Im thinking of starting a thrash band- but before I do, I would like some help on vocals. I want o know a bit more about doing the James hetfield rasp-thing. And maybe some info on slayer style shouting (e.g. Is it just plain shouting or is there a way ti do it more safely etc.) Thanks in advance for any help.

If it hurts, you're doing it wrong.

You can ask in the Void of Vocalists topic, but the thing about harsher vocals is it is generally hard to give advice on it. Firstly, I'd recommend learning to sing to some degree cleanly - you don't need to be perfect, but learn about controling your breath so you can sing a line or two without needing to stop for a breath, and breathing from your stomach. It is all about the way you move the air from your stomach out of your mouth, and the most important thing to remember is that your throat should really only serve as a passage way, don't try to distort and add grunt there, because most likely that is going to hurt and, as said, if it hurts, you are doing it wrong.

If it hurts, you are doing it wrong.

If it hurts you are doing it wrong.

Just remember that, and you should be fine - you'll get there, but it may take time until you are happy.

All the power comes from your diaphragm, remember that. And all extreme metal singing will wear down on your vocal chords a bit, but properly warming up and not pushing too hard will really help. Sip some apple juice when you're singing to cut down on any mucous in your throat. Avoid dairy products. When your voice gets tired, let it rest. And definitely learn some clean singing, even if you're not great at it. Thrash vocalists still need to stay in key.

The typical falsetto screams are not up to anyone. I never managed to place one, though I'm pretty at ease with early Max Cavalera vocal style.
