Hi!

I'm looking for bands that somewhat sound like (I'm referring to very specific parts):
- Janvs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFbLFZB0O9c @beginning)
- Alcest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiFVhu3EG88 @0:27)
- Spite Extreme Wing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e8X_lAil_U @beginning)... although to a lesser extent
- Peste Noire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA25vs4c2vs @07:40~ @10:08)

I really have no idea why I put these particular bands in the same basket... I'm no musician, hence my rather lacking musical jargon.
Some specific traits:
- black metal or rooted in black metal
- guitars: rhythm guitar --> somewhat droning; lead guitar --> rather high pitched compared to the rythm guitar and less distorted, sometimes "ethereal" (one could say shoegazy...)
- strong melodic approach without resorting to keyboards
- solos. Lots of solos (I know it isn't always the case with the examples I gave you, nor it should be a mandatory criterion). To my ears it seems that even in the main "riffs" single notes are more prevalent than chords...
- somewhat eclectic: they often draw inspiration from other genres... shoegaze, prog rock, etc.

I would not put Visceral Evisceration in the same basket, but I do think that their melodic approach is similar (somewhat constant "soloing", etc.).

I'm sorry if this is both specific and vague...

Thank you :)

Though I can't promise guitar solos, you might try Moss of Moonlight (http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Moss_of_Moonlight/Seed/338612).

Also, Amesoeurs (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Amesoeurs/46747) and Old Silver Key (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Old_Silver_Key/3540331225) are doing stuff very much similar in style/approach to Alcest.

Mystic Forest?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhTzcM5GHGU
their song "O Belle Maudite" hooked me immediately (starts out with insane drums and a soloing style) ... no idea why it's not on YouTube.

Mgla? (much less obviously melodic, but has the general sound of some of what you linked)

Might be a little far-fecthed, specially since they use plenty of keyboards, but try Fanisk

Krallice sounds like exactly what you're looking for, although I would have assumed you've already heard them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBeJO6rZX9A

Along similar lines is Yellow Eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz3zHgGjIJw

And actually...you might even like Liturgy. Just don't ever read an interview with them or look at pictures of them. It's harder to like them after that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2iwAAaEZvE

Hi!

Thank you very much for your recommendations!

- Moss of moonlight: some weird instruments (bonus points for that) and I find them interesting. But their sense of melody (in the solos) is more regular rock than the stuff I mentioned (I only listened to a couple of songs though).
- Amesoeurs: I already knew them and really like their album!
- Old Silver key: never heard of 'em. I liked what I heard though! Very Alcest-y indeed. Their guitar sound is a bit weak, though.
- Mystic Forest: I liked what I heard, thank you (disliked "ô belle maudite", really liked "la dame verte"). Mighty shitty tinny/fuzzy production though!
- Mgla: I like the less "obviously melodic" stuff ;) and this is pretty good!
- Fanisk: I really disliked the first song but I like the second one (bar the swastika)
- Krallice: I had them on my iPod a while ago... some of their stuff is pretty good, but sometimes their sense of melody (e.g., in the video you gave me) is pretty "wanky" (melody à la Necrophagist)
- Yellow Eyes: seems like an odd mix of Black Lotus and Negura Bunget! Still, pretty dissonant, but interesting.
- Liturgy: quite proggy. you were right about the fact that people shouldn't watch their videos... :P... Reminds me of black metal-infused "animals as leaders", if that makes sense. I'm not too much in a dissonant period, by the way... I enjoy my fair share of deathspell omega, but not right now!

So, thanks again everybody. There are some interesting bands but I don't think there are any that were "spot on" (Mystic Forest's tremolo picked solos were maybe the closest thing)... keep tryin' ;)

I can totally see why you grouped those songs, and I love that style of black metal too. Here are a few songs/bands that scratch that itch for me:

Agmen: Reminds me a lot of Spite Extreme Wing, really cool take on melodic black metal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzISrAUXMkE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1nDAf0GK64

Taake (you probably know them, but just in case!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kInGfEztgoo

Heimdalls Wacht: Maybe a stretch, more towards the pagan metal side, but really great melodies. Check it out at around 1:14

Agmen: I really like the two songs you gave me!
Taake: they really fit what I asked for (well, that song). I already knew the band, but maybe I haven't paid too much attention to their stuff. So, thanks a lot!
Heimdalls Wacht: I don't really like his screeches (is he choking on something? I'll still take this over Nazgul [ita] any day... *choo choo*)... but I really like the music!

If you know any other band, feel free to post them all...

Note: I just discovered these by clicking on random links on youtube:
- Angantyr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOyhNRJqIAo, it has only a few elements of what I'm looking for (i.e., one of the two guitars should be cleaner, etc.)
- Frostseele - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay9Sd_iOp58, some parts fit my description well
- Gallowbraid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XVATLAuYWU, holy crap! (would have been even better if some of the solos were tremolo picked...)

(I'll come back with more if I find anything)

I've been really enjoying Cormorant lately, to me they seem to straddle black/prog much the way Janvs does:
http://cormorant.bandcamp.com/ - Funambulist and Junta are my faves.

Not trying to spam, but my band has all those traits, I think. Check this out first and if you like it, try the rest of the album:
