I'm looking for well-written melodic death or heavy melodic music that is non-standard but not avant-garde. Some of this will be categorized as "progressive" but some won't be. Lots of time changes, interesting leads and song structures, and lots going on, without being all over the place. Also want an aggressive edge to the music, and it can't be too happy. The heavier and more badass, the better. Harsh vocals preferred but not required.

Examples:
Archons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAes7qIJXII)
Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor
In Mourning

Some bands that play this style like to throw in symphonic elements that give off that "carnival" sound, which I think is fucking ridiculous, so I'm not interested in any of that.

Thanks.

Phantasmagory is an ukranian progressive death metal act with lots of jazzy elements here and there, their second album "Odd Sounds" is amazing so check it out.

Melodeath´s gods Dismember are an obvious choice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB8Tqe5om30

Castrum is another underground ukranian band , but this one is more agressive and melodic than progressive

If you havent listened to Obscura yet, its a good moment to start!
Extremely skilled and agressive death metal in a Chuck Schuldiner/Atheist vein

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mesr2siegRg

Bloodshot Down is an awesome melodic death metal band full of agression and technique
with variety of vocals and non stoping riffing, althought they have a lot of melody
they never put down their agressive side

Hung is progressive melodic death metal.

Symbolic is more melodic than Hung.

Ordinance is prog death. It still has melody, but is more brutal than the previous two.

Eyeless is less aggressive than Ordinance.

This may seem obvious, but check out Opeth if you haven't already. It seems to fit the bill.

I third Obscura, and if you liked that, check out Beyond Creation.

Edit: Actually, I was going to recommend Wretched, but decided against it. I second Wretched.

So you go to a show, and you can't mosh... who cares. Are you there to run into people or to listen to the music? If you want to run into people go to the mall and run through groups of mall goths or something for fun.

I don't even want to post an individual song to inadvertently short sell how good this album is, but in case you don't have spotify, try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YBcX9JcvcQ

Disillusion (from Germany) might interest you. Their first album "Back To Times Of Splendor" may be your thing.

Seconding Neuraxis, but check out their earlier albums first, especially Truth Beyond and Trilateral Progression.
