ENTRENCH (Sweden) Interview by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

This kick ass thrash metal band comes from Sweden, they play old school primitive and raw fast thrash metal, if you're into this style of pure madness give their cd Inevitable Decay a try, it sounds awesome, well here's the interview with the vocals and guitar player Fredrik Pellbrink!

Aquelarre Magazine: Let's start off by getting our readers up to date on what the band have been up to so far?

ENTRENCH: So far we've put out like 4-5 demos and a full length album and been doing some gigs here in Sweden the last few years. We'll hopefully keep the albums coming, for the first time in the bands existence I think we've got a solid line-up where all is heading in the same direction so I feel it's just up to us how creative and productive we can be at the moment, nothing holding us back!

Aquelarre Magazine: Inevitable Decay is a great album, What was the recording process?

ENTRENCH: Thank you very much! We recorded it in our rehearsal room with quite modest equipment during the fall of 2010. It's been awhile now but I can remember that it went pretty smooth, we did record it twice because some things didn't went out as we wanted and everyone wasn't satisfied the first time with tempos, sound, performance etc. But other than that it was just fun and a positive experience to not rehearse or does anything else than just record, mix and listen for a month.

Aquelarre Magazine: When did the band start and tell me about the current line-up?

ENTRENCH: At first we started the band in early 2004 just me and former guitarist Hannes jamming and writing songs together. It wasn't until late 2005 we found our first drummer, Victor, and actually got a line-up that could do something with the material we'd written. The current line-up is me, Fredrik Pellbrink on guitar and vocals, Joel Sundin on bass and our first drummer Victor Holmstrom returned to the band this past summer so we've decided to stay as a three piece since Hannes left after the recording of the album. It works out fine so far and we'll see what happens in the future if we want to bring in another guitarist or not.

Aquelarre Magazine: What are the difficulties and differences between playing live and when you are recording?

ENTRENCH: For me personally, it's more difficult to record! I don't get that adrenaline kick that I need to just sream my lungs out and play with the same intensity in a studio as I get live. That's the hardest part I think. Live you're really prepared to just give it all you got in another sense I feel. Otherwise, live is just fun in a different way. Then it's actually fun to play your own tunes and just go nuts, recording is such a drag after a while but when you hear the results it's all worth it and you can listen to it in another way than you would if you were playing at the same time.

Aquelarre Magazine: What are your favorite bands? Any new good bands from your area you'd like to mention here?

ENTRENCH: Yeah absolutely, we got some great bands around here such as Raging Steel, Tyranex, Bombs of Hades and so on. Otherwise I mostly listen to older bands in alot of different genres everything between old 70's stuff to the extreme metal of today. My all time favorites which has always been and always will is Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, that's where it all started and still ends to this day.

Aquelarre Magazine: Any Entrench exclusives you can give us?

ENTRENCH: Don't know if there is any!? Sorry, don't know what to answer that question, the rest of this interview holds all exclusives at the moment!

Aquelarre Magazine: If you have to describe your sound to someone what would you tell them?

ENTRENCH: It depends on who I'm talking to. I want to say fast, neck breaking primitive death/thrash metal with lots of pacing dynamics and roots in the 80's underground but that won't work on all occasions unfortunately.

Aquelarre Magazine: Do you have any plans for a next release?

ENTRENCH: Yeah, we're currently writing material for a follow up and we're also going to record three songs including one cover of an old death metal band from our hometown, Abhoth, in late January. It'll be released on a 7" split with Bombs of Hades if everything turns out right. The new album will probably lean more towards death/thrash than Inevitable Decay did even if it had its moments too.

Aquelarre Magazine: What are your goals for Entrench?

ENTRENCH: Our goal was to release an album, now that we have done it we want to take it to next level. Trying to play more live shows eveywhere it's possible and make a second album that's even better than the first one and just trying to develop our sound and write better songs at the same time!

Aquelarre Magazine: Whats's one good thing and one bad thing about being in a band?

ENTRENCH: There are lots of good things, for example that it keeps you alive, you got something to pour your heart into and express yourself creatively and you always got something to do! One bad thing is that sometimes it's really hard to make it work, we all have to compromise to get along sometimes and everyone can't get the way he wants every time. But that's really a minor problem, we generally get along very well.

Aquelarre Magazine: What do you like to do when you're not playing music?

ENTRENCH: I'm pretty much into fishing, it's a great opposite to all the noise I surround myself with, just to take the boat and go out on a quiet lake in the woods and not have to worry about anything else but the weather and why the damn fish isn't taking the bait! Of course I listen to alot of music, buying records and finding new bands also. Music is always priority one.

Aquelarre Magazine: Do you think that Thrash Metal will see any sort of resurgence?

ENTRENCH: I don't know, probably sometime. It's a shame I think that metal in general is pretty trendy, even if everyone tries to tell you the opposite. Few years ago it was the coolest thing ever to play 80's style thrash, now it feels like all too many think it's just unoriginal and cliche. Now it seems like old school heavy metal and death metal is the shit, which is just as unoriginal, at least around here in Sweden. I don't think that many bands change or play music based on what's in or out but the metal public seems to follow one thing at a time.

Aquelarre Magazine: That's all the questions I have for now thanks for your time and all the best for your great band. Any final message you'd like to leave for any of the Thrash maniacs out there reading this?

ENTRENCH: Keep on supporting the metal underground and all good music it has to offer! Give our album a try, I bet you'll like it if you're into fast paced thrash metal on the boarder to primitive death metal! Thanks for the interview!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) "The System of Nature" DIGI CD review by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

This release has a lot of potential, great doomy sound with brutal melodies I have to say, it's a very original band most of the riffs are quiet nice with death metal vocals, Confusion and Maybe it's Time are the best songs of the album along with the cover of the brazilian band Vulcano Bloody Vengeance, if you like the old My Dying Bride, Katatonia and Paradise Lost you must have this CD. The only bad thing about this CD is the monotony of the songs, I hope the next release will be more diverse.

