da fuq, Metal Archives? it's been months since the last challenge! far too long in this poster's opinion. I've taken the initiative to kick things off with a challenge that i hope will prove to be both unique and inspiring to you.

THE CHALLENGE

"Write what you know." - Mark Twain

You will take an original photo of a place in your vicinity. The inspiration for your song will be drawn from the location captured in the photo.

Participants will submit 3 things:

1. the photograph
2. the music (duh)
3. a short text document explaining the connection between the photograph and the music

There is lots of room to maneuver in this challenge. You can choose to celebrate nature, capture the essence of your homeland, examine a place of personal significance in a cathartic manner, bring light to the problems that plague your town, etc.

I created this challenge in the hopes that we may be able to 'hear' a smorgasbord of locations. To 'see' the world through sound. To infiltrate the artist's mind and be taken away to the place in his/her photograph.

(more to follow)

----------

please use this thread to signal your intention to participate and also to discuss the challenge with fellow posters. I will edit the OP to let everyone know where to send/upload their submissions when the due date approaches.

Submissions due Monday, June 24th

This sounds really interesting but I think I'm going to be too busy during this time period to really record anything.

I'll try it but i'm only going to have my laptop for the next two months, so i'll have to see how that's going to work out. Might be able to just do a low-fi version or something.

we all know that low-fi recordings taken with only 1 microphone and your $100 practice amp are far more gr1m than studio takes

I won't even have an amp. Just my laptop. I guess I'll bring an SM57 so I can do some vocals.

I'm about to spend 2 months in west texas due to my job, so I'm thinking how I would represent a picture of that with music. What sounds like a hot dry desert? With rednecks and shitty beer?

Yea you can join!

I haven't done lyrics for my picture but I wrote a possible song for it. Might go for another and call it a day on it if I get the lyrics down this weekend.

Fuck, I haven't even taken a picture yet. This place is so damn desolate; there's nothing to take a picture of.

take a picture of nothing and then record a track of feedback to signify the emptiness.

Also I don't have a car for the next month and a half, so whatever picture I'm taking, I'm walking. Hmm. I have no clue how I would link music to a picture. This one might be tough.

I need to fucking record something for this. I've been working on it, but haven't had time to sit down and get shit done yet. Hopefully I'll be able to do something today and tomorrow.

As long as you took it I don't see why not I'm going to be using a picture from the winter.

i may be doing this by myself or with a friend. not sure yet. my style is rooted in the raw black metal with all of its crude neoclassicism and trance-like atmosphere. i could easily do this in one day, but to make it a challenge i might use a different sound

I'm done writing the guitar parts, and am currently writing the drums. I hope I don't screw that up. After that I'll synthesize the drum track and start recording guitars. Still not sure if I'm gonna do lyrics, but if so I'd still have to find a vocalist who wants to record them for me (I might know a guy, but nothing is certain).

I'm thinking of something like what Nagelfar did in some songs, clean or harsh or both. I'm gonna post samples in a sec.

Edit:

Clean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... Snw#t=451s
Harsh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 4ZmU#t=40s

I'll do my hand at practicing it during this week sometime, who knows maybe I'll surprise myself. I used to be able to do that harsh style but for so long I didn't and then started doing all the deeper death metal stuff I feel that my throat isn't shaped to do them anymore.

I really appreciate the thought, but it is very possible that I end up making an instrumental track or the friend I mentioned earlier wants to do it (I have to ask him since he said he was looking for bm musicians in need of a vocalist).
