...Just picked up an Ampeg SS-150 for about $100.

It kills, without much effort or fucking around with it at all, at least for rhythms. I was just pumping out shit for a few hours and didn't even notice it had been so long, since it sounded so good. We'll play with this and a GX130C. Just trying to figure out how I'm going to pick one out to do lead shit, really. Our old lead player crapped out on us and now I'm the one who has to provide the gear (I'm bass)...and I've not quite got the ear for this stuff anymore.

Any ideas?

I use my Ampeg ss150 for leads as well.

Anyway great choice, sound great, built like a horse. Can't recommend them any higher if I could. Actually trying to secure 2 more from a friend in chicago that doesn't like them for some retarded reason.

I keep hearing those amps sound good. I'll have to check one out one day.

They are practically the same amp. usually the 140c have a chorus channel or used to be part of combo amps but they sound and act exactly like the 150's

I know I have 4 150's and 2 140's or maybe 3 of each.

Any recommendations to get the most out of this amp for leads?

Our rhythm dude plays a crate gx130c, if that's any help.

I don't do anything more than switch my guitar's toggle switch to lead. I'm not much of a lead player so I don't have a huge exp in doing solos.

I hear about these Ampeg's all the time, but I've wondered: Are they good for like old school metal like Maiden and Priest and stuff, or are they pretty much strictly high gain death metal amps?

Basically, my band plays a mix of Autopsy/Bolt Thrower, Thin Lizzy/speed metal, and thrash. I think it sounds great for what we do.

it's all in how you mess with the settings on the amp, I'm pretty sure it'll do good for Maiden and Priest stuff. I know I've jammed some Priest riffs out on it and it sounded great.

It also makes a great blues amp with the clean channel if you want to even go that route.

I just happen to like throwing out death metal and grind with mine.
