Not looking for anything too fancy, just some desert themed metal. Ambience would be great. I would like a band or an album that makes me feel like I'm in an unrelenting desert wasteland.

No ambience, but one of my all time favorite albums has a desert theme: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Vi ... ert/294749

Obligatory Kyuss mention. Fathers of Stoner metal and often called desert rock.

I'll second Kyuss ad infinitum. Also, as henkkjelle pointed out, the final Virus release is desert themed. If you haven't heard Virus, do so right fucking now.

I would also suggest a Swedish stoner rock/metal band called Dozer. As iriki mentioned, there is a whole subgenre dedicated to this sound, routed in stoner rock/metal. If you were looking for desert themed metal in a certain subgenre I would suggest mentioning which subgenres you would prefer. In desert rock though you can also check out:
Dala Sun
Orange Goblin
Monster Magnet (lots of ambience)
Heck maybe even some UFOmammut (lots of ambience)

Solstafir have a kind of dry, expansive, atmospheric, spaghetti western feel to them. It may not be blatantly obvious, but kind of subtle.

Certain forms of funeral doom and drone metal can give you this sensation.

The most obvious example is "Forgotten" by Ocean of Ghosts. Great ambient/funeral doom/drone hybird.

Tracks such as Void of Silence's "Human Antithesis" and "The Grave of Civilization" are also archetypal exercises in post-apocalyptic wasteland metal. Void of Silence in general are probably exactly what you're looking for.

Young Hunter, tho they're a bit more rock than metal, but they are definitely worth checking out. Desert stoner doom metal/rock.

I would like to second Kyuss (duh), Young Hunter, UFOmammut and Solstafir (primarily for Kold).

Otehi is cool, a mix of raw stoner type stuff and crazy psychedelia (it kind of has the same effect as ambient black metal). While not quite metal enough to be on the archives (although I'd say they're very close to being stoner/doom) Blaak Heat Shujaa make amazing psychedelic stuff. Naam's album is amazing and makes me think of being high in the desert at night.

It's nothin' fancy, but Chalice's "Winter in the Desert Sky" immediately came to mind for me. For me, it always conjures up imagery of the Southwest U.S. at dusk, with the great big desert stones silhouetting a clear, deep blue sky.

As many users here already know, I live in the middle of the Mojave Desert. To be honest though, nothing matches the great vastness of it than Ambient, or Drone music. Lights in a Fat City, Thuja, Barn Owl and Desert Triptych by Tom Heasely. I also recommend He Whose Ox Is Gored and Megaton Leviathan.

I've also recently started my own band. We've only had one practice so far but were going for "desert themed" with a Skagos/ Yoga kind of vibe.

A desert themed Skagos? That would be incredible if you could pull it off.

I like Darkestrah's "The Great Silk Road." It's atmospheric (almost Drudkh-like) black metal with a desert/Middle Eastern sort of vibe to it.

Singularity has a track called Desert Planet and they are Arizona locals so they know first hand what the desert is like.

Does patrolling the mojave make you almost wish for a nuclear winter? Seriously that's one of the most intriguing and exciting band ideas i've heard in a while. There's tons of middle eastern themed death metal but not a lot of black metal for it, which honestly I think suits black metal better.

I second what Tony rec'd. Their first album is nearly perfect and their other two are great, as well.

Myrath is a nice Tunisian prog band, clean vocals singing sandswept Saharan lyrics.
Some of Hurd's metal albums have been redone in acoustic versions that feature Mongolian traditional instruments.
Saudi black metal by Al Namrood; the keyboards give a strong Middle Eastern vibe. And Arabic is just interesting when demonically rasped since about a billion people see it as a scriptural language!
But the best I've heard must be the half-hour song "Jilwah" by Dhul Qarnayn. It's all ambient with a very creepy chanted chorus. The whole thing definitely sends you off searching for something under endless dunes.

How in the fuck has Earth's HEX: or Printing in the Infernal Method not been posted? That's some strange desert american western drone/ambient. Easily my favorite Earth record as well.

If you're into black metal, and don't mind production that isn't amazing, I would recommend Yazata from New Mexico:
http://yazata.bandcamp.com/album/reh-0311

Their most recent demo is great doomy, epic black metal.

How the hell has Desert Plains by Judas Priest not been mentioned?

Also, check out Glorior Belli. Black metal with groovy southern rock influence, with southern deserty type themes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHdigB8BZ7A

Indeed, and anything after Hex. Journey to Ixtlan isn't metal per se, but definitely has that vibe (with a little doom thrown in):

I have listened to Horseback (especially "The Invisible Mountain" and "Half Blood") during my travels in Utah and found those appropriate for the setting.

Just what I came here to recommend, along with the other bands on that label (Desert Records). Banshee and Malpais both definitely fit the bill, and anything that label puts out seems to have that same, quite excellent vibe. Definitely one to look out for, I think they'll be active again very soon.

No one mentioned Nile? They're egyptian metal.

Personally, I like Myrath - Tales of the Sands, very middle eastern desert feel to it:

On the power metal side of things, there's a band called Desert from Israel. And Symphony X released a concept album titled "V" dealing with Egypt.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of that label & I keep in touch with Patrick via email fairly regularly.

I would also recommend Drought, another New Mexico band, excellent drone/doom, their full-length is awesome.

The Ruins of Beverast has a desert themed song, The Desert Lair. It's one of his best songs, and it has a theme that's reminiscent of a motif in Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde (there's no way I could recall where exactly). I definitely recommend it.

Nice! I know another guy who went to one of the shows on that tour, and I'm quite jealous, as I like all 3 of those bands. I'm hoping some of them play out east at some point.

I'll add Harmahis to here. It's another side-project of Senmuth, about ancient Egypt. Although not metal, Karl Sander's side project would count. It's like Nile, just without the death metal.
