FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Alfonso Perez

How can I start here? First off, FETUS STENCH is a Swedish band. That right there should be a huge hint. And they play Death Metal. Still don't get it? Well, imagine a sound based on the NWOSDM, but faster and more aggressive. It does have a mix of both, the old and new styles. A relentless attack of sharp riffing, intense drumming, pounding bass and mid-ranged vocal grunting. Also, the constant shifting of rhythm patterns requires you to really pay attention to everything that is happening. Execution wise, these guys know how to play their instruments, since the recording is totally flawless. The production just adds to it, since everything is clear, defined and well heard in the mix. Fear not, the rawness of Death Metal is still there. The guitar and bass tones are thick and heavy. Maybe the drums are a little sterile when it comes to the sound, but aren't all post-2000 drums alike? Now, FETUS STENCH is not bringing anything new to the genre. Sometimes their songs get a little carried away. They need to add more memorable riffs such as the ones found in 'Bashed, Defaced And Disfigured', my fave track off this album. They do have the attitude and the strength to be reckoned as a new force in the, in my humble opinion, already crowded Swedish scene. So, I do think that if they keep working as good as they've had, they should develop their own sound and character. So far, this is an impressive debut. Just take in count that being from Sweden and having all those classic bands and albums in their musical background, FETUS STENCH needs to keep pushing their own boundaries. If they can top "Stillbirth", they will get their rightful place in the Death Metal scene. But, alas, checking them out is mandatory! Go ahead and support them here: http://www.facebook.com/fetusstench, http://www.officialabyssrecords.com

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Jaime Pérez

Indianapolis' Death Thrashers RADIATION SICKNESS have been making music since the late 80s. They have split up in 1990 after releasing: 2 EP, 2 demos, and 2 splits. In 2010 the band reunited and have finally issued out some new material in the form of “Reflections Of A Psychotic Past”. The album consists of 7 brand new tracks and 12 tracks from their “The Other Me” EP. I will focus the review on the 7 new tracks as these are the latest material. Let's start by stating the obvious, it has been over 20 years since these guys released an album. In taking a long hiatus one of two things will happen: either the music will be awesome or the music will be crap. With that said, I think RADIATION SICKNESS really made a good attempt at a comeback but fell a bit short in a few areas. The first was in the production of the bass drums. The kicks are barely audible and get easily bulldozed over by the guitars. The guitars themselves are produced well, the riffs are catchy for the most part, but as a song progressed it just seemed that the musical foundation had a few cracks. Now on to the good points about this album. Interesting time signatures throughout the album were a nice change in pace and provided a quick impression of what one was in for. The vocals sounded like a generic version of Martin Van Drunen (which isn't bad and actually provided some depth to the tracks). The overall drums were great. Plenty of fills and a thunderous sound (sans the kicks) that really provided a good thrashy sound. The guitar work on 'Tripping On The Seas Of Madness' really makes the track stand out. Fast paced and doomy at times, the song is one that really had me from the get-go. The majority of the songs range in the 1-3 mins in length which is great and gets the music straight to the point. The album is a solid piece of musicianship with a few weaknesses. Considering these guys took such a long break and did a good job one can easily overlook the minor flaws. So let's do the math, you get 19 total tracks at just over 37 minutes of old school Death Thrash. Take this album for a spin and check it out for yourself. HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by Extreme Metal Factory

Image

By Val.

A great reality of Italian death metal: Humangles!
Active from 1996, but edit just from 2007 with the ep "Refoetalize" which brings us, through the other ep "Edge of beyond" (2008), to the full-length "Fractal" (2010).
A great sample of an impact death metal album with no compromises.
In 2012 they realize the excellent "Odd ethics", an old school blow right in the face!
Since from the first notes it releases an uncontrollable heat of headbanging.
Just to have an idea of the energy the listener can feel, think of the skull bashes under a stage!
To brass tacks, talk about the package to come to the music.
Great introduction with the cover: brief, monochrome, but with an heavy force (if something is simple it doesn't mean it's ordinary!).
The cover reflect the sense of the entire album that we're going to listen to!
All the artwork is great, trim, and lyrics, info and logo show up through an excellent mix between dark images and colours.

Let's talk about the songs!

Needles of the Blind-
starts with a narrated words which bring us in a very intelligent lyrics, not hackneyed and without genre's common stereotypes.
Then starts the music with an old death metal school riff, a violent headbanging with rises and falls as in old German school of Thrash (like Destruction/Sodom) or like old American glories (like Baphomet and Banished).
We've got Swinging rhythms between the verses since the apex at the end of the song.
In the chorused we can find both a very powerful and straight growl (without effects and frills) and a scratched scream (like the one in the 80's Thrash!).

Skinned, to Feel All
In the second song can find a perfect mix between the different genres mentioned before and a Doom\Hard Rock mood which reminds 70's band (and Cathedral too).
This mix made everything really original and groovy.
This song is both very rhythmical and old school.
We've got drum's rolls which bring us to a guitar insert that sounds as an attack!
This song is very listenable and will stay in your head for a long time!
It's very well balanced through speed stop & go!

