Does anyone have any playlists or particular albums they like to listen to when they run?

I listen to skagos, celtic frost, molested (a.k.a. purgation) (norway), and mostly just black metal. It goes good with the cold atmosphere of being outside when i'm running.

Anything I listened to in 10th or 11th grade is great for running. During those times I ran cross country, so having songs that remind me of that time period make me run for much longer without the fatigue. Such bands include Dimmu Borgir, Limbonic Art, Arcturus, Summoning, Windir, etc. The general theme I guess is cleanly produced metal that is either catchy or upbeat.

The funny thing is, I graduated in 2006 and most bands I discovered after that don't do so well when I run...

The opposite is true for the gym. Many post 2006 discovery bands dominate my Ipod when I lift and go to the gym.

For me, industrial metal or industrial techno (Rammstein, Nachtmahr) tends to work really well.

Blind Guardian, Soilwork, Iron Maiden, mid-period In Flames, Kamelot (mostly 'Epica'), Diabolical Masquerade and Emperor for night running, early Sepultura, Queensryche's 'Rage for Order' for night running, some Katatonia....

Speed or aggression isn't as important to me as feeling. I like things to have a kind of desperate, yet driving, feel.

I haven't ran much lately because I've been trying to bulk up but when I would go for runs in high school around the neighborhood I feel like 99% of the time I would listen to Ensiferum's S/T and Iron the rest of the time. Those 2 albums, especially the first one, could not have a more perfect feel for running. Whenever I would try to play something else while running it just would not pump me up as much.

Mine is an Iron Maiden mix that consists of Run to the Hills, Running Free, and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

On repeat.

You guys are my heroes! We're definitely on the same frequency.

I run 2 to 4 kms on a daily basis before working out, and since running is a solitary activity, what better company than your headphones and your iPod/mp3 player? I've been increasing the number of tracks for my playlist, especially made for running/jogging purposes... and here it is! You'll notice the double bass drum or somehow fast tempo is something all these songs share in common. Plus, the list is quite eclectic. Some suggestions would be nice as well :)

(it goes well played like this, non-stop).

Spoiler: show
Iron Maiden - Be Quick or Be Dead
At the Gates - Blinded by Fear

Iron Maiden's 'Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner' is perfect! Keep the pace... hold the race...
I had Ensiferum's 'Token of Time', 'Guardians of Fate' and 'Treacherous Gods' on my playlist as well but, somehow, I deleted the last one.

Tip: With the running time of Falkenbach's Baldur's Tod (almost six minutes), if you keep your pace with the tempo of the song, you can do about 1 km in that time.

Well, while I do run every other day, sometimes a few days in a row if I can't get any other exercise in, I don't listen to music while doing it. I used to in the beginning, but once it got serious, it just distracts me from keeping pace as well as pacing myself correctly. Running is also a good time for going through things in your head, sorting out your life, priorities, things that need doing and once again, the music distracts from that as well.

When I run I generally make a play list with really dark heavy stuff like Immolation, Incantation, Profanatica, or catchy classics like Dio, Venom and Running Wild. Sometimes I will throw in some rockabilly or industrial. I also like to run to songs I wanted to or did Burlesque to to keep me motivated. I never really stick to one album and always mix it up!

I like to run to Nuclear Assault and Flotsam & Jetsam, Artillery, Coroner, that sort of thing. Oh, and Rust in Peace. No album pumps me up like that one. :-)

I was a high school cross country runner during the fall of 1986, (at the risk of dating myself!) which was the year Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" came out. That "Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner" track practically became my personal soundtrack to that fall. But with that said, I typically don't listen to much music when I am running; because I like to be able to hear approaching cars, etc.

Judas Priest - Electric Eye
Just perfect a perfect driving rhythm. Even if I was about to collapse and this song comes on, I'd keep going just to hear the whole thing.

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
This song is banned in my car. It's just too dangerous to headbang for seven minutes straight while the speedometer keeps rising.

Persuader - Turn to Dust
The manic vocal style of this song really gets me going.

Rainbow - A Light in the Black
8 minutes of speed. Enough said.

