Just curious what the MA users will think of it. It's apparently a band from my original hometown - kind of progressive pop/punk/metal.

The intro sounds a bit djent-like, which, whilst not necessarily metal, is based heavily on metal. However, there is nothing in the rest of the song that sounds metal. I can see why the band have listed themselves as metal (unless it's just to get more views - more categories=more views), because I can hear metal influences in there, but being influenced by something doesn't mean you are that thing. The band sounds quite a lot like Lostprophets, who are often described as post-hardcore, so perhaps that's your answer.

The singer's voice really annoyed the crap out of me, but the guitar wasn't bad. They seem like they have the talent to change direction a bit (and maybe get a new singer) and become something I'd actually want to listen to.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the singing - it seemed to fit the music. If you don't like it, obviously that's fine, but I wouldn't respect them if they changed just to be more metal.

I'm not even saying they need to be more metal, just less annoying. LOL

For that kind of music the guitars was actually ok with me, but not the vocals.
Still not much into weird tempo changes and shit, even tho these guys actually did it better than anything I've heard from crap like Dream Theatre and Symphony X and shit. :)

There's a lot of great progressive metal bands with great tempo changes - Dream Theater doesn't do it for me either. I always think Voivod or Opeth for that.

I like it, but yeah, there's nothing metal about this. Very much a pop-punk band with some decidedly non-metal riffing.

O__O

Far far far from anything metal. That was punk, melodic punk at best.

I think it's unnecessary.
Bits that don't fit together thrown into a song. That's not prog-anything.

Not at all metal. The production is a terrible fit for this music too.

For what it's worth, The song isn't bad for what it is, but it sounds more emo-ish to me. Nothing I would call "metal" anyway.

While this isnt my favorate type of music (far from it actually) I almost kinda liked it. (I said ALMOST.) Like many said, I don't like all the abrupt tempo changes either, but I have that same issue with a lot of metal bands as well. This band- I dunno, I'd call it emo, modern hard rock, "alternative" rock, or any number of labels, but I don't hear anything riff-wise which would scream out, "Metal, dude!" And I half wondered, because of the band name, whether this was some kind of Metallica spin-off, but obviously this band has nothing whatsoever to do with Metallica, musically or otherwise.

I'd agree with some of the earlier posts about classifying this band. I'd call them some combination of pop punk/alt rock/math rock. One could argue other influences as well. They have some distorted guitars, but that doesn't put them in any metal category, even partially.

It's not a bad song; I think it would be better if they ditched the distortion for cleaner tones that would fit this style better.

Deathcore, Metalcore, Post-Hardcore, pop-punk, whatever you want to call it are not using any kind of prog metal sound no matter what people say.
Tempo changes in the guitars. Yeah sure there is tempo changes if you don't count the fact that there is nothing prog about the music. So just have tempo changes and throw in what ever techno sound you can think of and you're prog or better then Symphony X. Yeah ummm no.

That first song did sound like Rush, and their other songs certainly have metal riffs. The vocals are weird though, at times I don't mind, at other times kind of annoy me.

Unfortunate that they have such an awful band name, the last thing I want to think of is a two piece band with two James Hetfield's in it.

I dion't know - that might be pretty cool if they both caught on fire at the end of the show. :D

In their defense, they used to sound more "metal" when they were just instrumental.

Not surprising, since right now they sort of sound like Justin Beiber on speed, or some Pat Boone wannabee.

And you made a "debate whether this is metal" thread? Come on!