DISEIM (Latvia) Interview by hatredmeanswar2

Image

Diseim Interview
By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

We are a bunch of guys from Riga with a passion for metal. The band exists since 2007, but we only came around to releasing our first album now. The album is called "Holy Wrath", I guess it could tell more about us than I could in a couple of short sentences.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

We don't try to achieve a certain sound, we just put together whatever we like and then see if we all like the result. We've been described as a mixture of sludge, doom and old school death off course, sounds about right. It's nice to catch the listeners off guard with a thrashy track like Pyromania after a doomy track like Sinner. But the way we see it there's more death metal than anything else in our sound.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Many of our lyrics touch the topic of religion in one way or another, trying to show the lies, foolishness and ugliness of these barbaric institutions. In others we try to explore the human nature and flaws.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Our guitarist made it up. It's a secret, there is no real meaning behind the word. It doesn't exist in any language known to us. But it sounds nice.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

It's hard to pick out one, every shown is a different experience. We get out there and give it our best, the rest depends on the audience. But we hope they enjoy it as much as we do.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?

There will definitely be some concerts in our home and in the neighboring countries, we'd gladly play all around the globe, but we'll have to wait and see how everything turns out.

7. On a worldwide level how has your music been received by fans of underground metal?

We haven't heard any negative comments yet.

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line-up?

Yes, some of the members have other projects that don't fall into the same musical category as Diseim. For example our bass guitarist plays reggae and the drummer has and art-rock project. But Diseim is the main project for all of us.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

We'll keep doing what we like and see what becomes of it, I guess.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

All of us have different musical preferences. There are different bands and styles that influenced each of us individually. And there's probably no single band or style that influences all of us.

I'm listening to Exodus and Napalm Death at the moment, but my all time favorites are Akercocke and Behemoth. -Sergejs

11. What role does Occultism play in the music?

No role at all, actually. Or rather we use it as an example, a metaphor to describe the idea that lies beneath, what really is important.

12. How would you describe the metal scene in your home country of Latvia?

It's quite diverse. It doesn't get as much fresh blood as it used to, though. With the rising popularity of new “metal” genres most youngsters chose them in favor of the good old death/doom/black/etc. metal. Despite that there still is a number of great bands definitely worth listening to.

13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

In my case it's IT and scribbling with the pencil. -Sergejs

14. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

We'd like to thank you for the interview and the readers for getting this far.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) "Inevitable Decay" CD review by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

After six years of demos, Entrench released their debut album Inevitable Decay, Pure old school thrash metal to the vein the trio does a great job with killer riffs, hard and fast sound, you won't be disappointed with this maniacs, I can notice some influences of Destruction and Sodom, with a little bit of progressive sound as well, definitely this CD is one of my favorites, it is convincing in all aspects and more important it is a solid proof that Thrash Metal is still going strong. A powerful release, Thrash 'til death !!

SINCERA (Norway) "Cursed and Proud" DIGI CD review by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

Cool debut of Sincera, the sound of the instruments are suprisingly clear it sounds black metal to me, with a lot of influences of the 90's bands, the vocals sound weird in some songs but not bad at all. Fans of Norwegian metal will enjoy this brutal approach, the presentation of this digi cd is great, some inclusion of synth as well, the studio tracks are well done but the 2 live recording tracks sound really bad, not my favorite black metal album of the year but it's worth the try.

MAAX (U.S.) "Unholy Rock & Roll" DIGI CD review by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

Well here's my review of this insane and awesome band, I can only describe as Pure Alcoholic heavy metal with black metal vocals and evil lyrics, no harmonies of perfect sound here, just true metal directly to your brain, this style is just perfect and I say it again, this album kicks so much ass. It's like hear the almighty Motorhead but even louder and more evil, the bi...g difference of Maax is the influence of Punk along with rock and roll, what a lethal combination, another perfect release of Abyss Records, here's a perfect example that Underground Music is alive and well. Excellent band I can't wait for the next album!!!

DIE HARD (Sweden) "Evil Always Return / Emissaries of the Reaper" DIGI CD review by Aquelarre Magazine

Image

By Aquelarre Magazine

Swedish thrashers Die Hard released this amazing digipack that includes the reaper demo, plus 2 unreleased tracks. A lot of black elements in this band raw, pounding riffs, this stuff is great old school (the way it should be played). It's right in your face thrash metal, catchy demented guitar leads, evil vocals you will be asking for more and hallucinating brutal moshpits, I don't know what else to say about this great band, the music speaks for itself. Features Hakkan Jonsson of Watain on drums, fans of Venom will enjoy this awesome release, great great great!!!

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Ype

Fester is a Norwegian band that already in 1989 as Heroic Conduct was established in 1992 and 1994 for two full-lengths released. Now, eighteen years later, the band goes back to the third plate. The origins of the band is instantly in opener 'Rites of Ceres' clearly audible, it's a long, lingering song in the tradition of Burzum and Enslaved. The tone appears to put the rest of the album, because this is the vessel which Fester drained. The music remains a slow, atmospheric kind of black metal that has its roots in the Norwegian black metal scene of the '90s. Now this music is often not easy to digest and takes the beauty of the albums mentioned bands often only after a longer period of time. For example, in the form of certain hidden melodies or exciting song structures. It makes such music is difficult to review, it is only after a longer period of listening and settle possible a thorough and valuable opinion to form. In the case of Fester, I am not yet sure whether this is an album where I will be a year or two still discover new things and will eventually become addicted. Who knows? After a few listens I think not, despite the fact that this album enjoyable. Fans of the aforementioned references can 'A Celebration Of Death' not hesitate to give a chance, but taking into consideration that the music at first sight too primitive and too little intelligence seems to be the test of time as an exponent of the fertile Norwegian black metal scene to withstand.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metal-observer.com