Smells Acrid
The third song starts with a sound which remind us old Cannibal Corpse (Eaten Back to Life over all!), and the first second are like a foretoken of a frontal assault that pervade the entire album.
The slowdowns and the accelerated riffs are the trade mark of this song, which go forcefully 'till the end with an evil growl that brings down in hell, and with a cutting scream which frames evil guitar's parts that wound you!
The final guitar's riff brings us in Tampa (like Deicide of the namesake album).
A great scream!

Deny Your Creed
A great start for this song, a melodic part but in Thrash\Death style, that brings to the following one as an anteroom to the most absolutely and terrifying dark.
In this song we can find a whipping drum, great riffs, a powerful growl and scream that go together whit no mercy; as always with that mood as an old band accustomed to a no-stop sound of violence.
There are also great stop & go that framed the central verse.
In the final part the song because more 70's but always in a Thrash\Death style with a great conclusion just in their style!

Finally I just can say that's a great work!
The different songs are varied, refined in very old school style which goes from American Death Metal to most evil German Thrash (both, of course, in old school style!!!\m/).
A very well-respected platter that mix the "taste" of old Death concert (with skull bashes on the barriers) and Thrash parts (with rivers of beer in the name of Rock's god!).
A great acclaim to the lyrics too, because they're never hackneyed and they're able to reflect the social distress in these dark and shitty times (they're not ordinary, as I told before!) but always being bloody and violent as the genre command!
Also the sound and the mixing (...gently made by Dan Swan in Unisound Studios!!!) balanced in a very great way all the different parts which come from different influences.
In my opinion this Ep is just a foretoken of a new devastating full!!
After a listening like this you just can grind the jaws and prepare the auricles for a new wave of violence!
I can guess that in live shows these guys must be amazing, because with such a sound you can feel a river of adrenaline!
Nothing more to ay except for: put on your studded armbands and horns up!!!
Have a violent and powerful listening with Humangled!!! \m/

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.crossfire-metal.de

Image

By Daniel Müller

Why I am not surprised that Corrosive Carcass come from Sweden? The typical tapping guitar sound and the fast drums recall after a split second of old heroes like Dismember, Entombed / Nihilist, Nirvana 2002 or Grave. And actually, you have to write to do no more. Everyone knows what these bands sound. And everyone who is on it, you can purchase "Composition Of Flesh" blind. It is the debut of a band that was founded in 2004, but it took only a demo, which was released in 2010, and all seven of the songs are also included here. There are also six new ones that fit seamlessly into the tracklist. The record sounds like a uniform. The songs convince completely. And fat production also fits perfectly. The album cover is also nice muted black and white and shows a demon drawn, as in days of old Swedish. Very, very cool! Schwedentodfans should strike in any case!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by musicstage

Image

By Christopher Holmstrom

The most exciting Gardnerz The new EP is to find out if they manage to keep the same high standard as the debut album, The System of Nature. After listening through It All Fades, I think you can not really come up to the high standard that it was in his debut, but it comes very close. It's a good album and I think it cements their position as one of Sweden's most exciting death / doom acts. The disc is straight through nicely made, heavy with a low, brutal pace and with a variation that makes it all the time is captivating.

The opening song, Dont Look Back, is in my opinion the best plate, it is wonderfully varied without ever losing the thread, they get really confused mixture of doom and death in a brilliant way. The song's heavy riffs and beautiful melodies together with Niclas Ankarbranths awfully good and heavy growl makes it actually quite stunning, one of my favorite songs right now.

It is followed by the slower and heavier A Horrible Disease which is a good continuation of the successful stick with the same concept as the previous song without being too similar. It is also based on the really good riffs, good growl and tight drums of Vedran Benčić. What really strikes me is that The Gardnerz manages to do so very stylish transitions between the different parts of the song, even though it contains very large variations so drained never fluency when transported back and forth between heavy riffs, beautiful melodies, and the unadorned brutality.

Although I really am a bit allergic to cover songs, I have to say that the band manage to make a gruesomely good version of Dark Thrones Tran Silva Nian Hunger, the biggest reason for this is probably that the arrangement is so different from the original. Paulina Strihavkas voice is simply stunning and fits wonderfully together with the atmosphere and the slightly melancholic melodies. However, I think that the song feels a bit like filler, in such a short disc so I would rather hear The Gardnerz run full all the way. The song would probably be better suited to a full-length album, and then been a more welcome feature.

Then we again thrown into heavy death / doom, it's time for the title track, It All Fades. I really can not help but enjoy the Wilhelm Lindh amazing riffs and Francisco Martín heavy basslines. This is an unbelievably good song that has a great balance between the instruments and the vocals, where everything has its place without any dominating. Growlen continues to be stable and the interactions that become with Paulina Strihavkas languorous voice is wonderful. The only thing I can feel is that I miss a bit more variety through the track.

After the title track, it feels like the listener get a decent dose of classic doom, flirting with death metal decreases and this is really low tempo, heavy and brutal. The interplay between the music and growlen feels crazy stable and they get it together in a nice way.

Conclusion on the plate, Erasing bad specimen, connects sac in an excellent manner, the brutal and heavy riffs continue to feed the listener while Ankarbranths singing is first-rate. The melodies keeps me on edge through the whole song and you can never relax. Here we also really great variety without becoming cluttered and hard.

