I'm not entirely sure if the purpose of this thread allows for Melodic Death metal, but here goes anyway;

My knowledge of Melodic Death Metal is fairly limited, so I would like some recommendations as to some that may fit my taste. I'm a big fan of bands like Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Gormathon, Wintersun and Dethklok. The general qualities I love in these are the catchy riffs, the vocals that really project themselves and feel very powerful, as well as them being clear enough to understand what they are saying.

I'm also a fan of bands that crossover Melodic Death Metal with other subgenres, particularly Power and Folk Metal. Perfect examples of this would be Children of Bodom, Amaranthe, Whispered and Eluveitie. Does anyone know any good bands like these? Thanks in advance .

If the lyrics that could be regarded as racistic do not turn your off, you could give Arghoslent a whirl. Melodic death metal with balls, which always reminds me of Iron Maiden, for some reason. Here's a piece from their latest lp:

I was going to jocosely ask if you wanted some Swedish DM but I then realized that I've never actually listened to that band/album. However I'd blindly point out towards Carnage. Everyone should love fucking Carnage! :nods:

I am looking for the heaviest most disgustingly brutal death metal bands on Earth. I am not too well versed in the genre but I want something with a lot of aggression and most importantly lots and lots and lots and a ton of (as well as a lot of) GROOVE that upon hearing will result in involuntary headbanging.

The following are songs where a brutal groove in the vein of what I'm looking for is time stamped.

Vader- any album
Aeon- The newest, but any could do
Suffocation- Pierced From Within is my personal favorite
Cannibal Corpse- probably obvious....Heaviest to me is Tomb of the Mutilated, catchiest- The Bleeding, best of the newer stuff- Torture.
Monstrosity- Spiritual Apocalypse

Was just about to recommend this! Katalepsy totally made a brutal death metal masterpiece! I primarily listen to black metal. But their last album has gotten me excited to hear quality death metal again!

So I've long been a vocal melodeath critic, poking fun at it with nearly every opportunity that presents itself. I've always split melodeath with melodic death metal (In Flames is the former, Vehemence is the latter), and generally found myself disliking everything in the former category and liking most of what I'd heard in the latter.

Recently, I've been forced to admit that there are actually two camps in what I dub "melodeath", and one of them is very, very good. I maintain that shit like At the Gates and Disarmonia Mundi can fuck right off, but over the months I've really warmed up to both Insomnium and Be'lakor. You know, the style that's less about catchiness and/or just playing Iron Maiden melodies with growly vocals, and instead goes for a much more downtrodden sound, with a paradoxically grand atmosphere and the feeling that the music is about something far greater than itself. You know, like the feeling I get when listening to Since the Day it All Came Down and Of Breath and Bone is that "life is horrible and depressing so you should probably kill yourself, but don't feel bad about it because death is beautiful and peaceful", and I'd really like to hear some more of that. The handy dandy similar artist tab on those two bands' pages tells me I should listen to Omnium Gatherum, so I'll get on that, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask you handsome fellers for some recs while I was at it.

Insomnium can be rather entertaining indeed. Their live shows can be extremely immersive and atmospheric. They're quite typical melodeath riffing wise, but the guitar leads, subtle synth use and brilliant compositions set them apart. Be'lakor I didn't like in the slightest though. I guess it's a Finnish thing.

Mike, I suggest you look into Noumena if you aren't familiar. They're quite similar to Insomnium, similar atmosphere, melodies, although not as much emphasis on the dramatic sadguy aspect. Infernal Gates' From The Mist of the Dark Waters and Garden of Shadows are worth checking out too.

For something on the more doomy side, maybe try Hanging Garden's debut, Daylight Dies' debut or Slumber. Saturnus is also another good one from that realm, and maybe for something a bit different from sadguy lyrical themes, try Visceral Evisceration

Also, from what I've gathered, Omnium Gatherum seem to be a pretty love-hate band. I'd start with the debut or their last two releases. (Dr. Dreja hates these guys, so there's your incentive to check them out). ;)

EDIT: Whoops, meant Dismantling Devotion by Daylight Dies, but nonetheless the debut is decent.

Whatever you do, ONLY listen to Dismantling Devotion by Daylight Dies. It's a tremendous album but for some unknown reason they began sucking pretty hard afterwards.

I like the same thing. Nothing as heavy to me as brutal groove. I'm having a tough time finding an album with more than a song or two like that though.
Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague is probably too obvious, but has a few groovy cuts. Other than that, the closest I've come in the death genre is Misery Index - Heirs to Thievery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFsRMuFOXHw and Dawn of Demise - Hate Takes Its Form http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmqSCd7kIik

The first album is quite brilliant, I definitely recommend it. Nothing after that is really worthwhile, however; the sophomore is a dull, less interesting version of the first album's style with less melodic riffs, the third is plain boring and the fourth is accessible melodeath with a couple of interesting moments but nothing particularly captivating. I haven't heard the newest.