Image

By Neil

I know very little about Norway’s FESTER apart from the fact that they released two albums during the early 90s and, in contrast to the majority of their fellow countrymen, played a slightly Doom-inflected brand of Death Metal. If certain reports are to be believed, the band called it a day after having received threats from the pesky anti-Death Metal ‘Inner Circle’ back in the day.
Well, here we are in 2012 and a new FESTER album has just surfaced. The album, appropriately titled “A Celebration Of Death”, has turned out to be a rather pleasant surprise for yours truly. As someone who doesn’t generally take too well to this sloooow CIANIDE/ASPHYX-style Death Metal, I ended up enjoying this one a whole lot more than I expected. A lot of this stems from the fact that these wily Norwegians don’t play things exactly as you’d expect them to. In addition to the rumbling Death/Doom riffing, they also added some effective vocal effects here, a faint industrial tinge there, and a whole lot of smartly-placed melodic sections that provide nice counterpoint to the funereal riffing. The result is an album comprised of easily detectable influences but the way they mix it all together makes it sound more fresh and unique than would otherwise be the case.
The opening “Rites Of Ceres” is a perfect example of this. Rather simplistic and moderately tempered riffs keep things ticking along nicely, before the bridge and chorus sections turns very melodic and melancholy, and I swear I even hear a vague horn sample going on in the background. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a slow Death Metal song that was this engaging. This technique is also evident in “The Black Tower”, though less successful, before “I’ll Hunt You Down” kicks things into a higher gear with its more pronounced speedy tempo and aggressive vocals. “March Of Death” is an oddity – devoid of a discernible main riff, it just keeps piling these muddy sounding chords and reverb effects into a rather fluid tempo/structure that reminds me of the kind of thing MAYHEM did on “Ordo Ad Chao”. It’s a bit of a mind-fuck but it’s unbelievably dark. In complete contrast, a track like “Last Day Of Battle Pt. II” goes for a more marching rhythmic tempo before closing out with a majestic melodic lead section that affords it a very triumphant vibe that provides a moment of brief respite from the overbearing moroseness of the rest of the album.
The only other FESTER disc I’ve heard before this was is 1992’s “Winter Of Sin”, a rather bland exercise in doomy Death Metal. “A Celebration Of Death” blows it out of the water, as it sees the band in complete control of their trademark sound, and with more than a handful of adventurous aces up their collective sleeve. Trust me – this is about as diverse as you’re ever likely to get when it comes to this particular type of Death Metal. Hell, even the cover art kicks ass! It’s not perfect though – the snare sound has an annoying synthetic/plastic-y thud to it, and I would’ve appreciated a few faster songs – but overall “A Celebration” is a very worthy comeback effort from these Norwegians.

SEPTEKH (Sweden) Interview by hatredmeanswar4

Image

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

The four of us came together in late 2008. The style and identity of the band manifested themselves quite quickly. Apparently those that have gone out in search of that style have ended up knee deep somewhere in the sludgy murky marshes where the brown and black waters of thrash and death metal boil. Over this basic goo lays a thick fog of punk with a small tint of rock in it. And the air is thin and hazy, with a myriad of scorched ash leafs swirling around, leaving those who breathe it with a toxic blackened taste that cannot be washed away… Perhaps. Or maybe it’s easier to say it like this: if you took Black Sabbath, put them on a boat in a lake of fire and forced them to play Slayer songs it would sound like Septekh… Maybe. I really don’t know!

This mix of rather punky metal (see, it wasn’t so hard) is what we try to package and present as really strong songs. And that’s what we have been doing from the very start; trying our best to craft really good tunes.

Nowadays we mostly exist out on an island just off the east coast. That’s where we’ve got our place, Studio 508. A home located in the midst of rural surroundings and the setting for our creative endeavours. We have recorded two Ep´s (one which is "The Seth Avalanche released via Abyss Records) and are entering the studio to record a full length this summer.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

Organic, harsh, raw and powerful. It´s a mix of the usual suspects; early Swedish and Norwegian bands tainted by... Something. We are not too keen on overdubs, triggering and those kind of things. We want to keep the live feeling and keep it as simple as possible.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

We try to keep our lyrics as condensed as possible. Exploring more generalized human qualities; sex, power, violence, language, death. The usual stuff I suppose, in some respect.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the band’s name?

Septekh is another name for Seth, Setek, Suetekh, Suty, Setekh, found in an old book that belonged to our base player George-Patrick's grandma. Coming to think of it there are a couple of pretty weird things in his family history... Anyway. Being who he was in the Egyptian pantheon we thought him to be a fitting figurehead for what we wanted to do musically, the perpetual dark brother of any ruling deity. Besides there are not that many metal bands named "Septekh" around is
there?

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Well one of our best was as an opening act for a rather arrogant headliner. We gave
everything and so did the bat shit crazy crowd. People would not let us stop playing! Even people who were there for the other band just lost themselves and went home after our show, not staying for the act they were there to see initially. Sweet revenge! A magical moment indeed.

We just go at it with full force, give everything we got and simply try to destroy you. Our stage performance is us performing our music. Our music is very honest and we try to reflect that by just attuning to the feel and try to communicate it. So there's really no over-dramatic theatrics or anything like that, apart from some unintentional dancing by David during a couple of his guitar solos. That said we do have plans for a more visual show in the future...

It´s not what you think. We´re talking morbid cabaret death dancers, full regalia and a venue from the 19th century!

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

A couple of one-off shows in Sweden. Possibly Copenhagen. We would love to do a more extensive tour. Live is when our songs shine the brightest and what they are written for in the first place.

7. On a worldwide level how has your music been received by fans of death and thrash metal?

So far so good. The response has been very positive but we haven't really had any "real" release until now with this record, so we'll see.

8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line-up?

Aside from a more rock oriented band (think ZZ Top on bad drugs) that, thankfully, only rears its ugly head during extremely drunk jam sessions Septekh is each member´s sole and single focus. No other projects or solo careers for us!

