Is there a band who plays symphonic black metal, but more doom oriented than bands like dimmu borgir and carach angren?

Check out Ancient Sorrow to see if that fits the bill, start with the debut.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P5maN-aDRBg

Maybe even Elysian Blaze, especially his latest album which is quite a journey, though they would not be labelled as symphonic the keyboards play a prominent role.

Hopefully these are something similar to what you are looking for but are more of an atmospheric nature.

Hm, hm. Not to say that I am very familiar with either band's work, but I Shalt Become's latest album, "Poison", may suit your request rather well: http://youtu.be/GvBwuLbgOUc If you enjoyed "The Finest Cut of the Scalpel", go forth and listen to the complete album, it's quite the experience. Be aware, however, that "Poison" is I Shalt Become's only album to incoporate typical traits of symphonic black metal in this particular manner.

I'm looking for some black metal with folk instruments, songs like Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times, Minas Morgul - Opus D - Am Hollentore, and stuff like Summoning uses but I'm not looking for something that atmospheric. Also, are there any bands that use the viking style clean vocals in Gorgoroth - Profetens Apenbaring?

The upcoming album is in the same style.

Looking for some more sorrowful melodic black metal in the vein of old Dimmu, Vinterland, old Naglfar etc...

Give Kawir's latest album (Isotheos) a try. Not only is it arguably the best black metal album of 2012, but with scarce yet well-dosed use of folk instruments (kanonaki, flutes) and chants, it might be what you're looking for.

Ever listen to Far Beyond Folkemon? Melodic black metal from Germany whos riffs can sound quite sorrowful from time to time, the debut is a great cd and one I often go back to. Not as dark as some of the bands you just mentioned and some of the riffs can come across quite power metalish but give it a try, it is a very solid album.

Haha, its the way you read my post Maltus, I was asking it as a question to the metal archives user Folkemon who was the op. The band name is just Far Beyond and here is a link to his page.

Hi all,
I am looking for some bands with a folkish vibe, good sense of melody and powerful clean vocals (harmonies a big plus) in some parts which provide such great dynamic contrast, like those found on the track "Ukraine" off Nokturnal Mortum's the Voice of Steel. Really loving the majestic folk vibe with those nostalgia inducing melodies!

Another example is the bonus track from Gallowbraids only release.

Much appreciated.

Folkvang and Wodensthrone They did a split together which I haven't heard but both bands have great albums

Wodensthrone are fantastic! Folkvang are good, but they don't fit what I am looking for in this case.

To Stormm : I'm digging Finterforst, but I wish they went into some more explosive parts rather than a mostly mid-paced tempo. Good use of silence and space in their sound though. Definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Thanks again.

Any black metal bands sound like Incantation(us)? Not like Archgoat, but rather super dense and forboding but with actual riffs, not just blasphemy buzzsaw clones.

Demoncy's awesome... didn't think about that one, makes sense.

Cruciamentum's pretty good, but it's not black metal (like you said). Maybe I'm asking for the impossible. Thanks though.

So is there a band that sounds like black metal with Brann Dailor-style drumming? Not the whole way through the songs though. I mean transitions with oddly timed fills. Like if Branns drumming somehow led up to really fast blast beats that dominate the rest of the song. The key though, is the odd timing and fills.

Sorrowseed is kinda like that.

https://www.facebook.com/sorrowseed666
http://www.reverbnation.com/sorrowseed

The music currently up on the pages is entirely first album stuff, which is gothic melodoom with a blackened tinge to it, occasionally getting a bit more extreme. The new album, which I drummed on might I add, is a lot more oriented towards the black metal side of things, although the doom element is still there at times. It won't be out until probably the summer, but there are a couple songs being prepped for release within the next month or two.

Glad you like them Dooders, I think it is a great release. On the subject of your request I might just have found something very underground that might be just what you are looking for, but you will have to wait until I get the album to see if it is as good as what people say. I will get back to you as I have already tracked the cd down....

There are indeed, I got Storm and Isengard when they were released along time ago and fucking hated them to be honest only for them to grow on me over time. There are many bands using this style in their music now but these guys were amongst the first if not the first, Fenriz was experimenting with styles and genres from the early days.

Yeah, Demoncy is awesome! I normally cant stand most of these "war metal" bands becuase they sound like random noise! But Demoncy is great in keeping the dark occult sounding death metal mixed with black metal!

