Wondering if anybody could recommend some nice, epic, heavily symphonic/orchestrated metal in the vain of Rhapsody of Fire (and Luca Turilli's other projects). Any recommendations would be gladly appreciated!

Not power metal, but rather progressive metal, the band Pain Of Salvation released an album called "BE" that blended an orchestra with prog. metal. It's also an incredibly elaborate concept album.

My specialty!

After Forever
Intense and epic, just
like you asked for.

Later Blind Guardian
While more well-known for
their straight-up speed/power
metal of the early-to-mid 90s,
Blind Guardian know their way
around an orchestra.

Dark Moor
Quality power metal with unique
female vocals.

Edenbridge
One of the great standouts in
the symphonic metal world.

Epica
You probably know about these
guys already. Big, bombastic,and epic.

Kamelot
See above.

Leaves' Eyes
For your ethereal and moody
symphonic metal with a Celtic
touch needs.

Stratovarius
These guys pretty much
foundedthe genre.

Wildpath
These guys used to be awesome.
You'll see why when you click.

Within Temptation
I'm a huge fan of these guys, and
when they want to make an
intense, epic song, they deliver in spades.

Age of Artemis
These guys do the whole "symphonic
power metal" thing with a bit of a proggy flair.

Amberian Dawn
More in the vein of symphonic
pop-gothic metal, but they do some great stuff.

Ancient Bards
Pretty much Rhapsody of Fire with
a female vocalist. And 10x the bombast.

Angra
See Age of Artemis above. Same
guy's responsible for both.

AnsoticcA
Symphonic gothic metal with thick,
heavy guitars and thick, heavy
symphonics. Love this album.

Avantasia
When Avantasia wants to be big and
epic, they're goddamn fucking big and epic. Holy shit.

Dawn of Destiny
Oh man, these guys know how to make
a goddamn intense, goddamn catchy
tune. Fantastic female vocals.

Delain
Poppy gothic metal with some great
orchestrations. One of my favorites
in the pop-gothic metal genre.

Diabulus in Musica
Similar to AnsoticcA, but not quite
as thick. Still freaking awesome for fans of the genre.

Dragonland
Another titan of the genre, these
guys can craft an intense and complex
song like no one else.

Dreamtale
Not much to say. It's Euro-power
metal, it's got symphonic elements,
and it's awesome.

Excalion
See above.

HolyHell
Apparently their record's crackin' down,
because few of their songs are available,
but still, pretty epic symphonic metal with
some great female vocals.

Keldian
A very solid power metal act, but this
song in particular is exactly the sort of
thing you ordered.

Krypteria
These guys are highly inconsistent. When
they do good, it's really good, and this
is one of those times!

Nightwish
I'm going to just assume you've crossed
paths already, so here's a reminder.

Orphaned Land
A bit different from the usual, but I
figured you'd appreciate it, anyway.

ReinXeed
These guys are often too light for even
me, but when they hit home (like here),
I can't resist for even a second.

Serenity
Solid Euro-power metal, great
symphonics, one hell of an album.

Sunrise
This is the only song I dig from the album,
but you may enjoy the others. This is a
fucking phenomenal track, though.

The Slow Death
Not symphonic, but shut up and listen.

Theocracy
These guys don't always add symphonic
elements to their songs, but when they do, HOLY SHIT.

Timeless Miracle
A heavy contender for my favorite
album of all time. Fantastic stuff.

Virgin Black
Dark, heavy, bleak, and symphonic, too!

Xandria
Big, bombastic, heavy, and highly operatic.
Perfect for your request.

Oh yeah, there's also Diablo Swing Orchestra. Pretty wacky band, but you might like them.

These guys aren't Rhapsody of Fire-like, but perhaps you'd appreciate them. Aquilus are orchestrated as in, full-on classical orchestra, sometimes mixed with black metal and others times pure classical. Griseus is spectacular. Can't recommend highly enough.

I know about 2/3 of the bands in that list Zelkiro, will give the rest a listen. And I need to second Delain and After forever as they are amazing.

In the wave of more modern releases, there's...

Septic Flesh - Communion
Septic Flesh - The Great Mass (Has a live orchestra)
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Wintersun - Time I

I really prefer symphonics like Septic Flesh, they're definitely a leading thing, but they don't drown out the "metal" perse.

Carach Angren: Symphonic Black, not sure if that's what you search.

It could be more like Celesty's album Vendetta, or even the last two albums from Alpthraum (highly orchestrated)