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

First of all I want to point out that "The Seth Avalanche" was recorded in June 2009. Almost three years ago. So we have had some time to grow as a band and fortunately we have used that time write more music. There is another EP ready for release and right now we are preparing to go into the studio this summer to record a full length album. The next EP (titled "Apollonian Eyes") is style-wise like a pit stop between the early material and the new stuff.

There will still be strong songs. For us it´s all about the songs; how the riffs fit together, the groove and the mood and how they build each track. With the new material we are going a step further in all directions so the fast songs are faster and the slower songs slower and overall there is more diversity. There will still be a couple of all out neck-whipping, thrashy Motorhead tunes. The one thing you could say about the general direction is that it´s darker than before. And more relentless und serious. The full length will simply carry more weight if you understand what I mean.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We have to acknowledge Death Breath because it was a show of theirs that sparked the desire to start the band. Other than that it´s pretty obvious that through the years members of Septekh have come across and enjoyed the music of punk/metal/rock/etc. acts such as: Exploited, Misfits, Turbonegro. Scandinavian bands of the nineties (and some still going strong today) such as Darkthrone, Entombed, DHG, Emperor, Satyricon, The Crown. We find things to be inspired by in different types of music and artists. Whether it is the musical mind of Mark
Knopfler or anything where Frost unleashes his elegant devastation.

The bottom line is that we enjoy GOOD music and that can really be anything. This is the style that we play and it´s the only thing we can do that feels natural to us. But that does not mean that we only listen to similar styles of music. In finding new inspiration, throughout the band we promote an eclectic taste.

As for what currently abuses our ears our drummer Staffan, a person of the obsessive kind, has been blasting the latest "Aura Noir" album for almost a month now and for the last week also a track called "Nightcall". Highly recommended! I think Nils is currently running on a mix of Kvelertak and Feists new album.

11. Does Occultism play any role in the music?

Depends on how you mean. The lyrics can sometimes veer into that territory and be about those kind of topics I guess. But it´s not like we practice magic or have rituals or anything like that.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

What do you mean?!?! Haha

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Not really. Thanks…

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Ype

"Masters Of Hate 'is the first big event of the 2007 Desultor formed. The first impression after a song or two was to be dealing with a fast, well-played mix of death and thrash metal with a singer who sounds like Warrel Dane of Nevermore. This description, after hearing the entire album is still relevant, but they need the occasional black metal influences are mentioned. These are reflected especially in the guitar riffs. The music is also very catchy and is the waterproof version is very catchy. All items will remain in the familiar quadruple time hanging and are therefore easy to follow. Although the band musically certainly present level (read: speed) operates, the predominantly clean vocals the whole old-school vibe with it. Other significant quality issues in this album are the guitar solos and bright and yet raw production. Actually there is nothing wrong with this album. So why no high score? Firstly, the music is a little too predictable to me a really long album to love it. Also frequently creeps me the feeling that the music not doing well (but good) vocals accompanied. I would like this album again listen with an aggressive death / thrash metal voice. Nevertheless an extremely enjoyable, conventional metal album that a diverse audience of several generations could appeal.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by executionerzine

Image

By Sancho Jeroni

Formed in 89 people who later would become part of bands and classic Norwegian scene as Kampfar, Carpathian Full Moon or Algol, Fester disappeared in 94 after having released two demos and two albums that today seem to be of worship (although I had not heard of them until now). In 2010 Kyrck Productions & Armour was in charge of reissuing their two demos on CD and LP, and this year Askim lords have decided it was time to reform and compose a new album after no more and no less than eighteen years of inactivity .
And if there is something undeniable in their sound is that it has some Norwegian, but to say that Death and Black Metal touch to dry and get away with not think that's too successful if you do not want to detract from an album as "A Celebration Of Death" unless we speak of its atmosphere and its lyrical content. Why? Because beyond gender, in the compositions of Fester is a very clear trend towards finding non-linear progressions and rather complex in the development of its themes. This aside that at no time looking for a brutal or violent effect but rather create decadent and sinister atmospheres, in addition to fucking cold.
In fact, in the ten themes that form the disk is a large percentage of Doom and Industrial (with some electronic arrangements) and Black and Death Metal, not to mention the flashes of Jazz or Prog'Rock can see one peeking here and there. Everything revolves around a very rhythmic guitar lines and hypnotic, very inspired by Celtic Frost at times, although in this case away from the usual monotony that generates this effect and using the melodies of a more black metal, except in the case of battery and scheduled basis, whose aim is insistent that the effect had the first Godflesh or Pitchshifter. Overall what you get is a mechanical effect really cold, scary and suffocating at times, that brings you the atmosphere of the old tapes Norwegian but the other way.
And then there's the production, because it is almost as important here as the compositions. And I must say reminds me somewhat of the "Filosofem" Burzum, only more severe based on, as if he wished to put a point of crudity and decrepitude to music recorded in a "normal" would a more rhythmic. Although the importance of keyboards and electronic arrangements before commenting on the texture is obvious that you have been impregnated.
Back to the beginning of the decomposition of the disk, if what you seek is to put sound to the impressive artwork that adorns the cover of "A Celebration Of Death" (by Eliran Kantor, who has worked with Testament, Sigh, Master or Atheist) , the process of putrefaction suggesting, in effect you are at the right disc. The album certainly tops the alternative version of the first track of this by Mortis, from entitled "Rites of Ceres" to "Rites Of Mortis".

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.blistering.com

Image

By David E. Gehlke

A beacon of light that shines through in the foggy haze that is the current retro death metal movement, Stockholm’s Desultor (go figure) have created a cacophonous maelstrom of DM madness on their Masters of Hate debut. Thrust up against dizzying guitar work, pounding, active drums, are of all things…clean vocals. It’s a combination that is mute in the death metal world, probably because few can figure out how to do it properly. Desultor certainly has, and it’s good enough to suggest that this is 2012’s best debut.

Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Markus Joha and drummer Michael Ibrahim, Desultor draws an instant comparison to A Celebration of Guilt-era Arsis, who at the time (2003) were a duo just like this. The parallels don’t end there, for Desultor has the same knack for savory melodies (see: “Denied”) and a similar technical fortitude, a defining trait that bolsters frenetic songs like the excellent “Another World” and whiplash-inducing “Division Insane,” one of the few songs that sees Joha employ a more hard-edged vocal style.

Joha is the make-or-break aspect of Masters of Hate. The Swede has a slight Warrel Dane-like curdle to his vocals, and if we really want to stretch things, comes across like a less-polished Oddleif Stensland of Communic. Regardless, Joha manages to plop his vocals down amidst a flurry of blinding riffs, most of which are well-suited for gurgles and grunts. Yet the man’s work on “And So We Bleed,” “The Luxury of Pain,” and “Caged” is natural-sounding and fluid, with nary a trace of sounding forced.

The progressive-minded who fawn over the essential works of Atheist, Cynic, and Death will easily find something to like about Desultor. Masters of Hate is multi-faceted and brims with enough versatility that any lateral moves out of the death metal realm should be rather effortless. In fact, calling this “death metal” might even be a reach. This could be the new age of progressive extreme metal…

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by http://www.teethofthedivine.com

Image

By Andrew Young

Sometimes you just need some filth in your life and Swedish band Septekh are all too eager to provide it in buckets. It seems like they pull every stop they can think of to make the whole experience as uncouth as they can, pushing their death-thrash riffs through a sludgy, somewhat dark production and injecting it all with sleazy blues themes and gutter lyrics as if with a used needle.
When your first song has such a great title as “Fuckslut from Hell” you’d seriously better back that shit up. And after just under three minutes of Discharge-influenced riffing and strained, frenetic vocals that resemble bitching more than singing, I think it’s very clear that they have.
Septekh explore different moods and colors over the course of the EP. “Shoot Them All” and the title track are rollicking thrash songs punctuated with huge chunks of dirty groove, while “Not Quite What I Had in Mind” is filled with highly effective blast beats that work so well because they’re completely absent from the previous songs. They’re kept like an ugly secret until you’re not really expecting them and then unleashed in a frenzy.
But things get really insidious with “Blunt Force to the Head,” which begins with a deliberate, relentless stomp of a riff that seems to go on forever like a roaming dinosaur. The vocals and drums misdirect several times, giving fake cues that the riff is going to change, but it goes on for a full minute and a half, just drilling deeper into the mind. Then when the tension is at its highest, it erupts into blasting drums and fiery, hateful riffing.
But to me the highlight of the EP is “Eating the Maneater,” which despite its double kick drumming and lyrics that conflate cannibalism and cunnilingus, is really just a big, balls-swinging blues song. And although it’s totally contrived, it gives me a chuckle every time I hear Nils Meseke say “known to modern maon.”
Although not featured a whole lot, guitarist David Wikström’s bluesy, traditional solos provide a burst of energy any time things even begin to look like they might drag. Meanwhile the variation in riffing keeps things interesting. Let’s face it, the whole concept is juvenile, misogynistic, and… well… stupid. And you know it’s really easy for that sort of thing to get old even over just six songs. But with the shifting speeds and moods it’s never boring. The stupidity of it all doesn’t matter because it’s just so much headbanging, filthy fun.
In the end it’s the vocals that ultimately steal the show. Meseke uses a lot of pitch variation, which really enhances the intensity of the music. I’m not talking about high-low switching like Black Dahlia Murder, but rather a whole range covering all of the ground from a full-throated death bellow up to a piercing screech. He shows versatility that is uncommon to harsh vocalists and his delivery is just so volatile it’s infectious.
This collection of songs has made the rounds previously under the title Not What I Had in Mind, but has received some production enhancements for this retitled re-release. Honestly it gives me the impression that they’re spinning their wheels if they’re still pushing an EP from two years ago. I’d really like to see a full length from these guys because, as good a job as they’ve done keeping my attention for 22 minutes, I want to know if they can do it for 35 or more.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by Hammerworld Magazine

Image

By M.P.

The Norwegian Fester was founded in 1989, and the 90s, the emerging black metal movement in parallel, they earned themselves a name in the underground. Total of two albums appeared in the Winter Of Sin and the Silence, which I find particularly strong in the latter. Large waves never clashed with the band around, but a very unique tone to death metal music were few black metal beszivárgással.
The long-time active again after returning four albums in 2012 élbolyában year waiting list in place. The Progress Kantor (TESTAMENT, Atheist, etc. Sigh.) COVER painted by quite magnificent, perfectly viszszaadja morbid atmosphere of the disk, and it portrays the theme of death, as not many of the metal. As the death metal játszsza no one way that a Fester. This is not blastbeatekről, technikázásról of the music, but once it comes to death metal, death is indeed the mood of experience trying to return to music.
The new much darker, borúsabb than ever before. The sound is very thick, fresh and totally unique. All the guitars, bass and concentrated, and the sounds Dobák sojátos special. Even the songs are slow or medium tempo up mumbling, súlyas riffs in between there is not a doomos.
Hear that in all the scary, Marmari not serve the earthly atmosphere, and therefore not all first-rate songs. Therefore, one should listen to this album, not numbers in pieces. The album has Thomas Andresen grunts can be heard, which is more extreme, like the two old coarse disc was played on two guitars / vocals altogether (Tommy Rolf Simonsen, Bjorn, "Tiger" Mathisen).
Definitely a good album, so this returning, although not as overwhelming as it was expecting. However, there are individuals in the metal.

This review was originally written in Hungarian and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review appears below.

