Look at the background of that artwork. Looks like something way more sinister was supposed to be showing, until someone barfed up vanilla 3d models everywhere.

It seriously would look a billion times better if it were just Eddie standing there as he's the only part of that art that actually looks good.

Cancer - Black Faith
Image

Gorefest - Soul Survivor
Image

Gorefest - La Muerte reminds me of Napalm Death's mostly terrible 'collage of confusion' covers
Although I quite like this, it only reminds me of the above.
Image

I really like that Megadeth - Killing iz my biz cover, much more than the newer one :p

Great album..but WTF of a cover is this...lame doesnt even come close!!!

Image
Ugh..WTF is this? Is it a Tiger is it a Man? is it the last surviving Thundercat?

Image
Hate to say it, but not only the cover was weird the album is pretty bad. Maybe 1-2 songs are good.

Last and not least...I know its not a metal album, but it has Metallica in it so its at least 1/4 metal
Image
The only thing worse than this atrocity of cover..is the music itself. Works great if you are trying to get rid of ghost inside your home.

Monstrosity's "Millennium" immediately comes to mind. What the fuck is it?

I actually kinda like the artwork for Technical Ecstacy. It has a certain proggy feel to it.

Not down to go through this whole thread because it's a pretty common one, but here are some absolutely awesome covers that will/have been inevitably mentioned by people. People who are wrong.

Wolf - Wolf

Any Riot album with that seal thing on it.

Thank you.

Dream Theater never had a good album cover, but this is their worst. Child on the cover represents how they make preschool music. And the worst part is that their cohorts and clones seem to want to follow suit with the children on their album covers as if they have some sort of child fetish.

Progressive metal has always had shitty artwork though. Here's another one: Chickenwire Titties by Pain of Salvation.

These aren't that bad. They're creative and a breath of fresh air considering how predictable most metal album covers can be. The rest of this thread is giving me headaches though.

How many people didn't listen to this album because of that cover art? I bet it's a big number.

^haha, 665- Neighbor of the Beast. I get it!

Okay, so the artwork is kinda lame, but it's not like a lot of these bands had a huge budget for artwork or anything.

Yeah, of course the Absurd demo covers are hand drawn by a couple of teenagers. Almost ALL demo covers are hand drawn, and if the band in question is in fact comprised of teenagers, well, you cant expect much more (and lets not forget Wolf and Hendrik were both in their mid-teens when they made those.)

Anyone remember that list that was circulating on the internet a few years back with the worst album covers of all time? I'm too lazy to look it up right now but I think that Manowar cover was actually on that list. I've seen several other metal bands that qualify- some on this thread very well could make it as well. Although I've seen some posted on here which honestly arent even that bad!

A lot of "worst album covers ever" lists I've seen have Dawn of the Black Hearts as the cover. I really wouldn't put it in that position since it's a bootleg and it wasn't Mayhem's idea to use the picture of brainless Dead for it, but I can see how people would be shocked/offended by it.

That's kind of a rule with Prog bands, it seems. Prog Metal especially.

It's really interesting how musicians who try to push the whole "mature/cerebral artwork" angle seem to have the worst grasp on what constitutes any kind of truly intelligent, elegant, tasteful or "classy" visual art... Prog Metal album art is always so tacky and cheap looking.

It is especially evident to a graphic design student once you recognize half the digital imaging effects and typefaces as lazy PhotoShop presets and unoriginal/overused typefaces.

So much fucking cheese.

Anyway, while I actually sort of like it, I know a lot of people hate the cover of "Race of Cain":
http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/5/8/4/158445.jpg

I can understand why, even if I do like it. It does admittedly have a sort of a nauseatingly "90's" mom-rock band feel... like, you remember when shitty-ass adult-contemporary-disguised-as-Alt-Rock bands like later Goo-Goo Dolls, Tonic, Train and so on were so popular around 1998? At the time, "old-looking" photographs and sort of quasi-Victorian styles seemed really popular in videos and graphic design work, and images like on the cover of RoC appeared on countless albums by those shitty bands. That whole style was totally unavoidable at the time, and part of me still hates it because of that.

Something about its incongruity with the music on RoC makes it appealing for me, though.

I love this band, but this downright gangster rap aesthetic. What were they thinking?

 that was so terrible that it actually has good comedic potential. It looks like a poster for a gorey-NCIS/Law & Order show but with a black metal guy as the protagonist.

This is not the worst cover but Voivod's latest album's artwork seems a bit odd.

Image

But then again, I think a kid of some relation to the band drew it. So it could be classified as 'adorable' :)

^ Nope, Away drew it like all the other covers. I didn't like it much at first, but I do like the colors and the logo, it's quite iconic.

On a different note, this has got to be one of the worst ever:

I'm into the new Voivod artwork. It's simple but I get a sci-fi warzone idea from it, which looks neat. It matches the sound of the album nicely too.