In summary, one can say that it is a crazy good album, perhaps one of the year's best, that keeps me on my toes throughout. It is an album full of variety that has a good mix of doom and death, it never gets boring but it is never too much, but the various bits and the tracks blend together incredibly well. I am impressed by how well they manage to combine the different elements of vocals, growls, heavy riffs and melodious tunes. The fantastic drums and the brilliant muffled base connects music and success is a fact. It is simply a really good album that should not be missed.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by metalitalia

Image

By Claudio Luciani

The Humangled are from the province of Pisa and do nothing but give us further confirmation of how the Italian extreme metal scene is well in health, releasing an EP of all respect as "Odd Ethics", after the debut album - "Fractal" - 2 years ago. Their music pays no attention to particular frills or niceties, but stepping on a straight tip punches in the head, succeeding more than discreetly pieces and rhythmic rock, compressed sounds and designed to make you scapocciare, as well as to please the most "sick" of you thanks to the atmosphere is constantly being degraded. The band, active from the late nineties (the demo "Anatomic Butchery" dates back to 1997!), Shows all its experience in songwriting that - even direct - is nice, mature and effective thanks to a nice taste to the riff, old-school and "fat" to the point of peeping in different genres, such as the opening of "Skinned, to Feel All" (perhaps the most fun, let us say that the title is brilliant) which are obvious hints of sludge that may , with a little 'of transport, call the Obituary southern-oriented. Elsewhere you can feel some stems instead thrash and certainly do matter to the goodness of the sound and the relevance of the stop, never out of place (and, we would add, also aimed at "squaring" of the platter). The bitterness of such a work is always the same: a few pieces, which is why we hope a new release of their long distance in time at least reasonable.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.metalhead.it

Image

By Alberto Vitale

I always thought that the revival of genres and sounds is often encouraged by some good album that jumps out of the general chaos of the pot of turno.La Abyss Records is a label that bases its strategies towards the death metal matrix old style, which publishes Corrosive Carcass, a band from Sweden taken in adoption. Two conditions that they set up an album, "Composition of Flesh", in which the Swedish death metal than once (particularly severe and extreme and grim Dismember) meets up with some ideas of American death metal. In this clash-meeting current runs between notes a strong sense of personality from the band. The Corrosive Carcass process obviously sounds loud, as if they were produced from the depths of a cave. A battery stormy, but overly compressed sound, and a low damn dense and well audible. Jonathan Sjöblom is the black bard singing of atrocities, crimes and corruptions of the mind. The use of the blast beat is continuous, but the Corrosive Carcass not want to aggravate and then inserts here in mid-tempo, braking starts. Atmosphere in which face each riff generated by the memory of Death and Autopsy and those compatriots who were appointed more about. Although a publication entirely derivative, because of the kind, style presents their ideas and able to make this work, something that can stand out from the rest.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by http://www.metal-rules.com

Image

By Carlos Llanas

Thrash metal is considered to be some of the fastest, meanest, and aggressive styles of metal out there. Its sole purpose is to wreck your fucking neck. That is exactly what Entrench managed to do with the release of their debut album "Inevitable Decay". Coming out of Västerås, Sweden, Entrench is as aggressive and relentless as the thrash gods of old. Many of the newer thrash bands sound too generic and weak, yet Entrench manages to keep the same level of ferocity the likes of Kreator circa "Pleasure to Kill" and Slayer's "Show no Mercy".

The album is an eight track thrashfest from start to finish. Songs like "As Dawn Breaks" and "Doubt What's Left" are chaotic tracks that have reverb filled aggressive vocals and speedy riffs with lots of fast picking. I even heard some Sodom and Possessed influences in these songs. Another cool thing about this album is that the songs are lengthy and very rarely does it sound repetitive. The creepiness of some of the riffs really set the mood right before it kicks you in the face with speed; it's a great mixture.

The album cover isn't an intricate piece of art or anything, but it flows and it looks like it belongs with the record. It gives off a very "old school" feeling; Back to the day when many bands just didn't have the money or means to have a masterpiece for an album cover. Entrench kept it true with this one. It's a town in ruins with a fire in the middle of it and no trace of life anywhere; "Inevitable Decay" indeed.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to this album. It took me back to a time when thrash was real. It's fast, it's loud, it's mean, and it fucking rules. It isn't anything new or anything that hasn't been done before, but Entrench does it very well. It is a very good buy for fans of Kreator/Sodom/Possessed style of thrash. I hope these guys stick around for a long time.

