Ashes' "Forest Psalms" EP is fine BM for fans of light and mournful BM with good riffs.

Available for totally for free from the label: http://www.archive.org/download/ASHES_F ... Dtm060.zip

A personal fav. My rec to the entire thread.

The tags are really strange. The first and third song lack a track number, but the second track is tagged as track 32.

already very familiar with In the Woods....have had everythign they recorded for a long time. I guess their early stuff does fit the bill, even though I actually prefer the Omnio period. As for Solstafir, I have one of their albums, Cold, and it doesn't even slightly resemble black metal. I enjoy it a little though and will definitely check out some of their more metallic material.

Ilwhyan, those two bands you listed last sound very interesting and I will listen to them today!

Good, I hope you will enjoy them!

I remember you saying something about Clandestine Blaze drumming that you found very appealing. I'm not sure if the drumming has the same feel that you enjoy in CB's drumming, but I was reminded of CB when I listened to Verge today. If you aren't familiar with them, you should check out their album Hatemagic, I think the production is the kind you like aswell. It's not experimental or eccentric, just very melancholic Finnish black metal, so it's not really relevant to your request.

Can someone recommend little known black metal with the standard 90's cold guitar tone, ala Nord by Setherial? PLEASE avoid the obvious names.

Just want to share this new band I discovered - Ancient Oak from Russian, been listening to the debut full length, which was before the band had vocals. It's only one dude and it's absolutely massive fuzzy atmospheric stuff.

Does anyone know of any fairly calm ambient black metal or space rock/black metal crossover bands? Something like this release by Nychts and Mortualia.

Definite fan of the Arckanum, but I've not heard the others - thanks. Liking the Blodsrit okay, not so much the Baptism. A bit more melodic/melancholic riffs would be great. I am considering comparing it to new Arghoslent, but in a definite black metal interpretation.

Also, another example of the style I'm looking for:
Nordreich - Verschlungene Pfade

Could anyone recommend me some depressive black metal in the vein of Austere's To Lay Like Old Ashes or Barbelith's s/t EP (http://barbelith.bandcamp.com/)?

Thanks

The Nordreich song reminds me of Satanic Warmaster quite a bit, but I assume you're familiar with that band. Goatmoon is similar to SW.

Incidentally, this is the kind of atmosphere I mostly try to avoid in black metal, as opposed to Baptism and its ilk.

Oh, definitely. They certainly have some aspects of the sound that I am after, but of course aren't really black metal in the slightest. Pretty big fan though.

Hello everyone, I'm from Chile and recently got into Black Metal, I really like it so far but I'm having trouble finding bands because to be honest I'm narrowing my search to only active bands that aren't NS nor having any ties to NS bands or labels, if anyone could recommend me some bands I'd be most grateful.

NS bands are the minority, thankfully. I can get past quality bands having idiotic ideologies, but I can't get past shitty music, which seemingly 95% of NSBM bands play.

The only thing I listen to from Satanic Warmaster is Strength and Honour, but it definitely has the same sound I'm looking for. I should hear more. I listened to some older Goatmoon (was already a fan of their 2013 compilation, but it's mostly acoustic folk). I like Death Before Dishonour quite a bit, but Varjot is really Excellent. Thanks!

Also, I gave Baptism another chance and upon looking past the single song "Morbid Wings of Sathanas", found I dig most songs from MWoS, also As The Darkness Enters. Will be listening to them more to solidify my opinion. Songs like Et Vidimus Gloriam Eius are good. I suppose the aforementioned tune "MWoS" is a weak, bland spot. So thanks to Ilwhyan for giving me the inclination to hear more.

Continuation of hearing the other recommendations;
Folkvang's production hurts my head; having trouble getting past that.
The Lutomysl is ehhh at first listen but may grow on me.
Cirith Gorgor - Onwards to the Spectral Defile is pretty good and I plan to give it more attention.
Bored with Membaris.
Sad - Devouring the Divine is great! Thanks for suggesting it, Sick6six.
Likewise, the Sarkrista is pretty good. Someone should write them a review, since they're such a new band with quite a decent first album.

ravagingthemassacred: Glad to hear it. Morbid Wings of Sathanas is a brilliant Baptism song in my opinion. I'm surprised that you particularly don't like it. I guess I won't recommend Kaevum then.

Check out Prevalent Resistance, either the first or second album. It should be what you're looking for. Horna also has a couple of lighter than usual songs one Envaatnags, Vala Pedolle and Kuoleva Lupaus. The rest of the album is darker. As for SW, check out their Behexen split. It contains SW's only excellent song I've heard, and the Behexen material should approximate your tastes somewhat more than their usual fare. If you're interested in checking out Behexen further after hearing that, I recommend you to go with the EP set From The Devil's Chalice and the debut album Rituale Satanum. Nattfog might fit the bill. I suppose you know Mgła already? You might also enjoy Funeral Throne.

Some French bands might be appropriate, like Vociferian and Insane Vesper.

