Hi, I'm looking for bands that would be labeled as "horror metal". Either because of lyrics that contain horror themes, or they incorporate elements of horror into their music (i.e. Organs, effects)

My main example would be Abysmal Grief.

Here's the opener from one of their albums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ceeRVEUhuk

I would like it to be either doom or death metal, but I'll check out any recommendations.

You should check out Hooded Menace. They play death/doom metal and have lyrics about horror :-D http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Hoo ... ace/112466

Many of the Razorback Records stuff qualifies.
I recommend the deathgrind band Machetazo. They don't have lyrics but are inspired by horror movies, and they play some ripping stuff.

Acid Witch's first album has some really fun old school horror atmosphere and riffing.

Mortician, of course. Samples and murderous grooves up the ass.

Cradle of Filth also have a lot of horror elements in their lyrics. Clive Barker's books are a big influence, Marquis De Sade, Sheridan Le Fanu,Bram Stoker and many others. "Dusk and her Embrace" album centers on gothic themes, "Cruelty and the beast" on Countess Elizabeth Bathory story, "Midian" on horror etc... There's also Notre Dame, Snowy Shaw's old band, which has a b-movies aura.

it might not be exactly what you're looking for but Swedish avant-garde BM band Diabolical Masquerade has an album - Death's Design that was (allegedly) meant to be a soundtrack of a horror movie....
great album, but only if you listen all 43 minutes of it in one piece, not butchered into 61 (!) tracks...

Echoing Marag on the Razorback stuff. I'd recommend Frightmare, Blood Freak, and especially Splatterhouse. Death metal with lyrics all about classic horror movies.

If you like an eerie atmosphere with a shrill organ, check out Verge's side of their split with Blood Red Fog, "Because It's Wrong".

Well, in terms of lyrical themes Necrophagia is about as "horror metal" as you get with all the Lucio Fulci influences and references.

However, they are of course simply a death metal band, and in my personal opinion, they are actually the first death metal band, with really only Death, Possessed and Master being contemporaries that early on, and IMO, though I will probably be blasted for it, I don't consider Death's Scream Bloody Gore a DM album, just thrash, nor do I consider Possessed's first album DM.

Horrific is fine if you like Acid Witch. Kinda helps they have the same guitarist.

As mentioned, a lot of Razorback bands, especially Engorged.
Their self-titled has songs dedicated to Zombi, the "Dead" series, From Beyond, etc.

Also, check out funeral/drone/doom band Moss, they have an EP inspired by the Blind Dead and their other albums always credit classic horror films like Tomb of Ligeia as inspiration.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Denial Of God. Their lyrics are mostly about horror, despite the name. Their most recent album Death and the Beyond is quite excellent. Mix of slow and blasting tempos, tons of emotion and bleakness in equal shares, almost hopeful at times then back to tragic... it just has to be heard, this one.

Impetigo its my choice, simple death/grind but the ton of horror references and the movie clip intros are the real deal. Check em out, they only have 2 full lenght albums but they are totally worth a listen.

Really? Not to be combative but that has to be some of the worst black metal I've heard.

It's like Blink -182 trying to mimic Transylvanian Hunger.

Prowler... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Prowler- ... 89?fref=ts

Horror related thrash metal that uses samples from the actual horror movies themselves, singer is VERY reminiscent of James Hetfield circa MOP era \m/

As was mentioned, Necrophagia immediately came to mind. I didn't read the whole thread, but isn't pretty much all death metal essentially horror themed?

Deliria is your band. Italian doom metal with church organ sounding keyboards and horror lyrics, seemingly inspired by Death SS, Abysmal Grief and the likes.

Ah, also there is Paul Chain. His earlier stuff in particular had a "horror" feel and aesthetic. In the Darkness, Life and Death, etc should do the trick, though the best overall (just for huge doom riffs and space-rocking guitars) is Alkahest.

I 2nd Denial Of God... for me they are the definition of "Horror Metal"...

and threadstarter, if you like Abysmal Grief and haven't heard of Denial Of God I'd be very surprised... and if not then check them out... I doubt it would be possible to be a fan of one and not the other...

The Denial Of God / Abysmal Grief Split may be a good place to start:)

None of the Living Remain. They are kind of a Crust/Death/thrash hybrid. Horror movie and book themed lyrics. Really good band that I've seen live numerous times.

"Horror Metal" has been used by many very different bands. It has no defined meaning. The definition you give is as valid as any other that's been used at various times, but FYI, "horror metal" isn't a thing.

Halloween (you know, "Don't Metal With Evil")
Also try some Pentagram for size. They are creepy in places.
Death SS, King Diamond, Paul Chain, Powers Court, Burning Brides and Danzig are other good ones that come to mind.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Nortt. One of the most horrifying bands out there!

Examples from each of his full length albums, from newest to oldest:
"Til Gravens Vi" from Galgenfrist

"Ligprædike" from Ligfærd

"Gravfred" from Gudsforladt

Ligfærd is my favorite and most "horror" out of those.

I think that Machetazo's member said in some interviews that they're songs had lyrics in spanish (though is impossible to understand what the hell are they saying,as typically happens in grindcore).

Hmmm... I can't think of the band now but I listened to this album on YouTube and it had a song about how old horror movies are awesome and these new ones are PG-13 and suck I think it may have had a line about CGI blood sucking too, can anyone help me find it again?
