I haven't a clue but I looked at their MA page and some folks have rated these two bands as somewhat similar:
Umbra Nihil - http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Umbra_Nihil/8739
Dead Wish - http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Dead_Wish/30786

I'll check them out as well.

Can you recommend me something that sounds like Down's NOLA album? I really like heavy mid-tempo riffs that make you headbang, and NOLA's filled with them - Bury Me in Smoke (especially the outro), Eyes of the South, Lifer etc.

I've listened to a lot of doom/stoner metal bands (Sleep, Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar etc.), but I don't really like them that much. I don't think their riffs are as good and I don't like that 70's retro production. Also, I prefer Anselmo's deep voice and occasional "yeahs" (like "GODDAMN" at the beginning of Eyes of the South). That also makes me headbang.

I'm mentioning NOLA specifically, because I like it a lot more than their second album. I think NOLA's got better riffs, though I do like the second album too. The third album and the Purple EP are both extremely boring to me, except for the song Three Stars and One Sun.

Thanks in advance!

Anything Corrosion of Conformity have done. Start with WiseBlood or Deliverance. Move on to In the Arms of God.

Thanks for the recs shouvince. I should have paid more attention to the similar bands page, as Umbra Nihil is definitely along the lines of what I was looking for

Dead Wish... not so much. The one song I could find on youtube sounded alright, but the production left a few things to be desired (might have been youtube though) and from what I can tell the demo is instrumental only. It's a shame this band never released anything else though, I'd have been interested to see how a full length would have turned out.

Any other suggestions would be welcome!

I guess you're already familiar with AiC. If not then check out anything by them (apart from their 2 acoustic EPs which are cool when you're in a different mood rather than headbanging) for headbangable heavy mid-tempo riffage. And as PhantomGreen has mentioned, anything by COC as well. The Ethereal Mirror and The Carnival Bizarre by Cathedral. Anything by Orange Goblin, Kyuss, Goatsnake, Horn of the Rhino (formerly known as simply Rhino), Alabama Thunderpussy, Red Fang, newer supergroups like Kill Devil Hill, A Pale Horse Named Death etc.

Well I can vouch for most of the bands listed on the Related tab on http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Whi ... _Wept/2228

WHW are epic doom. Though I think they're more sugary/symphonic sounding than the other bands there. Atlantean Kodex is similar but with a rough, ancient production. Solitude Aeturnus might be the closest to WHW I think.

Usputni, while not necessarily the same, check out the bands that Down member also play in and the NOLA/Louisiana seen in general , there's so much great shit to be found.

I'm looking for some post-metal/atmospheric sludge stuff that's actually as crushing as Neurosis at their heaviest (TSIB for example). I've noticed that a lot of these atmospheric sludge bands significantly water down the sound. While there definitely is some great lighter stuff of that variety, I'm looking for something more jarring and extremely heavy.

^Probably one of the best atmospheric sludge albums which isn't by the big 3 of the genre.

Too obvious then, ha ha. I agree, but then again I'm an absolute nutter for them. :P

Considering your extensive crust/hardcore knowledge I don't think I can be much of a help here. Plus, most of what I hear in that kind of sound turns more towards Isis, COL and similar acts. Nothing as heavyweight as TSIB.

Early Amenra is very rough around the corners though, although due to a more pronounced hardcore presence. Later on they tend to mellow down, and their latest is highly atmospheric and subdued. Have you heard early Isis though? Specifically their EPs. I've been wanting to hear them for way too long, and word says they're a whole different band there. But then again I'm just stating the obvious am I not?! :D

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll try and check them out when I get the chance. Haven't had much metal listening time lately, with my car stereo on the fritz and a lot of time spent with the parents lately.

Thou I sort of like, some of their stuff is cool but I feel they spread themselves too thin. Planks sounded cool, I'll check out more from them. I like some Amenra but I'm not sure how I feel about their mathy sections (if that's the proper way to describe it).

Yeah, I've even done a review of Mosquito Control. Fantastic stuff, although completely removed from later day Isis. Still atmospheric but very brutal at the same time. The Red Sea is pretty cool as well, although probably not quite as good. Sawblade I have mixed feelings for. Some songs are really cool and others meh.

Canadian epic doom metal band Funeral Circle's debut album is up for streaming on their bandcamp. Been waiting a while to hear the completed thing, and it's unsurprisingly good stuff.

Check it out: http://funeralcircle.bandcamp.com/

And fuck, and I just noticed that Age of Taurus posted a new track from their upcoming album two weeks ago. I feel silly for missing it, especially considering that their 2010 demo was incredibly solid and got many plays from me.