FETUS STENCH (Sweden) "Stillbirth" CD review by Powerplay Magazine

Image

By Martin Harris

During the review period for this issue of the magazine, Abyss records took it upon themselves to have a release schedule of six albums over six weeks, one of which is the debut from yet another death metal band from Sweden. I suspect that if Swedish death metal bands got together there could be a deathly political party running for election if they chose to. With the Swedeath style being overly subscribed currently, Fetus Stench (what is it with bands and their obsession of doing or talking about ghastly things with babies?) have decided to go for more brutal US style battery. The production style is modernistic but packing a thunderous wallop on the opener "Meat Grinder Flesh Obliteration", and Vader speed is prevalent on "Stillborn Son". The riffs are excellent and for a change I've not heard most of them before on other albums, as on "The Outer Island", which has a pulverising beat and does what death metal is suppose to do: drench you in violence, infect you with blistering riffs and bulldoze you with a crushing drum sound. There's frenzied riffing on "Bashed, Defaced And Disfigured" and a blurring blastfest on "Descending Into The Realm of the Dead" which has Dying Fetus touches, especially on the groove sections. Spectacularly sadistic on all festering fronts.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) "Tyrants and Men" DIGI CD review by http://www.eternal-terror.com

Image

By Matt Coe

Alaska may be one of the last places in the world you would think a melodic death metal band would reside, but for guitarist/vocalist Hiram Lohr, this is where he calls home. Recruiting session musicians to fill out his musical visions with bassist Kellen and drummer Fredrik Widigs, “Tyrants And Men” as a debut 10 song full length has a lot more in common with the European movement than anything remotely North American.

Hiram’s vocals are a blend of the deep bellows from below along with blackened sandpaper-ish screams - which will surely bring to mind artists like Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy, and Dissection on songs like “No Gods, No Masters” and the slower militant marching “Warriors Of Defiance”. The riffing and soloing carries the bulk of the melody enhancement for the group, often with those striking speed note picking notations that can be a tad folk-like during the slower sections. The bulk of “One Final Breath” gives Fredrik the ability to move from super blasting double bass to more controllable drum motions that will certainly induce head banging and air drumming maneuvers. There’s even a hint of thrash mastery in “Open Casket” as the main stair step guitar parts recall “Over The Wall” from Testament if played at double speed.

Lyrically tackling a good versus evil perspective, and often evoking historical/ mythological topics to flesh out the thoughts such as in one of the stronger tracks “Spartacus”, Thousand Year War can develop this niche to keep themselves away from the conventional gore/death material that’s been prevalent in this scene. Overall “Tyrants And Men” gets the job done if you are a melodic death metal fan- as long as you understand there isn’t a clean vocal passage in clear ear shot.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by Powerplay Magazine

Image

By Martin Harris

The Abyss roster is chock full of high quality extreme metal acts, and Sweden's Corrosive Carcass can proudly state they're up there with the best of them. We all know the score with Swedeath, but with this wave now carrying plenty of hangers on, bands need to stand out, and CC do this by using a higher pitch guitar sound, but still infested with massive distortion. There is a genuine gnarled putridity about songs like "Self Mutilation" and "Chainsaw Dissection" with old school Venom bass annihilation being used to maximum effect. Much of the bass work is swamped with a grind onslaught technique, ensuring that the album is slightly different to the norm and making riffs on "Butchershop" and "Necrotizing Fasciitis" that much more brutal and slaying. There is little else to add about CC's brand of Swedeath carnage; it does what you expect and it feels like it should without you thinking you'd rather have played a Grave or Dismember album instead. Top notch aural thuggery.

HUMANGLED (Italy) "Odd Ethics" CD EP review by Terrorizer Magazine

Image

By John Mincemoyer

One assumes that 'Odd Ethics' provides a stop-gap until a Humangled full-length appears. Until then, listeners must make do with this interesting Dan Swanö-recorded EP. Mr. Swanö certainly knows a thing or two about unconventional, and there is plenty of that and more on display throughout 'Odd Ethics's four tracks. After the short intro, 'Needles of the Blind' begins and it does not take long to realise that Humangled are not your ordinary 'blast and hack' death metal act. Belending slow to mid- paced death metal, progressive leanings and a dash of death 'n' roll, Humangled's loose, ever-shifting sound keeps the listener guessing which can be good or bad depending on your proclivities.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by Terrorizer Magazine

Image

By John Mincemoyer

Eight years after their inception and a further three since the release of their lone demo, 'Rot.In.Pieces', this Swedeath troupe finally give us their debut full-length. And guess what? It's a sumptuously fetid release worthy of salivation. Whilst their progress has been slow, during that time Corrosive Carcass have obviously been stalking darkened, mist-shrouded graveyards by lantern light, digging up the deceased and absconding with the rotted remains. Ghoulish and arcane, this is old school death metal done right. Dismember and Entombed provide the most obvious influences, but Corrosive Carcass eschew mere mimicry to create an engaging release that is a welcome, and thoroughly fetid surprise.

DISEIM (Latvia) "Holy Wrath" CD review by Extermonia Zine (Argentina)

Image

By Carlos Renda

The truth is that there are no limits when it comes to hearing new bands and new material. One does not imagine in many cases the origins of a particular grouping. For this case we have to Diseim, a quartet in 2007 that has its basis in Latvia, a good example for my lines written anteriormenete. This is his first album containing 8 tracks that combine doom, sludge and death metal riffs with good, simple and natural rhythms of drums and guttural vocals quite correct. The sound is direct without many additional effects and serves to give some atmosphere between creepy and pride achieved by good melodies from the guitars soar. Sometimes with some winks, more than anything in the fast parts, approach a similar style to Autopsy of their first albums. Good choice to head next to the speaker.

This review was originally written in Spanish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in Spanish can be seen below.

