I'm a pretty big Joe Lamont fan (got exposed to it in the 80s on the awesome movie Return of the Living Dead II, which is also how i got into Leatherwolf!), but i havent heard this track. Fuck i love rad 80s action/horror films with legit metal and AOR soundtracks <3

Fuck yeah, '80s and '90s action and '70s and '80s horror kicks ass! Though the ones from the '80s have the best soundtracks (well, '90s still has Hans Zimmer and Jerry Goldsmith, but not much "regular" songs that kick ass)...Too bad it got replaced with that wannabe-tough-guy post-grunge/-core/ nu metal crap later on...

Anyway, DRD, have you heard Magnum? One of the greatest AOR bands ever IMHO, they debuted back in the late '70s, and were more in a melodic prog/pomp vein, then went into a more AOR-ish direction later on, reaching their peak in the mid '80s...They toned down the prog elements after that, though, so their late '80s/early '90s stuff is a bit less interesting, although there are still some gems to be found there.

EDIT: Speaking of '80s movies...Gotta post this classic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhsTmiK7Q2M
The singer later joined the hi-tech AOR band Device with Holly Knight, I think...

Could anybody point me towards bands/artists playing some kind of cheese-filled, uplifting (very important, so no love ballad songs please) "AOR-meets-80s-pop-rock" stuff. You know all this positive "keep on" stuff, often found in (mostly action) movies of the 80s etc.

Another one from a great movie I watched last night:

Glad this thread popped up again. Just riding another AOR wave at the moment. Cranking heaps of old classics on my ipod all day at work. Any other Glory fans here? Fuck they shred. Danger in the Game is such a solid AOR/melodic heavy metal album. So many classics. Bombastic choruses, huge hooks, great vocals. Guitars are like George Lynch at times with the band sounding like DOkken/Europe; it's totally boss. I'm sure most of y'all here wil already be fans, but just incase:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTXOL8ArwsA

otherwise I'm listening to a lot of old ones, just revisiting stuff. Havent made any new discoveries. Stan Bush & Barrage, Toto, Alien, FM etc.

DRD & Fred - both songs were great for my taste and I didn't knew those before. Sweet!

Here are some artists/bands I discovered lately and I think haven't posted here:

Dan Lucas "The Fire" (maybe this I did already post?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxufkiS5keU

The Ladder "Time Soldier" - magnificient chorus, the whole album is a blast btw...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecjp6TFbVMg

Haywire - very poppy stuff, yes - but infectious somehow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ioyfd7FJxW4

Emerson, Lake & Powell "Touch and Go" - synths? yes, synths and more synths! :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oYKa2KVguI

Outside Edge

Well the ASIA, KANSAS type of prog rock/AOR isn't necessarily the style that people in here are looking for. Within AOR there are bands that stray far from what i call the 70s "first wave American" soft rock/AOR style. Personally i prefer the late 80s American melodic rock/AOR and the Euro (Alien/Europe/GLory) styles.

Anyways, been listening to Mark Free's debt album and really digging it. In addition to Giant, Grand Prix, Haywire, The Ladder, Joe Lynne Turner, and some others we have discussed in this thread. The Mark Free album is killer. Shouldn't have avided it for this long.

It depends which Asia you are talking about. The UK one was boring commercial prog. The US Asia, which came earlier and supposedly had their career ended because the other Asia had more money and sued them, is much more interesting musically: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnn0mwt0-hs&feature=relmfu

I also had never learned of the term before and have a question: is there any AOR that wouldn't also fall under the category of 'hard rock'? And, is it basically rock that would get played on the radio? Like rock top-40? (did a little wiki reading, but trying to summarize)

Probably something like Toto or Fleetwood Mac. It's actually a radio format, where they play other cuts from the albums besides the hits and also long songs, sometimes even whole albums with no break (or possibly in the middle to flip it over if vinyl).

I think it's not a popular format right now.

I'd say some stuff like Santers or Kenny Loggins maybe falls under this category. Coney Hatch too?

Anyways, i'm about to try find some new bands to get into. Anyone got any good recent discoveries?

Actually, Kansas went in a more AOR-ish direction in the '80s. The stuff they did in those days was mostly of the softer, poppier '80s variety (think Journey's Raised on Radio and Foreigner's Inside Information, with touches of prog here and there).