I´ve asked this in a seperate topic (here) but maybe i get more response here.

I'm looking for black metal (doesnt have to be pure BM) with tenor(like) vocals. Like Gorgoroth - Antichrist, Gorgoroth - Satan Prometheus, Anaal Nathrakh - A Methaphor of the Dead.

Thanks in advance!

Aaah, Kawir. Excellent band. To Cavirs remains one of my favorite BM albums. I didn't know that they had a new album. So, thanks for the mention

Come to think of it Dooders Kroda's "Schwarzpfad" may be something you also may enjoy. He does use some clean vocals (not to often!) but the rest of it should suit your tastes man, give it a try, great album all the same as with the rest of the Kroda albums.

For some reason I didn't even consider Kroda and "Cry To Me, River..." used to be one of my favorite black metal albums a few years back. Kroda are right up the alley of what I am looking for.
I havn't listened to anything else by them so it will be interesting to see how they have evolved. I wonder if he still uses that strange synthesized bass tone he did on Cry...

Thanks for the tips, although i don't find any tenor(like) vocals on the songs i've tried. Do you have specific songs or albums i should look at?

I was wondering if any seasoned metal heads would be willing to give me some recommendations? I'm not a new comer to metal but I still feel like there are some good bands that I am missing and would like to add to my collection. I'm looking for black metal that is on the more experimental side, with use of instruments or riffing that is uncommon in black metal.

Black or death metal bands who are avant-garde, symphonic, folky, or mildly atmospheric? Industrial recommendations are also welcome as long as it is tasteful.

These are some bands that i enjoy...I will gladly take for any recommendations of bands you think i might have not heard about.

Axis of perdition - Oranssi Pazuzu - Sear Bliss - Deathspell Omega - Dodsengel -
Den Saakaldte - Blut aus Nord - in Lingua Mortua - a Forest of Stars - Todtgelichter - Deviser

Nathrzeim - Morgul - The Bishop of Hexen - Mirrorthrone
Love Lies Bleeding- Vehementer Nos

Hellveto - Dragobrath - Belenos - Drudkh - Bornholm - Negura bunget
Frostseele - Mondstille - Saille

The Monolith Deathcult - Gloria Morti - Sammath Naur - Ulcerate

Aborym - Pavillon Rouge
Dodheimsgard - I.D. Vison

Please and thank you! \m/

I'm really new to black metal.
I'm familiar with Darkthrone, Mayhem, and I know most of the more popular American black metal bands too.

I'm not into symphonic stuff at all.

What would you guys recommend as like absolute must-listens?

Hey, I don't want to toot my own horn too much, but I think this falls right in place. My blog has a couple of mixtapes highlighting black metal from different parts of the world. I've been a bit lazy about it recently, but I did one for Norway which focused on the bands that don't get the recognition that the bands you listed (darkthrone, mayhem) do. Also tackled Germany, France, Canada, and the Netherlands if you are so inclined.

Check my Norway one out

Beyond those, I think it's near essential to check out Bathory (blood fire death, Under the sign...) Celtic Frost's emperor's return, and some newer bands like Deathspell Omega, Ash Borer, and Horna

As well as the bands on my mixtape, here's the rest of the "must listen tos" from Norway

Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi, Isa
Gorgoroth - Pentagram, Under the Sign
Emperor - Emperor, Nightside Eclipse
Zyklon-B - Blood Must Be Shed
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Taake - Over Björgvin Gråter Himmerik
Immortal - Pure Holocaust, Battles in the North

Then non Norwegian

Havohej -Dethrone the Son of God
Arckanum - Kostogher
Absu - Tara
Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom
Celestia - Apparitia - Sumptuous Spectre
Mütiilation - Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul
Marduk - Heaven Shall Burn
Shinning - V - Halmstad
Armagedda -Only True Believers

I disagree with all of those suggestions.

Check out Luror or something.

I highly reccommend you check out Thy Catafalque. Awesome band that draws influences from various other genres, start with the last three albums, all fantastic in their own way.

Im sure you are aware of them though I did not see them on your list, so maybe later Sigh? Maybe you would also enjoy Golden Dawn's debut, "The Art of Dying", solid release with some experimental pieces here and there.
