Well, I got both Nocturnal Poisoning and Funeral of Being, and neither one has disappointed me, so the latter is what I would buy if I were you. Speaking of DSBM, first and foremost check out the milestones of the genre, namely Bethlehem and Silencer. Then bands like Shining, Strid and, say, Gris.

Also, check out Finnish band Inferi. More reminiscent of Burzum's work than Xasthur's, but it's DSBM and a one-man band, so it fits the bill.

I also liked Anhedonia's Der Schrei der Natur album, you could give it a try. (Hmm, looks like it's a one-man band too, not that it matters.)

And don't forget to try Forgotten Woods. I especially like their Sjel av Natten EP.

Anyone know of any black metal bands with members who went to music school and understand music theory?

I'm not sure who recommended Calvarium to me, might have been Ilwhyan, but The Skull Of Golgotha is an awesome album.

I assume you already know early Manes? They were obviously a huge influence on Xasthur.

As far as Xasthur is concerned, in terms of full quality, I'm a big fan of Subliminal Genocide, To Violate The Oblivious, and Suicide in Dark Serenity

If you haven't heard Leviathan's Tenth Sublevel of Suicide, The split with Sapathuran (or stand alone release of his side, The Blind Wound) or Tentacles of Whorror are his best work, my personal favorite being The Blind Wound as the songs are amazing, the production is great, and he uses a real drum kit.

Does anyone know some dissonant black/thrash similar to Blizzard Beasts Immortal (perhaps with slightly better production)? Or Immortal Worship in general?

Hi, I'm asking about a cover art I saw years ago: it's black and white, the style it's pretty old, like medieval drawings but much more accurate, it depicts the figure of a man-like monster emerging from the fog and (maybe) there are something like two children in front of that watching over it. Anybody knows from what album that was took?

The question is kinda offending, though in a funny way.

I'm pretty sure Valfar from Windir had a good theoretical grasp on compositions. Windir's songs are rumoured to have neoclassical influence. Not sure if he went to a music school though.

I've been indulging myself in the German/Austrian black metal scene of late. Anyone have any good acts from those parts of the world I haven't discovered yet?

I already know of Lunar Aurora, Nagelfar, The Ruins of Beverast, Dornenreich, Abigor, Summoning and Nargaroth.

My favorite German acts make up this post I did awhile back (there's a mixtape to download too with tracks from each one).

http://perpetualstrifemusic.blogspot.co ... iness.html

Bands include Nyktalgia, Coldworld, Wigrid, Klage, Dark Tribe and others. Those are some great ones worth looking into.

Endstille - Easily one of the most popular acts. Some good riffs, but not overly exciting.

Todtgelichter - somewhat experimental black metal. It's hard to describe concisely, but their music ranges from fragile beauty to dissonance and anxiety. I haven't heard their latest album; I recommend starting with Was Bleibt...

Wolfsmond - it's rather standard black metal with some melodic riffing and such, but in the same sense as Gorgoroth - melodic riffs without the cheesecake.

Kermania - Like many other German bands, this one is more centered on atmosphere than aggression and hatred. Instrospective black metal.

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult - Standard, aggressive black metal. Wholly competent, if quite uninnovative. Generally high production levels.

Graupel - Quite experimental for "raw black metal".

Aaskereia - Folkish black metal with tasteful use of acoustic guitar, but annoying howled vocals.

Absurd - Their early stuff is some of the rawest black metal. I don't like it particularly, and I like their later polished turds even less.

For some unorthodox Black metal, check out Kathaaria (Ger), Nocte Obducta, Odem Arcarum (Specifixally, Outrageous Reverie Above the Erosion of Barren Earth)

Also, Infestus (Austria) is a fairly good black metal band in a plaintive, dark and atmospheric style. I've actually only heard the Ex | Ist (the latest) album, which was recommended to me when I was looking for albums with high-fidelity unartificial drum production.

This has been bothering me for a while so I figured I'd ask here, does anybody still have Rainfall's Autumn One demo or the files of it? I've forgotten what it sounded like and I'm very curious.

Yeah, you're right about that. I find it amazing their stuff can get so much recognition here though, out of all the black metal acts. They're mediocre at best, and the drumming is seriously a pain in the neck. If you don't like constant blast beats up your ass, I'd recommend staying away from that band.

Indeed, there are far better bands like Malus that rarely receive the attention they deserve.

My favorite Xasthur releases are the previously mentioned nocturnal poisening, a gate through bloodstained mirrors, suicide in dark serenity and subliminal genocide.

As droneriot stated early Manes specificly there three demos collected on one disc called Svarte Skoger (mandatory for any fan of black metal in my opinion) and there debut full length Under ein blodraud maane. Manes black metal era to me is essential esp if you are a fan of xasthur.

As far as one man blackmetal bands.
I dont recall seeing any of these mentioned but are worth checking out:

Judas Iscariot: album to check out: heaven in flames. BUt all his full lengths i own and enjoy esp distant in solitary night. Judas Iscariot played a very burzum + darkthrone influenced brand of black metal. so hate it, but if you like black metal i cant really see not enjoying judas iscariot.

Krieg: album to check out: Destruction Ritual. this album is just a beast of almost white noise harsh hatefull black metal. Cant recomend checking this album enough. seek it out.

Mutiilation: album to check out Remains of a dead ruined cursed soul or Vampire of Black Imperial Blood. very raw sorrowful black metal.
