Thanks Dr_Prozac. I'll give Warlock a listen.

Seems silly retroactively dismiss a heavy metal legend with a killer voice just because some people buy records based on tits.

Your request was phrased in a very douchey and dismissive way.

Seems silly to interpret my post like that, as I am in no way dismissing Doro, but on the contrary saying I want to check out some of the material. I phrased it that way to emphasize that I'm not interested in some daytime MTV/radio friendly choruses, especially if there's not much else.

Also how good is 90s Virgin Steele? Fucking awesome shit. I know they get worshiped here like nothing else this side of MR, but I always like rediscovering them after a long while. I go through periods where I don't listen to em, but hot damn do they pen some of the most original, kick ass metal out there...romantic, epic keys mixed with pulverizing USPM riffing and out of this world vocals. Just amazing. "Blood and Gasoline" is so killer.

Totally agree with you. I also like how emotive their music gets me. It's a subjective thing, sure....but come on, how can one not get moved by dark numbers such as ''Child of Desolation'', ''Summing The Powers'' or up-lifting-to-the-max material such as ''Blood and Gasoline'', ''Crown of Glory'', ''Victory is Mine'', Veni, Vidi Vici'', ect? They better hurry up re-releasing The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part 1 now so I can buy it.

What did Tad Morose sound like before they hired Urban Breed by the way? I rarely see people mentioning the band's earlier stuff so I'm curious.

"Weeping of the Spirits" or "Life Among the Ruins" have always been in a tie for my favorite track by them.

I honestly don't think anyone except for 5 or 6 people ever listened to pre-Urban TM...ha ha ha.

Here's the first song. I think it sounds fucking awesome. The combination of very aggressive verses with a more melodic, laid-back chorus and bridge is really killer. Their signature riff style is still intact, but they've gotten very aggressive over the last two albums to match the new singer. I liked Brian Allen on the last album, but he sounds way more skilled on this one. It was smart to get a guy who sounds nothing like Carl Albert, as there's no way he'd live up to the original. I loved Razorback Killers, so I'm really, really stoked for Electric Punishment.

:ugh:

It's "modern" in a very off-putting way, almost like the less impressive moments off of Megadeth's Endgame turned into power metal. It's got that same indistinct not-quite-heavy-not-quite-power-not-quite-thrash riffing style that Dave Mustaine uses when he can't think of an actually good riff, it's got a "badass" vocalist who tries too hard (ARGH! I! AM! THE! SHOUTY MAN!), it's got that godawful Andy Sneap-like production job that's spreading through metal like a cancer, and nothing very likable about it. Not only is it not half as good as Digital Dictator, it's not even half as good as Warball.

Well at least it's not as bad as Sacred Oath's latest disgrace to its '80s legacy, but it's not something I would want to listen to again.

I don't know, I think you ought to give it more time. Did you not hear Razorback Killers? I liked that a lot more than Warball for sure. It's basically just Vicious Rumors' basic style with thrash thrown in, they still use a lot of the same melodies and harmonies that they did on Digital Dictator. It doesn't sound much at all like modern Megadeth to me, aside from the incredibly general similarity of both containing some melodic thrash.

I'm only about 4 tracks in, but this is fucking awesome. Riffs everywhere, and Brian Ross sounds damn near flawless!

I am hearing a little bit of "Agent Steel"-ism with that new VR song. As in, what they did on "Alienigma," which I found pretty lame compared to what came before.

Could be worse, but could be way better. Not as good as the last couple.

Wait, what? Warlock have songs that are more powerful than Priest circa SFV? Do you mind showing me them? :P

That Winterhawk is excellent, yes. I actually prefer it to any Rush album. I think it was reissued not so long ago, it's relatively easy to find.

What, do we not just make stuff up as needed? I was just trying to prepare him for the party metal that he was so obviously not gonna like. I wish all of SFV sounded like the title track and Riding on the Wind. Edit: Or just Electric Eye reworked for 9 songs would be a killer album.

I'm taking a very brief break from my non-stop spinning of Hell's demo reissue and Nuns Have No Fun to spin Mysterium. Sounds fresh after a little time away, and I suspect I'll be calling it an unheralded masterpiece 4 years from now. Mostly I just have a riff stuck in my head that I think might be from this album. If it's not, I'm going to spiral into madness.

Mysterium is probably my favorite since Spiral Castle, with Voyager trailing not too far behind.

No matter how hard I try I can't seem to get into Playground.

Winterhawk is readily available on CD thanks to Rockodrome - the same folks who put that Ashbury release on CD :)

Hell's demo stuff is indeed pretty rad. There are some other tracks that aren't on that second CD that might be on youtube or elsewhere, too.

I've listened to Satan's new album a handful of times so far and goddamn is it ever good. I'm glad that it lived up to the first two tracks and didn't pull an Immortal Soul on us :P

I've warmed up to it a lot in the last few years but I still hardly ever play it. If I'm listening to Priest, it's almost always the 70s shit. Sad Wings, Sin after Sin, Stained Class and Unleashed in the East are those "if my house were burning down" kind of perfect albums. Screaming and Defenders are both kind of background noise albums for me, wouldn't say I actively dislike either of them though. Good for being drunk and singing along with or listening to in the car.