ETERNAL HELCARAXE (Ireland) "Against All Odds" CD review by Extermonia Zine

Image

By Carlos Renda

Eternal Helcaraxe Ireland began in 2003 and so far have released a demo. "Palest Kingdom" (2008), an EP called "To Whatever End" (2010) and this debut album at hand entitled "Against All Odds" published in this 2012. It's really nice to get this type of material which means neither more nor less than the first LP of the band, a cover letter that has to work whether or to attract the attention of someone who has a chance to hear them. Undoubtedly Eternal Helcaraxe fuciono at first hearing for me and convinced me with its 8 Notable tracks Epic Black Metal atmospheres laden crude. As the album progresses up the expectations and the truth is that it brings epic enjoy listening does sound as flawless and well lorgrado that combines great melodies with strongest aspects of black metal, blast beats, half-times and riffs murderers. An impressive debut album that captures and came to raze thus presents its wake. Courtesy of Abyss Records.

This review was originally written in Spanish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in Spanish can be seen below.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by Extermonia Zine

Image

By Carlos Renda

Septekh is a band coming from the bowels of Stockholm, and considering what has influenced this area in the extreme metal, I prepare to hear the brand new EP from these people who kindly reach me through Abyss Records. Raised in 2008, learned early on to consolidate its style in a death / thrash metal raw, angry and dirty a big push and pace. There are six issues that this cd contains adrenaline and executed with great forcefulness at once. The drums sounds direct, even without many additional effects, guitar riff and much rough and squeaky voices. Truly feel much power in this Ep, is external and in turn leading to rock much sometimes the melody into a path inspired by Lemmy and company.

This review was originally written in Spanish and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in Spanish can be seen below.

RADIATION SICKNESS (U.S.) "Reflections of a Psychotic Past" CD review by http://www.avenoctum.com

Image

By Martin Harris

Abyss records seem to be churning out countless top quality albums with a veritable feast of talent amongst them. One of the more discerning releases amongst them is this from Radiation Sickness originally formed in 1987 during the crossover scene in the States at the time, which I will mention later. The band released a fair few demos and EPs and one full length called “The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity” included on this release in remastered format. However the band split in 1992 despite carrying on after the tragic suicide of founding member Ryan Rollins in 1989. A reunion performance in 2010 was enough to propel the band back into recording life as we get seven new tunes to kick the album off.

Starting with the title track the new songs are almost pure death metal with a vocal style similar to Martin Van Drunen (Asphyx), the bellowing acid spraying scream lets rip. “Demented Love Song 2” has a sound sample of someone tearing paper or sticky tape before a crunchy double kick. The riffing here does owe more than a nod to the bands old crossover style, short, punchy but ravenously played. Very few signs remain on “Tripping In The Seas Of Madness” the song is a blasted death metal monster with a sharp guitar riff sitting firmly atop of the melody which is plain pulverising. “Graveside” is a short blastfest song before slowing for “The Place Where People Die”, the tune offers some Obituary touches as does the closing new number “Erif Ti Pu” (Up It Fire?).

Now I am given a major quandary when listening to the remastered version of “The Other Me, A Journey into Insanity” that I will go into at the end of the review. People that know me know that I have always thought the crossover scene was a traitorous movement that muddied the thrash and hardcore movements of the 80s. I’m not saying I disliked the bands doing the style I felt that bands were jumping ship for favour of what was popular at the time. At the time of the mid 80s I was heavily into US hardcore like The Accused, D.R.I., Cryptic Slaughter, Minor Threat, Attitude Adjustment but also into crust music as well from Deviated Instinct, Extreme Noise terror, Doom etc. Radiation Sickness fell off my radar for some reason as the band certainly adopted many of the traits of Cryptic Slaughter with short rampaging volleys of hardcore fury mixed with crossover bass lines like D.R.I. Vocally this is manic, powerful material that is inundated with aggression as “Ruthless” showcases the crossover bass lines. “Man Made Insanity” has a merciless hardcore stance, insanely played after the slow start. The snare is blasted like Cryptic Slaughter from the old days or like today’s Coke Bust or Sick Fix for a modern comparison. However the vocals are a lot deeper than hardcore overall. I enjoyed “No Future” with that slow menace start before the blurring bass work and rabidly played almost cacophonous drums. Listen to “Escape To Insanity” and you will immediately think of Suicidal’s “Institutionalized” tune from 1983. As the song develops I couldn’t help note that it was also like another mental hardcore band from Germany called Chronical Diarrhoea which is a band honest. “No Chance Of Hope” is prime time early D.R.I. with the infectious bass lines plucking your eyeballs out.

So back to my quandary and now I’ve listened to the remastered album it is difficult for me to decide which I prefer the most. I like the raw death metal but also the hardcore stuff, and whilst arguably there are elements of hardcore in the bands death metal material I did prefer the older material overall. This is a difficult one to grade so I will edge on the side of positive and see what their next offering brings.

CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) "Composition of Flesh" CD review by http://www.avenoctum.com

Image

By Reverend Darkstanley

Distortion and reverb can be used to hide a multitude of sins or else to turbo-charge the fuel rods of your armoured car ride into the caverns of the underworld. Doom loving death metal crew Corrosive Carcass have finally loomed out of the back waters of demo hell like some filthy demonic killer trying to tear through the fabric of our reality with its plague infected claws.