A hosszú idő múltán újra aktív négyes visszatérő albuma 2012-es évi várakozó listám élbolyában foglalt helyet. Az Eliran Kantor (Testament, Atheist, Sigh stb.) által festett boritó egészen pazar, tökéletesen viszszaadja a lemez morbid hangulatát, s a halál témakörét úgy láttatja, ahogyan a metalban nem sokan. Ahogyan a death metalt se játszsza senki úgy, ahogyan a Fester.
Mind a gitarok, mind a tömény basszus, mind a dobak megszólalása sojátos, különleges.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by http://www.metal-zone.be

Image

By Vinnie

"A Celebration Of Death" is the fourth exit this Norwegian group founded in 1989 and whose latest achievement in 1994. Fester keeps going with his Satanic Black Metal but impure (not true for the uneducated) as the group mixes up Black, Thrash, Doom and Jazz. But where Fester really excels, it is in the murky atmosphere, the morbid and heavy riffs, taking the listener by the throat and never let go of the dying. titles present "A Celebration Of Death" are simply a complete success in kind, often taking the listener to walk against ("March Of Death" is the best example with its haunting rhythm, his incantatory voice, sought its battery). Yes, Fester is not content, like many Black formations, to bludgeon his music to the moribund 100 per hour, but plays on the subtle atmosphere. We could just blame the gang to take certain passages in length, but overall, it goes pretty well. Also note that two distinguished guests, Guido St. Roch and Mortiis who came carry a tune. The cover is signed on Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, SODOM, ATHEIST, SIGH, Anacrusis), no less. An album that redefines the future of Black.

MAAX (U.S.) "Six Pack Witchcraft" DIGI CD EP review by ChaosVault

Image

By ChaosVault

Well, I am truly reflecting on am I fucked up? Many of labels sends me a promos and makes an advertisments that I just have received a revelation of the decade. And I feel nothing. And in the meantime I received a EP of band which I even don't know and – surprise! But I have to say one thing – I've heard it for a thousands time, such way of playing. Simply as instruction of using a toilet paper, well-worned like an old leather jacket. And the band's name taken from some sort of a cheap deo-spray for men. But these guys doesn't look for a good boys, smelling with the new Hugo Boss perfume or something like that. Probably they also doesn't relishing the beauty of the music in arms of their lady. Well, unless this lady is Jack Daniels, haha. That's what I hear on the EP of their, entitled "Six Pack Witchcraft”, where I met some influences of the bands which is impossible not to enjoy. Like The Crown – bery hearable in the title track. Or Norturnal Breed – in the rest of tracks, haha. And classics – Venom and Motörhead. All these influences are poured with the black metal. Groovey riffs, simply tracks, rude and vulgar music. Fuck, that's how metal should be. Maybe I am not fastidious, maybe I can not found a real art in other bands, but I don't give a fuck. Many of people should ask what I see in Maax' music. But I don't know, what I see in it! I just play this Ep and I am getting ADHD. That's all.

DESULTOR (Sweden) Interview by http://www.blistering.com

Image

By David E. Gehlke

The retro thrash boon that took place a few years ago soured quickly and got bad…really bad. The current old-school death metal revival that is taking place threatens to be equally as rough for those in search of fresh-sounding bands. It’s like everywhere you turn a new band is rehashing old Dismember and Entombed riffs, beating their chest in the name of Autopsy. It’s no different than four years ago when you couldn’t walk out of your house without being greeted by some lackey in a jean jacket and high-tops whose band had heard Infernal Overkill the week prior. Metal sure likes to cannibalize itself sometimes, doesn’t it?

Disregarding the mini-rant above, a fresh face has emerged on the scene in the form of Stockholm’s Desultor. Their approach is totally in the extreme death metal vein, but with one BIG caveat – they primarily use clean vocals. Such a combination is incredibly difficult to conjure up, yet on the band’s Masters of Hate debut (Abyss Records), the duo of singer/guitarist/bassist Markus Joha and drummer Mikael Ibrahim light a fire under the DM scene’s ass with an array of all-guns-blazing forays like “Another World,” “Denied,” and “Division Insane.” Equally progressive and melodically-minded, Masters of Hate is a carte blanche for those who find value in bands like Death, Cynic, and Atheist. Quite the mighty group to be in.

With what is surely to be one of the year’s best debuts in his back pocket (the band formed in 2007), Joha was kind enough to answer Blistering’s questions, so read on and learn something about a band that hopefully will be one of the underground’s top-flight acts in the near future…

Blistering.com: You’re a new band, so relay everything that has happened prior to the release of Masters of Hate.

Markus Joha: We are two guys from the poorer areas of Stockholm, Sweden. We love to play metal together and jam and write music together and now we have come to this point that we had to release a debut album after several years playing together in several bands, projects and tours. People seem to have problems to decide what genre we play in. We know it´s a new sound that people hasn’t got used to yet and they are still pretty chocked like when people saw Kiss for the first time because of their crazy makeup. Now they react the same way and not for the way we look, but for the way we play metal. We like to call it "extreme metal" because we play pure metal, but we are taking it to a lot more extreme. Except for the sound, we also think the album has a lot of great tunes and glad that a lot of fans enjoy it and critics and media as well, so where we stand right now today feels just pretty damn awesome.

Blistering.com: What drew the two of you together?

Joha: We played a lot together in different bands and projects when we both worked as session musicians. We realized pretty quickly both our capacities where a lot more special than the ones we played with. They were very good players but when we both played together we realized that there was something extra between us. I had a band that we just played one crappy demo together with older members so Mikael Ibrahim jumped in and we both started the band from scratch and started to play our own ideas and now the band is Desultor. We recorded another demo with the band, but with our own fresh new ideas and decided to put all our money on it and press 40 professional CD´s which we sent to 40 different labels. I recorded the vocals, guitars and bass and Mikael played the drums. We also put the demo on MySpace and it was a success for a demo since that we got like 3-400 listeners each day. And since then we have just grown stronger as a duo every day.

Blistering.com: There are only two of you in the band, so how quickly are you able to pull material together?

Joha: Very quickly. Every time we go in to the studio we got like 20-30 different new songs to pick from.

Blistering.com: Are there any plans to add additional members? Or will you remain a studio-only band?

