RECOMENDATIONS SO FAR: Fen, Wodensthrone, Alcest, Les Discrets, Lantlos, Coldworld, Gris, Krohm, Woods of Ypres, October Falls, Dammerfarben, Finsterforst, Blaze of Sorrow, Häive, Vspolokh, Folkvang, Wyrd, Empyrium, Temnozor, Secoding Haive, Khors, YGG, Falls of Rauros, Zuriaake, Borkr, Dråpsnatt, Peste Noire, Windir, Austere, Sólstafir, Falloch, In the Woods..., Gallowbraid, SIG:AR:TYR, Order of Apophis, Sichelstein, Nyktgia, Sühnopfer, Svarti loghin

Hello everyone. I've recently been getting into a lot of folk-influenced black metal, such as Drudkh, Agalloch, Moonsorrow and Primordial. I'm looking for some black/folk metal with a really depressive edge/sound, such as that of the aforementioned artists. I know I listen Moonsorrow, but I usually am a fan of more raw instrumentation and am not too much into synthesized instruments. The depressive part is the most important thing, so if you can think of an artist without a real folk edge but you think I'd like them, feel free to post. However, don't post straight DSBM (Silencer, Xasthur, etc.), I'm looking for at least a little bit of an atmospheric sound.
I know I sound like a nitpicky asshole in this post, but if you can think of any other artists that would fit into this category, it would be greatly appreciated. I will post all the recommendations at the top of this thread. Thanks!

If you are open to post black, I would recommend fen, wodensthrone, alcest, les discrets, and lantlos. Some of these bands have a moderate folk or neofolk influence.

Very depressive black (but not so much folk) metal bands are coldworld, gris, krohm. Heavy use of atmosphere.

Finally, people either love them or hate them, but I can onestly say that woods of ypres' "the green album" includes some of the most wrist opening songs I've ever heard.

Definitely seconding Les Discrets. One of my all-time favorite bands. I'd say their first album is the Folkier one. And maybe October Falls? I'm not too familier with DSBM, so I'm not sure where the boundary line lies between that and dark atmospheric BM. I also can't help but mention Dammerfarben, they're not really depressive but they're like if you took out the Post-rock and Dark Ambient from Agalloch and upped the folkiness.

If you like Moonsorrow then the latest album by Finsterforst is a must (check out the previous album to). Also check out Blaze of Sorrow's 'Echi', I had a thread about it a while ago, excellent release. I would not class them as depressive as such but they do give off that sad vibe if you know what I mean.

Check out Häive, esp. Mieli Maassa:

You will probably like Raate, esp. the first album Sielu Linna, and the Demo as well.

Vspolokh and Folkvang are pretty dark. Both of them have kind of a Drudkh-ish sound. I especially recommend Vspolokh for sad folk-influenced black metal.

I don't like when people throw around depressive term regarding any band that doesn't sound upbeat, I'd rather just tag stuff as sad or melancholic, for me depressive is much stronger term. What might fit your request is Wyrd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLa0ZaMrNTc), Empyrium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNePpeoF7N4), maybe Temnozor sometimes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG9vWEou2w0). Secoding Haive as well.

Ukraine has a couple of other worthy mentions in Khors and YGG. Falls of Rauros is also worth checking out. And a couple of Chinese bands, Zuriaake and Borkr. The latter is pretty much straight up Drudkh worship.

Sounds like you need some Peste Noire in your life. Really demented stuff. I've always put it in this category. Basically medival folk/black metal. Neige from Alcest plays bass and drums on the first albums, too.

Also, give Windir a listen. Really solid Viking/Folk/Black Metal. Not as depressive, but it should be right up your alley.

Last but not least, Austere from Austrailia. This reminds me a lot of Agalloch, and has the same atmosphere as they do. I really enjoy them.

SIG:AR:TYR. Atmospheric/epic viking metal. Bit of Bathory, Agalloch and Primordial all in one. http://sigartyr.bandcamp.com/track/godsaga

Not Depressive, but check out Order of Apophis. Some of the few pagan black metal I actually tolerate.

Sichelstein is a one-man depressive project out of Prague, I think. You can find them on last.fm

Nyktgia is by far my favorite depressive band of all time.

It's really hard to recommend something, because folk tends to denote 'cheerful' and 'uplifting' more often than not.

A band that does come to mind is Sühnopfer. The folk influences are very scarce, and the band is more melancholic than depressive (lyrics deal with mediaeval history mostly) in concept, but they may just strike the mood you're looking for, especially in songs such as this:

Peste Noire, especially based on their more recent efforts, couldn't be farther from the "depressive" label, though. They're always a great recommendation, but I'm just saying it might not be exactly what TC is looking for.

And Neige only plays bass/drums on the demos. 8)

I would recommend Tardigrada and their demo Wirdstand (2012). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofeEsJ2qvRk
It's more atmospheric/melancholic BM but I think that people who enjoy depressive BM will find something here too.
I am not sure if the tape and cd are still available but I can recommend this. I wonder how their upcoming material will be.

If you´re into Falls of Rauros and Woods of Ypres you may try/have tried something on the Agalloch and Nest style, though there´s not much of BM, they surely cover the depressive folk side.

Also, there´s this band, Hypothermia, merely depressive black metal, personally I didn´t enjoy them as much as I thought I would but you should give it a try.