Gritty and full of surprises, this has taken the best part of a decade to surface and will include tracks, like Corrosive Carcass standard Awesome Nuclear Power, that Swedish death metal aficionados may have come across before. In fact half the tracks are featured on 2010’s self-released 18 minute demo Rot.In.Pieces. Line up changes are to blame for their laboured trek to record label support but whatever else that has done it hasn’t taken away from what is a pretty confident and individual sound. Composition of Flesh undoubtedly owes something to the pervasive Swedish death metal sound but it also tears up its own dark and ominous furrow.

With most tracks blistering through at less than three minutes the first few strikes of this release may have you thinking this is just another Swedeath metal joy ride. But the clues are drip fed with the occasional doomy riff and surprisingly soulful guitar solos. By the second half the sound gradually becomes more expansive and the final five tracks rounds things off by gleefully jumping up and down on the eviscerated products of the first 20 minutes. From the Black Sabbath drop of Collector with its eerie acoustic interlude and the thrash attack of Hunger which comes complete with a killer riff after a couple of minutes – inspired by a band that I am still dredging my poor addled brain to place (answers on a postcard or blood splattered parchment, please).

Then we’re on to the epic finale – a last trudge through the Corrosive Carcass doom death hell, with the emphasis on this last occasion on the doom just in case you we’re beginning to think this was all becoming predictable.

Entombed is an obvious inspiration here but I also found myself thinking of very old school thrash impersonators like Vomitor which I always think have an atmospheric twist bordering on the psychedelic. It’s always tempting to regard this kind of late-in-the-career debut as something that’s been cobbled together, like a ‘best of’ from the past eight years. Too often works like that risk being disjointed as the band rushes to unload their collected ideas into the recording studio. But there is a cohesiveness here that allows Composition of Flesh to escape that trap. This is a venerable recording for a band already well into its career and you can’t help wondering where they might have got to by now if they had got an opportunity as good as this five years ago.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Sergio Fernandez

If your previous and "The System of Nature" augurábamos a bright near-term future of the Swedish band THE GARDNERZ, with their new material as EP entitled "It All Fades", we can certify that your Death / Doom Metal invites to deeper reflections with some progressive touches that will uplift the dynamism so this quartet is characterized Skåne County.

And I say this because in every issue of this EP roads we travel heavy, acoustic and reflective through understated instrumentation on which underpin some issues with variable characteristics. Or what is the same, in the first two cuts such as "Do not Look Back" and "A Horrible Disease", listen ponderous parts, others purely Death metaleras with bass riffs and a not too heavy remarkable speed, and other purely acoustic with soft and melodic guitars that evoke different feelings. To this also help the voices, most times deep and powerful, both as an excellent low audible and present in every second of the EP. THE GARDNERZ also plays with other elements such as a female clean vocals on the title track to the material. We also noticed that as we prize the great version of the classic Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger".

"It All Fades" is a remarkable work of Death / Doom Metal with a dose escalation and melody that confirms this as a combo with its excellent sound and its complex compositions.

Rating: 8/10

BANE (Serbia) "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" DIGI CD review by http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

Image

By Luxi Lahtinen

Amazing... I mean, it's just simply amazing whenever there's a band crossing your path unexpectedly - and blowing your mind away just like that by that very first impression the kind of bands are able to offer you instantly. Such a band is this Serbian melodic and frenzied sounding Black / Death Metal outfit named BANE, that is - quite sincerely said, pretty fuckin' awesome. The band's 2010 9-track debut album, "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" (Abyss Records' digipack version containing of one bonus track, DARK FUNERAL's 'The Dawn No More Rises'), hits a few aces on the table right away. What makes BANE such an utter joy to listen to, they bring back the times when especially some certain Swedish Black / Death Metal bands from such labels as No Fashion Records and Wrong Again Records, started this whole new movement in the underground Metal scene back in the day, by adopting more melodic but still sinister and menacing enough elements into their sounds and albums. Bands like DISSECTION, UNANIMATED, NAGLFAR, DARK FUNERAL and perhaps a couple of more, they can all be found from "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness"; even if only in small portions but still. I would even say that especially the appearance of DISSECTION's old ghost (the "Storm Of The Light's Bane" era in specific) is pretty strongly present on this record, which doesn't work against BANE a bit but more like on the contrary: these Serbian blokes know how to take a full advantage of it - and add some of their own tiny, specific spices into it, to make it all to sound more of their own. "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" has been divided into 3 separate chapters, each of which containing of 3 tracks. Tracks like 'Awakening Of The Evil Spirits', 'Lost Shadows' and 'Dysthymia', are not exactly songs but intros, preludes and outros basically, which I don't really care for that much personally but the remaining 6 songs (or 7 if that DARK FUNERAL cover song can also be counted in) do offer such a pleasing enjoyment in a high caliber, top-notch Black / Death Metal that most likely BANE will get a nice army of loyal followers sooner than they could ever even expect. "Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness" is brilliant - and as I am writing this, there's some more brilliance coming from them soon: BANE's follow-up album, "The Acausal Fire" should be out on Abyss Records any day now, so be sure to get it too. CORROSIVE CARCASS (Sweden) Interview by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

CORROSIVE CARCASS is yet another old school Swedish death metal act that you should lend an ear to. I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. Anders Ekdahl ©2012

How hard is it to find a band name that is death metal?