Joha: No, we are tired of four and five band member drama, this duo thing fits us better. With this way we can work every process faster without any problems and when we gig, we just ask friends or session musicians like ourselves to play with us so there is no problem at all working as a duo. We still have a lot of people around us working with us and [it] helps us out a lot with our stuff, but in the music creativity, it´s only me and Mikael who writes and decides.

Blistering.com: What’s the songwriting process like? And do you find it difficult to put clean vocals on top of extreme death metal?

Joha: It´s like a big musical playground for us. There is no rules or laws, it´s up to us to do whatever we want to do. We decide our own rules. We don’t care if people wouldn’t like our stuff, we would still continue playing our stuff. There are too many rules and principals in metal these days and we prefer to think outside the box, so we prefer to work this way. No, there are no difficulties to put clean vocals, it´s just plain fun to me. Only difficulties is that there is no studio that can record clean vocals to extreme music because they are used to record growl and black metal screams, so it´s always pre-adjusted to that kind of vocals. And also the sound guy on gigs doesn’t know how to put the vocals in the picture if he hasn’t heard us before or give us a chance to a soundcheck.

Blistering.com: The fact you have a clean singer in extreme death metal is certainly unique. What is it about having sung vocals that appeals to you more than standard growls and barks?

Joha: Thank you. We just think it fits well with our sound and we recommend more people to try it out!

Blistering.com: The album is divided into two chapters. Can you elaborate what they’re about?

Joha: It´s a story that continues to the next album with chapters 3 and 4. It´s a theme in four chapters which we are working on right now.

Blistering.com: What’s your opinion of all of these bands simply rehashing Stockholm death metal ala Entombed and Dismember? Do you think they’re making death metal regress as opposed to progressing?

Joha: They are old-school bands that still goes out to a lot of people and we will probably become an old-school band some day in about 20-30 years.

Blistering.com: Masters of Hate definitely pushes some boundaries on songs like “Another World” and “Division Insane.” The cool thing is that you find one or two central ideas and focus on them. What’s your approach to putting songs like this together?

Joha: We just love to jam and put the most awesome stuff we come up with and put them all together. We love to play with the simplest ideas to the most complex ideas and put them all together. We don’t know why a lot of people love certain songs from the album extra more than the others. We are just happy that people actually like our stuff!

Blistering.com: Are there any bands in Sweden or abroad you feel a sort of kinship with?

Joha: All the bands out there has their own genre. It´s hard to explain, but they are the only ones who think like we do.

Blistering.com: Finally, what’s on the agenda for the rest of 2012?

Joha: First of all, we are going to push the debut album when it reaches to Europe next week. And then we are going to do some interviews and different projects until the summer comes around. Only then I can take some time off from work and do maybe some touring or a lot of gigs as possible! And enjoy life!

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) "Nihil" CD EP review by ChaosVault

Image

By ChaosVault

They came from Venezuela, they are Noctis Imperium and they play black/death metal. Well, the moniker isn't too original, so I was expected all the worst. But „Nihil” surprised me, really! No, they didn't record second „Altar Of Madness”, though this stuff isn't very bad. We can find here pretty good mix Morbid Angel's influences (not only because of the cover) and Behemoth for example. Sure, both this bands are still before Noctis Imperium, but as I've said, this Ep isn't bad. You know what I was afraid of? I was afraid the „Nihil” will be indeterminate, full of fake aggression. But the aggression here is very clear and true. But sometimes it is disturbed by slowdowns and melodeclamations, which repress the energy. Especially if just right after that we hear „Maze Of Torment”, where nothing similiar take a place and this track just kills (in their version as well)! One track marks out from the rest - „Unus in nihil”, which is definitelly slower, more in black metal vein. But after all the four studio tracks shows us, that Noctis Imperium has a chance to swim on the wide ocean (fuck, what a graphomania!). But the live tracks are also cool, when we are listen to them we can imagine that band goes pretty good during their shows. What is a pain here is lack of originality – those numbers are forgotten right after the listening. All, but one track... but it is a cover, haha. It is good EP, but I can not recommand it to buy blindly, better listen before it. Unless You will buy everything where Nick Baker's sitting behind the drum kit...

SEPTEKH (Sweden) "The Seth Avalanche" CD EP review by ravenousreviewswebzine

Image

By SmithMetal84

The first thing that drew my attention about Septekh was their unusual cover art; a yellow/orange background with a rough sketch of a wolf of some sort in the front. Not only is it somewhat unorthodox in terms of typical metal cover arts, but it also gave a small peek into the band’s ambitions: to not completely rip off any one band and keep their style of death/thrash somewhat distinct from other acts’. This they achieved, branding a raw yet clean style of death/thrash that occasionally delves into a more blackened proclivity. That’s not to say that these guys are completely original either, because in this day and age that’s near impossible; but their style of death/thrash isn’t a clear rip-off of any particular band or previous style, and there’s even an almost punky feel that occasionally makes itself apparent throughout this 22-minute EP, making it that much more fun and entertaining.

There’s considerable variation in the EP, and I cannot honestly say that there weren’t some surprises here and there. The biggest of these, perhaps, was "Eating The Maneater". It goes along extremely bluesy riffs, and it’s admittedly catchy; hell, without the heavily distorted and corpulent guitars, I’d have a hard time considering this a metal track at all; and I mean that in a good way, because it’s probably been done little before. The rest of the tracks are definitely more ‘metal,’ all of them powerful, raw and provoking headbanging in the listener. And to their credit, a good chunk of the riffs are catchy; whether they’re mid-paced and chuggy (“Blunt Force To The Head”) or punky and fun (“Fuckslut From Hell”--this song is definitely a highlight). There are also some that bear similarities to retro-thrash bands, which can only be regarded as a detriment to their music, but luckily there’s not overly many of these. Regardless of what style they cleave to, however, all of the riffs on this EP are arguably powerful and fun, almost always succeeding in eliciting headbangs from the listener.

