not the more spastic prog of their second album either.

Nah, you just don't get it, man :-P

I haven't managed to get into Beyond Twilight. I feel like I should like them, as the individual elements present in their music are stuff I tend to find very appealing, but the actual ensemble does nothing for me. Weird.

@ Empyreal:
I got into that Beyond Twilight album when it first came out and it still holds up well today (my fave from them, and an all-time fave period). Oddly enough, I played that and the first Pagan's Mind (original version) back to back on a regular basis back then.

NP: Asra "Ahura Master -Marga-"
Vedic J-Rock? This is damn near metal actually, some songs are pretty much power metal.

Agree to disagree then. 'Epica' remains my favorite.

Franz Liszt - Nuages Gris

Got to take a break from metal every once in a while.

Edit: 'The Fourth Legacy' rules. This talk about the second half of the album being weak is rubbish. 'Until Kingdom Come' is one of the best songs Kamelot ever did.

Aura Noir - Son Of Hades

Aura Noir were better when they didn't make riffs that go down as smooth as lemonade.

Rotting Christ - Κατά τον δαίμονα του εαυτού

This still rules. Some great riffs spread throughout this catchy album, especially the first half. Rotting Christ doesn't disappoint, even 25 years on.

Fluisterwoud - Kerkganger

Spiky, spiny, rough and riffy black metal from The Netherlands, and it's bloody good too. The none-too-polished sound/production is perfect, yet still gives rancid life to every instrument. Damn good, dark stuff.

One of those bands I could listen to forever and not get tired of. Same can be said of most of Devin Townsend's solo stuff.

Distorted and downtuned death metal from Canada. Sounds like Portal (AUS). Heavy as fuck.
