I'm looking for some bands similar to atheist that mixed jazz and metal. I asked a friend of mine if he knew any, and he showed me 2 bands, but it wasn't really what I was looking for; and I can't for the life of me remember who they were.

Any recommendations would be nice. they don't really need to sound like atheist or anything, just have a "jazzy" feel to them.
Thanks.

You might dig this. The jazz influences are a lot more subtle though.

Is Cynic too obvious? Also Gordian Knot and Aghora, which are side-projects from Cynic members. And I second Exivious as well.

Well, Trepalium was pretty good, it seemed to be just a bit to much though (not really sure how to explain it) but I still like it.

Cynic was good too, the vocals weren't really my thing, but the music itself was great.

Absence of the Sacred was really good, the jazz influence was a bit subtle but I can still hear it. the vocals were also more my style.

Exivious was definitely what I had in mind, perfect example of what I was thinking.

I couldn't get the video of believer to work, I wrote them down though, I'll try again later.

shining was pretty good, a little bit too much, like Trepalium though.

But thanks, everyone for showing me these bands.
Any other suggestions would be awesome.

WAYD, was also really good.

Cynic progressive metal/jazz metal

Naked City jazz grind (John Zorn is a genius I recommend checking his other projects too)

Exivious Progressive, technical metal/jazz metal (They are working on their second album right now)

Gorod Jazzy Tech death (anything from leading vision onwards)

Free Nelson Mandoomjazz (he only has a few tracks but will be releasing an EP real soon)

Pestilence (Spheres is a old jazz death/thrash classic)

Not exactly metal, but Sonny Sharrock used lots of distortion on his guitar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYwhQSP77jY&feature=related

You might also want to check out the first Condition Red album. Progressive metal, the second album is not more jazzy than the average prog metal, but the first album is really weird, jazzy keyboards with double bass drumming, it's really cool when you get into it though, not really avant garde but very jazzy metal. Sorry for posting a cdbaby page, I don't know where else you can listen to this: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/conditionred2

Heavens Gate is wonderful speed/power metal, with some jazz elements. Start with Livin' In Hysteria, as I think that's their best album. Planet E and Menergy also has jazzy elements; I personally find them boring, but you might have a different view.

Farmakon has some jazz/funk elements. Personally, I can't stand it, but I suppose it's possible you might like it.

Some songs by Leprous might be appropriate here. More prog than jazzy perhaps, but sometimes the drumming and keyboards wander into jazz territory. Oh, and later Ephel Duath too.

I shall refer, once again, to Chris Poland's Return to Metalopolis album, which has always been what I consider to be thee album which manages to combine standard heavy metal with jazz.

Wow, I didn't think this thread would get this many recommendations.
I'm gonna check all these guys out.

I also found one band myself called Afflicted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0fx08BD7_c).
Anyone looking into this type of music might wanna check that out.

Thanks everyone for giving these recommendations.