The vocals are harsh rasps mixed with low death growls, lending their music a more blackened thrash feel at times. The immense guitar tone and the clean production renders their music akin to modern metal, (unfortunately), and while these guys aren’t very old-school, they do retain an original sound and succeed in emitting a not-yet-prostituted style of death/thrash. I really like, however, the bluesy and punk riffs that these guys put into play occasionally, because they’re actually pretty damn fun, and that’s what make this EP distinct and separate from other bands--some of the songs actually lean more towards death ‘n‘ roll than death/thrash, which I'm not too fond of, but they make up for it. And the further in that I got into the EP, it kept coming back to me that their music is not at all what I had expected, which is a good thing; their unpredictability and their ability to surprise the listener with different styled segments. Sure, there are some mediocre riffs--as to be expected--and some instances where their music becomes a little too modern metal-y for my taste, but this remains a fairly fun EP overall.

FESTER (Norway) "A Celebration of Death" CD review by battlehelm

Image

By Anders Ekdahl

I remember when I bought Fester’s first album “Winter Of Sin” from No Fashion Records back in the 90s. At that time extreme metal from Norway was a novelty. Today almost 25 years later there is no novelty value in being a metal band from Norway. Back then Fester felt like a fresh breath of air. Today the scene is totally different. Still I found myself liking “A Celebration Of Death”. There is an air of something special to the album. A feeling of something great lurking in the shadows, ready to award you if you stick buy it until the end. I got the same feeling the first time I heard Norwegian Hades (now Hades Almighty). That there is something more to this than just being another metal album in a long line of metal albums. That this is the thing to go for if you like slow, grand extreme metal with a majestic aura surrounding it. Cool stuff all in all and a worthy return.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by metalreview

Image

By Dan Obstkrieg

Apart from the rather questionable choice of a name just one ‘y’ away from their semi-legendary countrymen in Desultory, and despite having a band logo that resembles a toothbrush cum torture device, Sweden’s Desultor impresses on this debut full-length by turning a style that too often becomes a bland fusion of metallic modernity into a compact serving of reckless yet well-mannered energy.

Desultor’s core duo of guitarist/vocalist Markus Joha and drummer Ibrahim Stråhlman concern themselves on Masters of Hate with a brashly enthusiastic and highly modern blend of melodeath/thrash. The drumming in particular also carries more than a whiff of the industrial overtones of Strapping Young Lad, and yet the whole careening package is topped off with snarling power metal vocals that sound like a much less acquired-taste-y Warrel Dane.

On the guitar front, this is an album about riffing, not riffs. So, while none of these tunes will have you swinging your skin axe (that’s just a synonym I just made up for ‘air guitar,’ you perverts) days after the fact while waiting in line at the DMV, the fretwork works in a lightning-fast lockstep with the drums to make you groove fast and groove hard. The double-tracked soloing that pops up frequently (see “Division Insane,” “Denied,” and “Black Monday,” the latter of which is nearly half soloing) is a needed breather from the otherwise endless procession of chunky but production-smoothed melodic death/thrash riffing, while the drums for the most part alternate between blasting with clinical precision and blanketing the mix with an inescapably modern double-bass barrage.

Given that the album is already such a concise statement, the three pointless interludes take up valuable killing time, and the songs with less memorable vocal phrasings or slightly less vicious riffing attacks do become a bit of a blur as the album wears on. Still, although the energy of the band’s attack hits harder early on in the record, the songs are made of sterner stuff in the second half, from the lurid tremolo melody and riffing on the upbeat of “The Luxury of Pain,” to one of the album’s most memorable choruses in “And So We Bleed,” to the celebratory “Masters of Hate,” which sees the vocals get pleasantly unhinged (perhaps almost Baloff-ed).

For a debut full-length, this gets the job done pretty well. While the vocals are an unusual choice for the style, there is nothing revolutionary about Desultor. And yet, one gets the sense that they are carrying on the good fight - metal for metal’s sake. Masters of Hate works best as a straight shot of pummeling adrenaline, so maybe instead of overthinking it we all ought to shut our mouths or punch a cow or get punched by a cow. For Desultor’s part, well, they’ve just brought thirty-four minutes of hard-charging good times. What you do with the fine ashen mist that follows is your business, and yours alone.

HAT (Norway) "Vortex of Death" DIGI CD review by http://www.wintertorment.com

Image

By patrick

vortex of death is hat's {or hate in norse, swedish language} second release.looking at the band's bio it looks like the band originally started in 1993 {under the name ravnr} and was on hiatus until 2006 when the duo returned as hat. this is defintly a must hear if you are a fan of the "classic" cold, grim black metal that norway is best known to produce.the band has a great sound and are obviously know their instruments as they play the old-school style of norwegian black metal but they do it with enough original ideas they don't come off sounding like a 3rd rate clone.defintly a must hear for fans of old-school norwegian black.

DESULTOR (Sweden) "Masters of Hate" CD review by http://www.lordsofmetal.nl

Image

By Ype

Masters Of Hate’ is the first sign of life of Desultor from Sweden, formed in 2007. The first impression after hearing a song or two was a fast, well-played combination of death and thrash metal with Warrel Dane (Nevermore)-like vocals. After hearing the whole album, this description remains relevant. Apart from some black metal riffs, that stood out after listening a few times more. Overall, the music is very well-executed and catchy, which makes it a very pleasant listening experience. All songs are played in the familiar quadruple time signature which makes them easy to follow. While the band operates on an up-do-date musical level (fast and tight), the predominant clean vocals add an old-school vibe to the entire album. Other scoring points of ‘Masters of hate’ are the guitar solos and the album’s clear but raw sound.

Overall, there is nothing wrong about this album. So, why no top score? First, the music is a little too predictable to stay exciting for the length of a whole album. Second, I more than once got caught with the feeling that the (actually well done) clean vocals do not really match the music. I am curious to hear this album again with a more traditional death/thrash metal vocalist on it. Nevertheless, a really enjoyable extreme modern metal album remains, which has the potential to please a wide variation of metal fans from different generations.