I thought about reviewing Sarkrista, but as always, it's hard to find the motivation. It's a fine album, but again, not exactly my style.

John_Sunlight should know a plethora of band with that riffing style, but I think most of them are probably much less fast-paced and intense.

Give Aldaaron a whirl ravaging, especially the debut though they are more melody based but still might appeal to you.

Since we're already talking Baptism, anyone want to recommend some excellent like-minded black metal? I'm partial to the raw melodic side of bands like Baptism (Remains of Cursed Plague is a great example,) Shatraug's bands (Horna in particular,) Arvet etc. and am mostly familiar with the larger names.

Here's a couple to check out:

France's Christicide are an excellent example of raw, melodic, yet perfectly, meticulously crafted black metal. The self titled album is fucking amazing.

From Sweden are Matricide whose ep Holy Virgin is a stunning, harshly melodic slab of black atmosphere. The full length is also worth getting.

From Germany I give you Har Shatan. The album His Legacy is another awesome raw black metal album full of relatively simple, but effective song craft.

Back to Finland with Calvarium. Pretty good stuff here, though they probably have more in common with Behexen than Baptism (for obvious reasons...).

Back to Germany with the one man project Throndt. Not a bad album really for what it is.

Italy's Tenabrae In Perpetuum could be worth a listen if you're not already familiar.

From the Netherlands, Öde have a fairly good, raw melodic record in the form of Schimmenwoud. The mix could have been slightly better though, but still good stuff here.

Check out (if you haven't already) anything Myrkr related. Fucking awesome, raw, blistering black metal (sorry bout that shitty link though...).

Bout all for now I guess.

Mmmm... I checked those bands and it seems that only two of them aren't nsbm nor related to any nsbm bands or labels (Membaris and Sarkrista) but anyways thanks for helping.

I'm not so sure if they are a minority I mean I've looked around the web and the archives here and stumbled upon plenty of labels with at least one nsbm band and a lot of these bands seem to have a large fanbase who regard them as "good" or "awesome" (although I've searched only at last.fm for the moment) so to be honest right now I think that there's a lot of ns in black metal.

If there's anyone who thinks otherwise I'm open to more recommendations, thanks in advance.

You know what "minority" means, right? There's less than 200 NS bands (using "national socialism" in their lyrical themes or having NS in their genres, of course there's probably more bands, but not enough to make a big difference) on MA and there's 22 000 black metal bands listed. Do the maths.

Lowtide85, bands affiliated with national socialism are most definitely a minority in the black metal scene. I can't see how anyone would think otherwise.

I'm here to give everyone a heads up about the awesome split released by Spectral Lore and Mare Congitum. Both are excellent, atmospheric bands that I discovered last year and when I was informed of the plan to release a split between the two I was ecstatic. Both bands deserve much attention.

EDIT: Oh look, it's already on the archives and autothrall has put up a review of it!

Ok, I knew about the number of NS bands but didn't know there were more than 22.000 BM bands around the world so I apologize for not researching well enough, however I also mentioned labels who didn't have nsbm bands on them and I haven't found that many, so if anyone can recommend a label free from ns bands I would really appreciate it.

You've got to be kidding me... look at the lyrical themes of those bands. There is nothing even remotely close to NS about any of them and I can assure you the band members themselves are actually against retarded NS ideals. I've talked to many members of black metal bands and they all hate NSBM not only because they are against it, but stupid people end up labeling them as Nazis and cancel their shows/don't support them. Even if they did a release on a label with an NS band it's not like bands have any choice or control in who is signed to the same label.

Arckanum - Chaos-Gnostic Ideology, Anti-Cosmic Satanism, Pan
Blodsrit - Suicidal Thoughts, Longing for Death, Violence
Cirith Gorgor - Darkness, Witchcraft, Mythology, LOTR, War
Folkvang - Nature, Individualism, Dreams, Culture
Sad - Pessimistic Dark Aspects of Life and Beyond
Not sure where you get Nazis from these themes above :grumble:

Well if they're against NS then I don't see why would they be signed along nsbm bands on the same label, unless they signed in before the nsbm bands did, but even then they could just move to another label (or is it that hard these days to get signed?).

I see, well thanks for the clarification but I'll stay away from those labels and bands since buying stuff from them in the future would be supporting NS (to me at least).

I don't get why you're so absolute about this. There is no doubt that national socialism can be extremely offensive to many people, I completely agree with that, but if a label with 60 bands happens to be affiliated with 1 band that has some kind of admiration for NS then you can't listen to the other completely unrelated 59 bands? That makes no sense. You can avoid labels that are clearly supporting NS like Stellar Winter Records and you'll be just fine.

Continuation of hearing the other recommendations;

Glad you like some of them, you should definitely give multiple songs a try. Lutomysl's last album was not as good as the previous 3 or 4 so make sure you listen to those. Folkvang's music really broke out on the last 2 albums and the split with Pagan Hellfire is great too.