Oh yeah, man can't wait to hear both of these albums. Both FC and AoT's demos were amazing stuff.

I'm listening to the new Evangelist http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Ev ... nes/370298 and it's pretty good, albeit a bit too christian for my taste compared to their debut. Oh well, I can tolerate christian doom when it's that great. I'll write a review for the album in the coming weeks.

You guys need to check out Black Oath as well, awesome Italian occult doom. Their new album is better than the debut.

Is it? I've been a fan of them since hearing their s/t EP years back and definitely felt that the debut wasn't as consistent as it could've been. So that's great to hear :) I'll check out the two track that they've got on bandcamp.

Gave Evangelist a very brief try with their debut, but didn't click with me. Maybe I'll give them another try.

The new Age of Taurus track seemed a bit... slow? I mean, their demo was a bit more rocking in general, so this kind of surprised me a bit. Not sure what to think of it.

I'll be seeing Blood Ceremony (and Kylesa) this Sunday, and that should be pretty good. I hear Blood Ceremony are fantastic live.

My Evangelist review is almost finished and it's not a very positive one finally, the new Procession is way better.

Ah, cool Blood Ceremony is awesome live! I'll see them again in August, keep me posted about their new tracks.

Don't know if I should put this in the stoner topic or the death/doom topic... I'm looking for groovy stoner rock/metal, with brutal death metal vocals. The closest I found is Acid Witch, but they're not that groovy.

Don't know if this is drone or post-metal but I need help looking for more bands like Year Of No Light. Preferably more like their instrumental songs. Last.fm similar artists did not help much.

Magister Templi are a fairly new heavy/doom band from Norway and their upcoming album, Lucifer Leviathan Logos can be listened to in its entirety on Cruz Del Sur's bandcamp: http://cruzdelsurmusic.bandcamp.com/alb ... than-logos

It's pretty good stuff, from what I've heard so far.

They opened with another new track, Witchwood (they said it was the opener on the new album, I think, so it'd be that), but I can't comment much on it because the vocals were practically inaudible during their performance, much to my dismay. Other than that (which really killed it for me a decent bit) and how their set was only a half hour, it was pretty good. I approached someone at the start of the evening to comment on his Vitus shirt and it ended up being their guitarist and we chatted for a nice bit about music and such, so that was cool, too. The whole band seem like a nice bunch of folks, from what little interaction I had with them.

Could you recommend me some doom-rock, psychedelic fuzz-rock or '70's retrock with progressive song structures, deep lyrics, and perhaps some indirect social commentary or geeky historical or philosophical references? Something like OGRE (whose albums I already have) or Count Raven is what I'm sort of angling after here.

Black Sabbath, aside from being the first metal band, were simultaneously the first doom metal band, so if you haven't fully checked out their catalogue, then now you have a good reason to.

And then there's Candlemass, who are probably the second biggest name in doom metal, with a whole slew of legendary albums like Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams, and Tales of Creation. Everything after that is either solid (Chapter VI, Death Magic Doom) or merely alright (From the 13th Sun, King of the Grey Islands).

And then there's the big death/doom bands of the mid-90s: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema. While only the former stuck with their guns since then, all three are still tremendously solid groups for different reasons.

Assuming you already know Black Sabbath.

There's a good chance you already know them if you like Count Raven, but maybe Lord Vicar.

For the guy just getting into doom, I would also recommend Goatsnake and Black Pyramid's first album.

Hadn't heard them, but many thanks for the recommendation, Metantoine! Awesome stuff indeed - didn't think doom could be that upbeat, but the vid is kind of a heady mix of Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath and early Iron Maiden; I like! I'm in China currently, so I may have to take you up on that offer of help laying hand on their demos.

Thanks, dystopia4! The only album of Count Raven I have is his newest one, Mammons War; I hadn't thought to check out his splits. I'll take a look at Lord Vicar and Griftegård.

The new Age of Taurus full-length is getting some spins here lately. I dig it, although it sounds too similar to Candlemass on occasion, like the track "Walk with Me, My Queen". On that one even the vocal arrangements scream Messiah Marcolin ffs. The chorus is cute, though. But overall the band walks away from this album with an identity of their own. More so than, say, the latest Procession did, anyway. So does anyone here have any thoughts on Desperate Souls of Tortured Times? Oh, and I definitely recommend this album to anyone looking for some semi-epic traditional doom metal in 2013. Nice mix of slow and uptempo songs.

Oh it leaked! I'll listen to the album today. To be honest, I wasn't crazy about the new song a while ago as I had huge expectations. I also heard the Funeral Circle full length album yesterday, it was disappointing as well. The new Procession was saved by its awesome title track.