I started to listening to Heart's 1970s stuff, it's quite good. Nancy Wilson is a great guitarist.

Totally different from their 1980s material.

Nah, but checked the track.
Man, still listening to that Mark Free solo debut record - that shit is on form with Alien's debut, and Glory's Danger in this Game, among other top notch AOR releases. I have his Unruly Child stuff, have had his stuff with King Kobra for ages, and have just today downloaded his second solo effort, which is killer - a bit ballsier than his first. I know Mark goes by Marcie now and should be referred to as such, but man, holy hell, what a killer vocalist. So talented. The commanding vocals and insanely huge choruses in the debut are epic.

regarding Mark/Marcie Free - somehow I never tried out his solo works despite "Never Say Die (Iron Eagle)" being one of my alltime fave tracks. Which of his solo/other band works is most comparable with that song? As usual when it comes to "my" AOR I am more fond of mid or uptempo stuff and less ballad-like songs...

Yeah i know the track from King Kobra.

Well the second album, which i'm only recently familiar with, is pretty upbeat, slightly heavier sorta stuff, but I LOVE his first album which has plenty of pretty uplifting, catchy, hook laden numbers drenched in huuuuge choruses. Such as:
'The Last Time' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey1RcH1hkeg
'Never be a Next Time' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMzaRld6Xjg&noredirect=1
'Stranger Among Us' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM8Q7t1JMHI

Subject matter is very romantically focused, but those tracks remain at a steady pace, and rock pretty hard with huge choruses, and Mark's powerful vocals. Check out either the second solo album, or some of the stuff with Unruly Child, if those tracks aren't quite to your tastes. Fuck i LOVE Mark Free! Seriously, the lyrics are fantastic. When he writes loves songs, I personally can connect with a lot of the lyrics, they don't feel just cliched or forced, like so many of the lesser heavy metal ballads/glam bands, or shoddy AOR bands of the period. The vocals are stellar, like Joey Tempest or Don Dokken calibre.

thanks, DRD. Will check out that solo stuff. Before reading your post I also took a listen to the stuff Mark/Marcie did with Signal. Sounds also highly promising:

Yeah i got that Signal album years ago, and haven't listened to it in forever. I wasn't really even aware it was Mark Free in it, so i might revisit it now.

just discovered an album which came out this summer and which might suit others in this thread - The NightFlight Orchestra. It's a band featuring Soilwork and SPiritual Beggars members playing classic rock a la Styx, REO SPeedwagon, Foreigner etc. Quite good stuff, very laid back and just "classic" sounding. :)

a few weeks ago stumbled upon Sweet Crystal. Quite good stuff. My fave song isn't on youtube
but this one is very close to it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GoUqETPMt0

(I often wonder why many AOR/Hard Rock bands playing the specific style I like have christian lyrics)

aaaah yes. Sweet Crystal. A friend of mine introduced me to them sometime last year. I remember them being christian, but having a good style in that 'hi-tech' sub variety.

Mothafuckin' Pavlov's Dog, mah nigga... assuming they aren't too progy or "theatrical" for you (get ready for vocals even femmier than Geddy Lee's):

Pampered Menial (full album)
At The Sound Of The Bell (full album)
Third (full album)

I had never heard of them until I found a copy of ATSOTB in a local thrift store and bought it for the interesting cover. I really like this band a lot, but it's no joke when I say I thought their singer was woman for a good chunk of the first song the first time I spun it.

Third wasn't an official release, and it sounds a bit rough/lo-fi (for all I know, someone could've dubbed the masters to a cassette to copy it). It was officially released under a different name around '07 I think, and while it sounds "better", the tape seems to have some grating drop-outs and stuff due to age and improper storage. Probably has some of my favorite PV songs, though. They also shed more and more of their over-the-top, art fag-y grandiosity/"pretentiousness" with each album.

TBH, a lot of the music listed in the first few posts comes dangerously close to butt-rockin' buttrock for butts to rock to in by book (meaning: idon'tlikeit), but Cheap Trick kinda rules. Fuck haters.

IDK... anyone say BOC yet? I guess they could fit here... Sort of midway between PV's poofiness and bands like Foghat's manufactured "cool", except actually good/actually cool.
