Carcass - Symposium of Sickness

This is immaculately, insanely good. My favorite track off this one.

Ah, alcohol, solitude, and sweet sweet Esoteric... I could spend eternity under those conditions.

Karnivool - Asymmetry

Gorgeous prog rock, like Anathema and Katatonia combined with a dash of Cynic and Tool. Definitely one of my favorites this year.

How does this compare to past releases?

And I 3rd Esoteric and booze. Actually, I'm not a drug user at all, but I'm going to nominate Esoteric and mushrooms because it would probably be awesome.

Oaks of Bethel - The Spirit Molecule I

Perhaps one of the most accessible songs released by the band yet. If you could even call it that..... Deeply atmospheric, droning and hauntingly beautiful. I assume by the song title that the source of inspiration is DMT. Awesome to have black metal bands taking influence from psychedelics.

meandering and melancholic, this is such a great album to listen when playing Morrowind, by the way

Love this band's style of old-school doom. It's like being stabbed in the gut with EPIC RIFFS.

Ys II OVA - Endless History

Dunno where I found this song, but I'm glad I did because it's a great pop song.

Today's listens:

Chelsea Light Moving - s/t

Spoiler: show
The new project of Thurston Moore. I'm sure most of you are already aware of the band. This album is so good... Everything from the guitar tones to the drumming to the humorous, inane lyrics to the ridiculous signature Thurston-tunings and -chords. I didn't expect there to be an infusion of Black Metallish sounds in this record, but it doesn't really come as a surprise. The distorted guitar and bass tones are grating and really heavy. Definitely one of my favorite albums of 2013.

Slough Feg - Traveller

Spoiler: show
Of the three Slough Feg albums I've heard (Atavist, Traveller, Hardworlder) this one is my favorite. I realize that there's a lot of Slough Feg that I'm missing, but this is all I have for now. Part of what enthralls me about this album so much is the lyrics/story. The battle of the Vargr is a valiant one, and I find a lot of entertainment in following that journey. As far as musicianship goes, however, each member of the band really shines here. The vocals are spot on, even if Scalzi isn't too happy with them. He sings with such vibrato and might that it's hard to not be sucked into the story and the music. He is definitely my favorite "traditional" heavy metal singer. The drums and guitar lock in on this so tightly that its insane! The galloping rhythms and the syncopated hits are delivered with such precision and might. This is the album that I would recommend to any person who is interested in getting into Slough Feg.

Right now I am listening to the entirety of Warrior on the Edge pf Time by Hawkwind. This just might be my favorite album of all time. Fuckin' epic goodness. If you're a metalhead who loves vintage prog, you owe it to yourself to get this masterpiece.

Verdunkeln - Die Letze Legion

It's hard to say about music like this, which might grow on you, but I think this is really awful right now. I mean seriously?

eh, I can see they had ideas in mind - I just am not grabbed by this at all.

I remember that I was really liking this one when it came out. Strangely enough I didn't care much for Kelly's vocals on it. They were kind of misplaced, and too "heavy". And I am saying this as a huge Neurosis fan. Wish he had a different approach to the vocals on this one. Great record none the less. And they did record a follow up, it just haven't been released yet. Probably because of them being busy with the other bands touring/recording.

Ron Jarzombek and his brother are GODS and 'Ink Complete' is one of the greatest progressive metal albums of all time. 'Nuff said.

This is the album by Jarzombek, I think. Blotted Science and his solo stuff is good, sure, but Ink Complete is where it's at, and I can't imagine he'll ever top this album, although he's certainly giving it his all! It's not just the guitars, either - the bass and the drums more than fill the criteria of what he's trying to achieve.

For sure. Haven't listened to this one in a bit but it's certainly a nice album. The band is good live, too, if you ever get a chance to see them.

Septicflesh - Esoptron

First listen of this one, and I like it. I can't tell if I prefer this one or Mystic Places of Dawn just yet, but more listens of both will reveal that. For now, I am really digging Septicflesh's early output, since for the longest time I've been listening to their later stuff like Communion.

Just now finishing up a listen to Helstar's Nosferatu. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiifffffffffffffffffffs!

One of the few good Funeral Doom bands- but they aren't really comparable to Catacombs, Thergothon, or Mournful Congregation. Really creepy, slow Industrial sounding bits add a nice touch as well.

Tukaaria - "Memories of an Extinct Race"

I only recently discovered this band, but now the face I make whenever listening to them is basically "(づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ". Basically everything I love in black metal - punky rhythms and astonishingly beautiful melodies. Music this good is a big reason why I'm happy with life.

I'm convinced, this kind of music will be the death of PM as we know it. So bland and unimaginative.

Is that one before or after You'd Prefer An Astronaut? Hum's guitar tone is so thick and heavy. It's like Failure on steroids!

I listened to Thergothon's Stream from the Heavens for the first time today and holy shit... it's amazing! I bought it a few months back and since then it's been sitting on the shelf. Until today, that is. The guitars and bass are absolutely crushing! My only complaint is the snare, which sounds like a cardboard box full of pebbles!

It's their last album. As much as I love You'd Prefer an Astronaut, that album really has nothing on Downward is Heavenward. The former is a really great album full of wonderful songwriting and performances, but the latter is an utter masterpiece. Hmm..trying to think of a non-controversial metal parallel...

Imagine if Varg had followed up the Burzum debut with a single album that had all of the best bits of Det som engang var, Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem all rolled into a magically cohesive vision, then immediately put an end to the project.

Griffin - Poseidon Society

I went several years loving the S/T without hearing Protectors of the Lair because of a general sophomore-slump consensus, and on first impression I feel confident in saying they were all wrong. Still has all the fantasy imagery and USPM tropes, just applied a bit more violently.