-Very hard, almost all good names are taken. We even got into trouble with our first name: Abominator, because some Australians already had it.

When you are a death metal band from Sweden is it possible to escape the past?

- You can, but there’s nothing wrong with past influences.

What was it that made you want to play death metal the way you do? What is so great about the style you play?

-It was the energy and the intensity of bands that we listened to that made us want to play death metal. And the style is great because of the same reason

In playing death metal is there a certain aesthetic that you have to follow? What is death metal and what is not?.

-There is a certain aesthetic, but we try to broaden ourselves in that aesthetic in hope of not repeating ourselves

I tried to write lyrics back in the 80s but I couldn’t quite make them interesting. How hard is it to find the right feeling in the stuff you write?.

-It can be quite hard from time to time, but when it flows by itself it’s the best. I’ve (Jon) tried forcing it and it always ends up being shit.

Where do you draw inspiration from? How important is it to not limit oneself to just one source?

-We draw influences from both the Swedish sound (Dismember, Entombed, Nihilist) and the American sound (Death, Autopsy, Morbid Angel), and also the very old thrash/thrashy stuff (Slayer, Possessed). It’s good (and easier) to have many sources if you want to stand out from the crowd.

I tried starting a band in the 80s but I couldn’t find the right people willing to commit. How hard is it to find the right people?

-Sometimes it can be a pain, but you to search through your personal network and if that doesn’t work you have to rely on ads.

Where do you find all the info you need to get the band’s name out there to those interested? Is the social media enough?

-We got our name out by playing gigs, send demos to labels/magazines and by having our band on Myspace/facebook etc. The internet can get your band far, but I think it’s good to use more mediums than just the internet, to make sure you get known to everyone.

How misleading can all the “likes” on Facebook be for your ego thinking that your are bigger than you actually are?

-I think it can be misleading. But we know that you should not take those “likes” so seriously, cause likes are not the same as fans.

What does the future hold for you?

-More gigs and some new releases.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

While it wasn't in of itself a highly impressive album, The Gardnerz' 2011 debut The System of Nature brought a riffier breath of fresh air to the doom/death spectrum, one that needed only some mild refinement to push the band into a more memorable terrain. Enter It All Fades, the Swedes' followup recording, a 36 minute EP which flavors its marginal brutality with a number of eclectic departures that work wonders for its overall presentation. Not only are the group's heavier compositions all the better for the improved structure and guitar progressions, but this also contains one of the most beautiful cover songs I've heard in 30+ years of my conscious awareness of rock and metal music...

Where many of the bands who cross the streams of these two extreme genres depend heavily on slow, dull and bludgeoning rhythms to impart despair, The Gardnerz would rather keep themselves, and their listeners interested in what's happening. Many of the guitars here are, if not complex, quite busy, almost a progressive death metal which recalls sources as wide as Death and Opeth. They'll occasionally evoke some simpler doom harmonies or dense, thuggish chord patterns (as in opener "Don't Look Back"), but it never once gets to the point where you feel tired or exhausted of arbitrary repetition. The vocals are your stock guttural that you'll recognize from a lot of Swedish or Finnish death, but these are joined by more tormented barks and even the use of female guest vocals for an operatic fix. The EP has a clean, but fertile mix which allows you to easily comprehend the guitars, while the rhythm section provides a taut dichotomy of smooth bass and snappy drums. The clean guitars also sound eloquent, and the music they write with them is actually catchy, rather than just placed into the tunes for appearances.

However, what really drew me to this disc is the band's lavish interpretation of Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger", which has been converted into a gorgeous, glimmering and wistful folk track with the lyrics intact, performed by female vocalist Paulina Strihavka, who also adds the operatic lines to the title track. You'd think a transmutation like this would solely rely on its gimmick, but there's nothing at all tasteless, ironic or patronizing about how The Gardnerz translate this beloved, bestial classic. The original chords are wrought out in solemn, river-floes of acoustics, and the contrast of Paulina's voice with the lyrics is strangely effective. It's possibly the best folksy incorporation to an extreme metal album I've heard in quite some time, and though it's not really representative of the Swedes' original compositions, I haven't stopped listening to it since I first experienced it. Otherwise, this is all solid material, more fetching and interesting than on The System of Nature, and I look forward to the inevitable sophomore full-length, crossing my fingers actually that they'll incorporate more of the folk, if you can believe that.

Verdict: Win [7.75/10] (we are not part of the plan)

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by autothrall

Image

By autothrall

The first thing that struck me about The Acausal Fire, much like Bane's prior album Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness, is just how Scandinavian an approach they take to their atmospheric, semi-symphonic brand of deathly black metal. The majestic progressions present in their tremolo bursts are redolent of groups like Dissection, Dark Funeral, Marduk and Lord Belial, the vile dissonance of the eerier minor chords was pretty much the standard in the formative works of Norse and Swedish acts through the 90s and beyond, and they're not the sort to shy away from using higher, cleaner production standards than the primordial swamp of grime and wretchedness that inspired them.