BastardHead, have you heard Intestine Baalism?

Whether or not you'd care, the first Disarmonia Mundi album is actually damn good. Great prog tendencies mixed with the rougher (but still streamlined) melodic death that doesn't follow gothenburg stylings. Closer to a band like In Mourning. It's the only Disarmonia album that I really enjoy.

Once they devolved into chorus-fueled melodeath I gave up.

Thanks for all the tips, guys! I'll get to them when I get to them, which could be whenever, I tend to jump around with my musical moods.

And yeah, I've heard Intestine Baalism but I don't remember them striking me very much.

I can definitely understand it not striking you, although I think the first album is quite brilliant. There's an interesting dichotomy of melodic beauty and Swedish styled utterly dismal death metal (some Carcass in it, too, doubtless). It's something like Anata in that there's the brilliant melodic lead guitar, but the majority of riffs are quite blunt and aggressive. The following two albums are more melodeathy, but the first album also has a couple of moments like that.

So, stupid question, but I'm curious: what is the difference between deathcore and slam death? From listening to a bit of both, the only thing I can really pick apart is slam death is still in the death metal template, but with more hardcore grooves, where as deathcore is generally all grooves and breakdowns. I don't listen to either much, so that's why I ask. I discovered the new Katalepsy record and thought it was amazing and ridiculously groovy, and I know people were tossing around the slam death tag, so it got me thinking.

It may seem simple but slam grooves mostly focus on slams, which are those ultra chunky, generally down picked palm muted power chords you hear, oftentimes accentuated pinch harmonics. A lot of slam bands fall on the technical brutal death metal side of the coin. What you need to do is listen to Cepholatripsy, a pure slam band, then listen to Despised Icon, wigger desthcore. The answer should then become abundantly clear.

Slam is simplified brutal death metal, whereas deathcore, surprisingly, draws from hardcore. Apparently some deathcore bands play slam parts, aswell.

MalignantThrone can probably provide a detailed explanation of their differences as he's very much into both genres as far as I remember.

Have we reached a point where we can't just blanket all deathcore bands are garbage? I know a couple of years ago, that was definitely the general sentiment. I'm curious if the tide has turned, or if the genre is mostly still churning out garbage. I started listening to the new Winds Of Plague record. I think it's pretty neat.

I remember jokingly sampling some Winds of Plague, and I was entirely convinced that it was actually a parody.

These guys are my entrance into deathcore, and I know a lot of people will probably protest that choice, but I never stop at one band. I do like what I'm hearing, mostly because it's new in terms of style (to my ears).

I'm looking for brutal death technical death metal that has grinding riffs and really heavy bass, kind of like defeated sanity, the only brutal death metal band that seems to fit that description.

I don't like melody, I would like to be drowned' in brutal sounds. Slow / bass heavy parts are okay.

maybe i'll elaborate a bit to hopefully encourage recommendations, I don't listen to nearly as much melodic death metal as I do old school or brutal so I don't know enormous amounts of bands from the genre. Aside from the aforementioned i enjoy Kalmah, Blind Stare, Dissection, Dark Tranquility, Gates of Ishtar, Skyfire, Blood Stain Child... I'm looking for bands that incorporate a good deal of excellent clean vocals into their songs, while still integrating harsh vocals. A melancholy atmosphere is preferable to me, and should there be black or power metal influence it wouldn't deter me at all! Specifically though I'm really just trying to find more melodic death metal bands that have good clean vocalists, so anything good that meets that criteria would be welcome!

You guys should listen to Obscure Infinity's Putrefying Illusions. I'm listening to this for the first time and I'm already hooked. The vocals remind me of Necrophobic's debut. I think the general style can be best described as Swedish death metal. It also helps that the production sounds dirty enough to add something to the music. There are a few useless interludes on the album but besides those its all killer song followed by killer song.

Can anyone recommend me an album in similar style to that of Effigy of the Forgotten from Suffocation (or a band with similar playing style)? as in low tuned guitars, great drumming, Brutality still emphasized but technical nonetheless. Dying Fetus, Decapitated and Defeated Sanity I already know and am familiar with them, what else is out there? I dont know any album out there that quite matches Effigy (in my opinion)....

whats the general consensus on Morpheus Descends?

Thanks

I'm looking for melodic death metal with clean/harsh vocals, like;

Scar Symmetry - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7byR1HgSqA0

etc! Thanks :)

maybe i'll elaborate a bit to hopefully encourage recommendations, I don't listen to nearly as much melodic death metal as I do old school or brutal so I don't know enormous amounts of bands from the genre.

Beheaded does the trick for me. Ominous Bloodline is what I started with.

Assuming you already know Disgorge (US)?

There's not much out there that can match with Effigy but plenty of bands aspire to it. Also second the Beheaded suggestion.
