Do they make music that has the coldness and atmosphere of black metal without the aggressive tremolo picking and vocals of black metal?

Darkness Eternal. Although there's a fair amount of tremolo picking, it might interest you.

Not what I'm looking for, sorry. I'm looking for non metal. I've been curious to know if there's music that is as dark as black metal that isn't black metal for a while. It seems like one of the genres I listen to mainly just happens to be dominated by darkness. Why aren't I aware of other styles of dark music? Where do I look?

See if you like Cisfinitum - Landschaft. It's ambient, but there are some parallels to certain kinds of black metal in terms of atmosphere and feel, even though Cisfinitum has nothing to do with black metal as such.

You might want to look into the world of dark/ritual ambient, industrial and noise/power electronics/death industrial.

well you should be more clear that you're looking for a non-metal release. Plenty of neo-folk, post-punk, ambient can be as "dark" as black metal. But this might be suited best in another forum.

I will, still need to get the Phlegein releases too. HHR has them I think, but I'm waiting for them to get a couple more things before I order. Check out the band I posted in the DM thread too, Pestreiter. Basically a nobody band that has only 1 song on youtube and a couple on their facebook.

There are loads of similar Aussie bands:

Bestial Warlust
Gospel of the Horns
Destruktor
Nocturnal Graves
Kill for Satan
Trench Hell (though they're a little more NWOBHM-ish)
Razor of Occam

Also definitely check out Ketzer from Germany.

Where's the best place to start with Drowning the Light? And if possible, a recording without a drum machine (if that exists).

Thanks

Looking for progressive black metal similar to Enslaved, In Vain and Ne Obliviscaris. Consisting clean vocals and perhaps some hints of jazzy elements would be good as well.

I have some of his releases and I'm still trying to decide that myself... "The Weeping Moon" was a good EP and the latest album "Oceans of Eternity" is good I think. "Of Celtic Blood & Satanic Pride" sounded pretty good from what I listened to, but haven't heard the whole thing. I'm curious what others would recommend from this band as well.

Averse - The Endesque Chants. Hits the nail right on the head. Has some harsh vocals but mainly consists of clean vocals.

So my friend and I are trading mixes. She's giving me doom in exchange for black metal. I have some ideas of what I want to do with it but I thought I'd ask for some recs. She said she's been listening to Burzum's first album a lot and it's probably the early Burzum album I'm least familiar... soooooo... suggestions for things along those lines?

2 bands you should familiarize yourself with are TOBC and Wigrid. Both are very influenced by the music of early Burzum.

Those are good, but more on the slow depressive side and Burzum's first album is actually a lot faster. I'd mix it up with some more fast paced stuff too.

I've got a working draft of it and I've tried to mix up some slow, atmospheric and depressive stuff like Wigrid with faster stuff like Horna. I do know she likes Filosofem and Hvis lyset tar oss as well so the slower songs shouldn't disappoint.

Cool, I figured you already knew about most bands like Horna so I didn't drop a bunch of names. Blood Red Fog is another good one that's very similar to some older Burzum stuff with a good mix of fast and slow. I like their self titled album, Radiating Desolation EP, and the split with Cosmic Church

I've been addicted to Finnish BM so Horna, Behexen and Clandestine Blaze made it in. I haven't listened to BRF since about 2006 or 2007 so thank you for reminding me of their existence!

No problemo! BRF's latest album "Harvest" is really good too. The last song had to much clean vocals for me, but still a great album overall. I'm currently listening to some Entartung songs on youtube thanks to Ilwhyan's suggestion and the 2 songs I heard so far are pretty badass. I just ordered their album along with Phlegein and the Forgotten Woods boxed set. Good stuff

Could someone direct me towards some "Filosofem"-esque black metal? Meaning, mid to low-tempo, small degree of electronica mixed in, not too well-produced, etc... I think you all know more or less what I mean.

Such a good album though I still think the album what came before is much better and Burzum's best work. To start the ball rolling check out TOBC's debut as well as the two Vietah albums, particulary the debut. I also think you should try Evilfeast, a different beast to Burzum but the same type of atmosphere is created with his awesome keyboard work, start with the Lost Horizons album, a stunning album, aggressive but beautiful at the same time. Zuriaake should also float your boat, the Winter Mirage ep has some very similar pieces to Filosofem.

Just noticed that Skagos's Anarchic is now streaming in it entirity. There have already been a few reviews up for a while, but they're just of two thirds of the album that the band previously put on band camp.

So I've been listening to Infernal War's Redesekration a lot lately and I love what a big sound it has. Something about it feels enormous, like I'm about to be run down by a battallion of tanks. I'd like recommendations for similar. It needs to be loud and aggressive but doesn't necessarily need to be constant blastiness.

You've probably heard some of these but,
Lugubre - Supreme Ritual Genocide (it's surprising that I can only find 2 songs from this album on youtube)
Spoiler: show

Kult Ov Azazel - This song is a beast
Spoiler: show

Besatt
Spoiler: show

Eternal Majesty criminally unknown band
Spoiler: show

Fornication
Spoiler: show

Edit: Graupel - Am Pranger
Spoiler: show

Pact

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Katharsis, Ragnarok, Salvation 666, Svarttjern also come to mind, but I won't post all those videos. Hope some of those work

Glad you liked them... I almost didn't add Pact because of their dark atmospheric sound, but their first album is amazing and unique, can't wait to hear more from them. Eternal Majesty said something about quitting due to lack of support, but I think they are working on new material now. Their first album is impossible to find a factory copy of, but it's been one of my favorites for years. Their second album is just as good though.

Edit: I'm going to order the Sargeist compilation from WTC and I listened to a sample from their other 3 newest releases: Acherontas, Paria, and Membaris. They all sound pretty good, anyone listen to any of those bands much?

You guys heard this? I'm currently reviewing it, it's pretty damn good. Well produced aggressive black metal with hints of Norway, Sweden and orthodox stuff. Quite unique in the QC black metal scene. The demo is also very interesting.

I have been getting back into black metal recently and was wondering what good black metal releases have come out in the past couple of years.

A couple recent ones that i have heard have been
Summoning
Xanthrochroid

Any kind of black metal will do.

Yeah I had to buy both of their re-released albums along with the Sargeist and that new Paria CD which also sounds awesome.

Inquisition's latest release "Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm". Amazing album. The vocals might be hard to get used to unless you already like Abbaths vocals from Immortal.
