Yeah it's terrible and I'm sure the music is too. Not very surprising really.

As for bands having the name before this site, no doubt it's the case for many, but I recall seeing a Legion or a Nemesis in the queue recently... :|

obscura
spawn of possession [yeah i know]

Obscura is a word of its own, you know?

It means "dark" or "obscure" and is probably most well known from "camera obscura."

There's probably a good chance they still got their name from the album.

In fact, wiki confirms it. Don't see why that would be a problem though.

What should be on the list is all the bands whose name begins with "Black" or "Bestial".

I always thought Nekromantik would be such an awesome band name and the bands that use it are:

Infernal Nekromantik
Nekromantik Curse
Nekromantik Rites

and a band that is called Maniac Disease but also known as Nekromantik but not officially known as.

When I first heard Celtic Frost's Necromantical Screams, I always wanted that name as I'm a massive fan of the band.

As for underused names, one that's surprised me since I stumbled across the word a few years back is 'vorarephilia'. I can scarcely fathom that it hasn't been used by some brutal goregrind band or other by now.

There are four, actually.

Ground Zero, Sudden Death, Inner Sanctum and Silent Scream.

It's just funny because, despite the number of bands who have these names...most of us couldn't actually say we listen to any band with such names.

There are 7 names that I listen or have listened to. It doesn't seem like much, but I remember how long it took to find a band I had even heard of using the random band function (the first time I stopped at 60-ish :( ). The fact that there are ten to thirty of these helps of course, but the ones I listen to are considerably better known than the minor ones of similar name.

I misread "Necrolust" as "Necroslut"... Not really relevant, I was just amazed that there'd be 10 bands with such a dreadful fucking name.
I was a little bummed when I realized it wasn't "SLUT", if only because that's the main reason I logged on.

Necrolust is at least a little better, but still terribly boring.

Pretty sure Katharsis is a legitimate spelling, actually. Probably not a modern spelling, though.

BTW, GUYS, for future reference:
The name "Bitchgrinder General" is taken.

just so you know.

That was pretty interesting. Thanks for compiling this Morrigan.

Nemesis isn't that great of a bandname.

Could be interesting with song names aswell. Fucking hate generic titles like "Burn in Hell" (Venom, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Atomkraft, Twisted Sister) "Judgement Day" (Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, Faithful Breath, Sinner, Jag Panzer, Tank) "Buried Alive" (Death SS, Black Sabbath, Venom, Riot, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Blitzkrieg)

Not only is Nemesis a very unoriginal band name but have you ever realised how much other media is has Nemesis in it?

Star Trek and Resident Evil to name two.

I'm also surprised Pentagram didn't appear in this list, it's a generic very "metal" word, and I know Turkish, Chilean and American ones (The third one is big name, and the two former aren't very obscure either), it turned out there are only 5 bands using that name (or 4, because the Chilean one is now called "Pentagram Chile")

being one of the most infamous example "Thrash Til Death" (Whiplash, Tankard, Destruction, Witchburner,Onslaught,Sauron, etc)

i would make a compilation album with all the cliche names like these, it would be kinda cool i guess

That Battlecrown "Chronicles of Nosgoth" or whatever that was...is that even for real, or is that a joke band? Sort of reminds me of that "Paladins of the Golden Power" joke power metal band from Norway from a few years back. Frickin' awesome (in a "so funny it's awesome") kind of way.

On another note, I wonder how that list would look if you included non-metal bands using those names as well. I was surprised, for example, to see Mayhem did NOT make the list. I know of at least two or three other Mayhem's in existance in the 80s that played either punk rock or glam/hard rock, which would have bumped that name up the list. I would imagine there are probably at least a few punk rock (and possibly electronic or rap?) groups called "Legion" for example, as well, sheesh it's almost scary to think how many bands called that there could be out there.

But as someone said, once the Norwegian Mayhem became well known, the flood of underground bands called "Mayhem" ground to a halt- I suspect that would have happened the same way if, for instance, a 90's Seattle grunge, 80's glam or 2000's nu-metal band had come out calling themselves "Legion."

I'd say don't even bother naming your band from the deities listed in The Satanic Bible, just be wasting your time, haha.

Actually, a name I would've expected to be taken by now (probably many times) is Leatherface, but there's no band on the Archives with that name.

Not a metal band, but there is a pretty well-known and established late-80's Hardcore/"Emo" Leatherface all the same...

The best non-taken names are Schadenfreude and Conquistador, and since I'll never be able to start a band I'm giving you all permission to steal them.

Luckily, I am demented enough to the point where I will immediately dismiss any generic name prior to calling it my own.