I found a live video of them performing a ballad called "Judas" that was pretty much 100% soft with David Halliday singing his heart out. It was fucking amazing. I didn't really have any kind of expectations for Hell and I've been completely floored. The weeping moaning first verse to Blasphemy and the Master sounds so intensely emotional I love how committed Halliday was to selling it. Pretty obsessed with The Quest too. What the fuck happened there? They decided to leave alone the satanic majesty for a few minutes and make this perfect little dungeon crawling metal tune. It's a pocket of weird uplifting positivity and it works because the character of his voice is so crazy and the riffs are simplistic genius.

I almost convinced myself to listen to Disc 1 and then I was like get the fuck out of here play the demo again.

I think the remastered new Hell album is what they intended it to sound like all along. The demos are great but the new one is awesome in its own way - personally I think the production is excellent. Just a huge, theatrical metal show. "Blasphemy and the Master" and "The Devil's Deadly Weapon" are so fucking good.

Well, I of course totally love their 70s material too, but Screaming and Defenders are just incredibly fun - check out the live DVD from their '82 tour, it's fucking amazing. Devil's Child for example is pure hard rock/metal awesomeness, with Halford putting on an absolutely stellar performance. It's simpler than their earlier material, sure, but that doesn't really bother me. I guess if you're not as into hard rock like AC/DC or whatever it might not be up your alley, but I can't get enough of it. Really I'd put the best of their 70s and 80s material on the same level; I may prefer one or the other depending on my mood, but I listen to both about equally.

Judas is one of my favorites by them! Such a sad, yet beautiful track. Check out Depths of Despair for another somber one. I agree with your sentiments on Blasphemy & the Master and The Quest, too. Really interesting band that were pretty unique and ahead of their time. This interview with Kevin Bower from years back is quite good if you're looking to learn a bit about the band and their early days.

I have no issues with the rerecorded tracks on the album proper, just to briefly weigh in on that matter.

Damn, some of those old Hell tracks sound pretty fucking awesome, I wish the demos were easier to find, particularly this one and this one. The stuff I heard on YouTube is fantastic, particularly Depths of Despair and Where Angels Fear to Tread.

Yeah, I love Immortal Soul.

New Satan is also ruling. I'm really glad they didn't go with the lame "generic modern" production sound that bands like Hell, Forte, and Heathen did for their comebacks.

Hahaha, I like the album overall, but all of the early tracks were pretty fast, speed metal-esque stuff that really gave false hopes and impressions :P

I agree with that. I definitely wish it had been more speedy overall, like the first couple tracks.

Yeah I dunno, I love Immortal Soul's bluesy, melodic rock tracks maybe even more than the speedy ones. There's an album I haven't heard lately. I just think the vocals and melody are so good that it doesn't matter the tempo of it. I can definitely see why people wouldn't care for the slower bits though.

Same. The title track is a stinker, though, when compared to the rest. Since the leak of that album I can't get into it. Just doesn't have the same catchiness as the others.

I always thought it was one of the choice cuts. Magnificent lyrics and some killer hooks.

I still have the leak with some of the beginnings of songs cut off, which makes me feel bad, especially since Mark Reale died in between then and now. I should buy the full album.

what? speaking about Riot? They are my absolute favorite band. Thundersteel is unforgettable and their new album is very very solid. I love vocal links. I love melodies. Drums, bass... Everything is right there. I am going to play it right now!

Too bad they will never play again...

Yeah, so, the new Vicious Rumors fucking kills. I admit that the production is a bit too modern to my liking, but Brian Allen has improved greatly and the band as a whole just sounds super energized and dripping with inspiration. They're one of the very few bands that has managed to take their sound in a fresh, new direction while still remaining immediately recognizable and kick-ass.

The new Vicious Rumors is killer! I love the pacing and the delivery, there's dynamic licks and riffs galore. Much better than Razorback Killers that's for sure (and that was decent too)

But I came here to make noise about Züül who are an incredible traditional metal band from the Midwest. Think Thin Lizzy! Think Running Wild! Think a less epic, more catchy Manilla Road! Think NWOBHM! They're simple but effective and they are great songwriters. They have two albums under their belts and each is a treasure.

A few samples;

Skull Splitter

Smoldering Nights

Warhammer

I definitely wish it had been more speedy overall, like the first couple tracks.

Ya know, I felt the same way at first and I think the speedier numbers are still my favorites (Wings are for Angels ftw) but one of my buddies who was around "back in the day" so to speak (saw the Stained Class tour when he was 12 etc.) said this about the album and I think it's spot on:

"Man, the fast tracks are great but they wouldn't be nearly as great if they didn't have the rockers too. That's how bands used to do it. You had the ragers and the rockers and they each made the other better."

Sure, in general I agree; you definitely need contrast, and I really like some of the rockers, like "Whiskey Man". My problem is that some of the rockers are just duds, and there are only a few really good speedy numbers, like "Riot" (holy shit, that track). I wish the ratio were skewed more toward the ripping speed metal than the bluesy rockers, basically.

You know, when it comes to Immortal Soul, I think that Crawling should be mentioned much more often, but that probably has to do with the fact that I'm a sucker for arabic melodies in metal. I agree with anyone who thinks that Riot is the best song from that album though. Fucking song has nothing to envy to Thundersteel's titletrack and, in fact, I think I prefer it over the latter.

Yeah I can agree with that... I think they could of dropped a couple of the slower tracks, made the album shorter, and made the ratio a little better. It didn't help that the opening track was one of the best speed metal songs written in the last decade... when you set the stage with that OF COURSE you're just going to want more!

This right here. Remember too that that track was the teaser track that they released well before the album came out, so I was really foaming at the mouth for a bunch more like it. Oh well, it's still a good album.