However, despite its obvious level of competence and polish, I didn't take much away from their debut. A decent album, sure, but nothing to write home in blood about when there were hundreds of other, similar options through the prior two decades which had already marked out the territory. The Acausal Fire is a superior use of the band's arsenal in just about every department (save maybe the vocals). The Serbians have made better use of their twisting tremolo progressions, and loads of eloquent dual harmonies that create a necessary contrast against the gruesome dual guttural-rasp vocals. Needless to say, there are effortless blasts coursing beneath the rush of the guitars, and the band lean on the faster side of composition, but The Acausal Fire takes plenty of moments to breathe here, and the riff selections are in general far better than those of the prior album. Symphonic elements used in spots like the 'intro' and 'outro' are lavish, moody, orchestral and engrossing, while the gleaming melodies of tunes like "As Chaos Rises" will instantly settle themselves into your memory without much concentration.

Vocals are quite varied here, with the aforementioned grunts and rasps used throughout most of the metallic sequences, backed by excellent, cleaner choirs or the occasional surge into some salacious snarl not unlike you'd have heard from Ihsahn or Dani Filth in their primes. The mix is incredibly, almost surgically pristine, so those who want a lot of mud, reverb and noise in their black metal will not desire to slop from this trough, but personally I'm a fan of both sides of the coin, and have no problem with either when the music's good. And this music IS pretty damn good. Not perfect, surely not unique in the slightest, but very well executed black metal that furthers the Serbians and songwriters. The inclusion of the cover of Dissection's "Night's Blood" is a fitting bonus, not only because that's a great song, but because Bane knows exactly what to do with it; the Swedes were unmistakably one of this band's most fundamental influences. Apart from being brighter, though, it's hardly an unusual re-interpretation. But it doesn't need to be, because the rest of this album leading up to it is quite spectacular of its own right.

Verdict: Win [8/10]

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "It All Fades" CD EP review by hatredmeanswar2

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

The Gardernz are a band from Sweden that has been featured before in this zine with a musical style that I would describe as being melodic doom/death metal and this is a review of their 2012 album "It All Fades Away" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with not much in the way of fast playing or blast beats, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording.

Rhythm guitars range from to slow to mid paced riffs that combine death with doom metal with a great amount of dark sounding melodies being thrown into the riffing as well as a brief use of soft and clean playing, while the lead guitars when they are utilized are very melodic sounding guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only used briefly they use full chords and finger picking to enhance the darkness that.

Vocals are mostly deep death/doom metal growls with some clean singing being utilized at times as well as a brief use of black metal screams in addition there are some female clean vocals on the cover of Darkthrone's "Transylvanian Hunger" which sounds nothing like the original, while the lyrics cover dark and anti christian themes, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording with the songs being long and epic in length.

In my opinion this is another great recording from The Gardernz and if you where a fan of their previous efforts, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Horrible Disease" and "It All Fades Away". RECOMMENDED BUY.

BANE (Serbia) "The Acausal Fire" DIGI CD review by occultblackmetalzine

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

Bane are a band from Serbia that has been featured before in this zine with a musical style I would describe as being fast and aggressive sounding atmospheric black metal with a death metal edge and this is a review of their 2012 album "The Acausal Fire" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of brutal sounding blast beats being thrown into the music at times, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful tone with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording, as for the synths they are only used on the outro and they bring a dark and atmospheric sound to t he music.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs that capture atmosphere without using synths and keyboards along with a great amount of dark sounding melodies and death metal influences being thrown into the riffing, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding black metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only utilized briefly they use full chords and finger picking to enhance the darkness that is coming out of the music.

Vocals range from deep blackened death metal growls and high pitched black metal screams as well as a brief use of clean singing, while the lyrics cover satanic, occult, dark, violent and hateful themes, as for the production it has a very strong and powerful sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.

In my opinion this is another great recording from Bane and if you are a fan of t heir previous efforts, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The End Of Humanity" "World Of Desolation" and "Nights Blood" which is a Dissection cover. RECOMMENDED BUY.

ERUPTED (Sweden) "In the Grip of Chaos" CD review by http://www.queensofsteel.com

Image

By Tania Giménez

"In The Grip Of Chaos" is the first work of Swedish metallers Death erupted. This disc contains new and old songs of this young band that plays a serious death metal sound with heavy beats and powerful are like hammering in your head.

Songs about four minutes of travel on average, both fast and slow passages, a deep throaty voice, a good range of riffs and some guitar solos to stand out, a bass and drums prominetne effective and constant that sets the pace to follow. Erupted gives you all that covered in a remarkable performance and outstanding production. The ten songs that make up this "In The Grip Of Chaos" will be a live bullets as they have everything to make the audience goes crazy headbanging with infernal rhythms of songs like "Blazing Fall of Heaven" or the passages pasty songs like "Path of Perdition" or "Dark Mistress" that reminds me of some old ENTOMBED.

Erupted start off right with this first CD that will delight old-school bands Swedish.

Rating: 8/10
