What do you think about these two vocalists? I've always thought they were pretty similar in the fact that hey the rough baritone vocals, Who do you like better?

While Joakim (and Sabaton in general) is okay every once in a while, I could listen to Piet Sielck/Hansi Kursch/Jens Carlsson for hours.

Sielck is better, even when Iron Savior is only decent, his vocals are a standout aspect.

Noone beats Andreas Babuschkin for mainstream power metal though.

I wouldn't call Piet's vocals baritone. Gruff, yeah, but he has a pretty stellar range.

Sielck is by miles better; he has a better tone, his vocal lines are more interesting/catchier, and his range is wider than Joakim's. It's not like the latter is an accomplishment though, as Brodén's range spans, like, half an octave.

I never particularly enjoyed Broden's vocals, I mean, he's not horrible, but he's miles behind Sielck. He has a limited range and in all honesty, that range does nothing for me.

I like Sielck more(and Babuschkin), but i think Herbie Langhans from Sinbreed is best among vocalists with similar style Dust to dust.

Sabaton is okay. Joakim's problem is that he sometimes is over dramatic and forced. He needs to be more natural.

Not that I don't like over dramatic (I'm a Defeis fanboy for god's sake) but Joakim cannot pull that off.

Both are easily the best (most tolerable) European power metal vocalists.

A baritone can have a wide range just as a tenor can, and it's possible for a baritone to reach relatively high notes aswell. Technically, it's possible for a well-trained singer classified as a baritone to sing, say, Robert Plant's lines in Led Zep's songs. There's a common misconception that a baritone singer is a very low one, whereas it's actually average for men, and most men's voices fall under the category of baritone.

Personally, I'd love to see more appreciation for lower male voices in traditional metal (although the ability to sing relatively high notes is quite essential in power metal, especially). Not gimmicky low stuff, but powerful voices like Di'Anno's.

Black Destiny has a vocalist in this style and they're also very cool.

I think the reason I like them is because they're not as high pitched. I'd sooner have Broden than Kursch, Tony Kakko, or Fabio Lione.

Sabaton, Iron Savior and Rebellion are some of my favorite bands mainly due to vocals.

I don't think you can compare Kürsch with the last two, Wily. Hell, if anything, Lione is the black sheep of that group, because Kakko is perfectly capable of adding big amounts of grit to his voice when he wants to.

Yeah, Kursch and Kakko don't even have high pitched voices or even go that high all the time. Not a very good example.

Okay, maybe pitch was the wrong word. There's definitely a difference in their tone of voice that's make or break.

Off putting, quite cheesy.

Badass.

And speaking of Jens Carlsson, what ever happened to Persuader?

According to their facebook page, it actually seems like Persuader is ready for a release sometime either this year or the beginning of the next.

Piet Sielck sounds awesome on Metropolis. Like he's been drinking too much whisky and smoking cubans all day. Not my favourite Savior record, but it's my personal choice for his voice.

Who's Piet Selick? Never heard of him. :D

Pretty thin topic. The answer is I MUCH prefer Sielck over the guy from Sabaton, who can barely sing, sounds forced when he goes "gruff" and has a rather annoying diction. But Sielck is nonetheless to Kürsch what Martin is to Dio. Even if Piet was active before Hansi, one listen to the Iron Fist demos tells you just how many cues he took from him later on.

The Larsen brother who sings also fits this style, and does it better than Piet Sielck (who isn't much of a singer after all, but sings out of necessity and for practical reasons) and arguably even better than BG's bassist-turned-frontman. Too bad the bulk of his output is with Manticora.

Very nice find thanks to Empy, though: that Black Destiny stuff is good! Me likes! :metal: :nods:

Also, whatever happened to Excelsis, beyond their one, amazing track picked up by Sielck so that they would be at least one great song technically on 'Unification'? Their singer was (is?) incredible and exactly in line with what you seem to be looking for, here. It's one of these bands I've been meaning to check out properly for ages, but never got around to actually checking out.

Is it safe to say that this has become a thread about Europower singers? And if not, can we turn it into one?

Emp, you got me really excited about black destiny, then I saw that they split up.

The thing about broden is he's not a great vocalist, but he doesn't need to be for the music he's in. Honestly, sabaton would be much better if they could stick selick in there, but obviously that won't happen. Sabaton is mid tempo power with fanfareish keyboards and basic riffs and in general he gives off the appearance of a drill sargent barking orders. Though to put him in something even slightly oven the top, much less say a virgin steele or lost horizon, would pretty much spoil him as a vocalist.

Actually Evangelion, I think that Attila Dorn is living proof that you can easly make music not unlike Sabaton's without the need for constipated grunting. Say what you will about Powerwolf, but the man is a vocal titan.

Meh, I like his melodies. Sure, the guy is as hammy as you can get, but I like him. Can't say the same about most of the band's output though.

Nothing lame on "Lupus Dei" and "Blood of the Saints", and the other two albums have their high points of excellence as well... so, no.

That awful song with the "Die, Die, Dynamite" shit is just so annoying. There's campy, and then there's just lame/trying too hard.

Sabaton with a different singer would be garbage. Broaden is the reason that band kicks so much ass.

Maybe if you don't know any other good power metal.

Moving on then, other good Europower vocalists...Dirk Thurisch from Angel Dust? That guy from Dark at Dawn? Motherfuckin' Tarot?

Yes, yes, and YES. The guy from Dark at Dawn can get just a tad irritating at times though, what with his "if Piotr Wiwczarek sang power metal" tone and inflection.