Running Wild - The Phantom of Black Hand Hill
I'm surprised this song has not killed me yet. It could do it in about half a dozen different ways.

When I run I actually usually listen to Lateralus by Tool, though I never listen to the album other than that. I fell it kind of calms me down, and gets me in the zen of running. I can run noticably longer when listening to Lateralus then when listening to my normal music like Ghoul and Frightmare.

This week, I've decided I like running to improvisational jazz piano. The Lausanne disc from Keith Jarrett's Solo Concerts Bremen/Lausanne is fucking fantastic.

I usually listen to some fast death metal while doing any kind of physical activity. Usually it consists of Nile, Hour of Penance, Dying Fetus, Decapitated, and some thrash like Slayer, Megadeth, Destruction, Exodus, ect.
That's not all of it, but it's different every time.

Psytrance is good... I also have a playlist of songs that make me happy! There's no genre or style theme and lots of them aren't even good, they just make me happy. That works pretty well as a shuffled list. Nothing quite like a really upbeat track by, say, Amorphis, or Sisters of Mercy or whoever to raise the spirits when I'm flagging. That said, I do have to skip the odd very mellow track. I find this shuffle list works better than albums as a general thing because I'm pretty OCD about listening to full albums and I usually only run 5 miles at a time so I don't get to the end of longer releases, which sucks!

I like a lot that go easily in the stepping rhythm, for some reason I've found Immortal to fit this category. A lot of times power metal as well, Blind Guardian (Particularly Tokyo Tales), Sonata Arctica, Iron Maiden, anything that sorta has that "freight train" moving in one specific direction feeling.

I don't regulary run, but one time in school, we had a running day and Legion Of The Damned seemed to work really well... infact any death/thrash band would work well imo.

years ago I, too, listened to atmospheric BM stuff. However it turned out that catchy AOR/Hard Rock (esp. from the 80s). Very uprising and pushing stuff, makes you run on and on with a big smile, probably even singing/shouting along.
Btw - here are two links to some fantastic mixes (each about 45 minutes long) full of soundtrack songs in that vein (taken from Rocky, Bloodsport, Kickboxer and whatnot)

For whatever reason, one of the best albums I listened to while running on a treadmill was Antaeus' "Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan". Yeah, I know running on a treadmill isn't very extreme, but it was a great album to listen to while doing so because the relentless drums and MkM's filthy screams just made me push myself to run faster the more tired I got.

Generally listen to electro/house music while training. Well, either that or grind.

Just something about doing heaves while listening to Nasum and Insect Warfare that gets me all pumped up...

My attention span's so short I always fail miserably whenever I try to make a playlist, so I just smack shuffle on.
Ironically, I spend that much time going 'Next, next, next' any exercise session or walk or whatever just flies by.

I run a lot...probably 6+ hours (50 miles) a week and most of the time I rock black metal or fast paced death metal stuff. Lately I have really gotten into the folk/viking vibe while running. Bands like Finntroll, Eluveitie, Falkenbach or even Korpiklaani have this bouncy/energetic feel that keeps me going.

Mostly atmospheric black metal like Summoning, stuff like Amon Amarth and Eluvetie as well Bone Awl and Akitsa.
Black metal in general in general is great to keep you pumped and RUNNING FOR SATAN when it's balls-freezingly cold outside

From time to time I also put some energetic, intense electronic stuff, and it works well too.

I was listening to Alestorm this morning while running and it was good. Nice and upbeat. I was signing/screaming along to pirate tunes before the sun came up while it was raining. Fun stuff.

i got the first mix of this a year or two ago, and it was just AMAZING for jogging to.
and reading this has got me excited to chuck it back on the ol' mp3 player. i worked out a new route around the outskirts of town so i'm gonna give it a shot this afternoon. booyah!

OT: i prefer upbeat, rocking tracks. preferably with constant "beats" and not too many time/tempo changes. there was a municipal waste album i used to listen to a lot a few years back (would never bother with them otherwise), edguy's rocket ride and blind guardian's imaginations from the other side albums really work, as does a lot of punk. pennywise's about time or bad religion's the grey race are gerat too. basically, if it's well-produced and upbeat it'll work.

I'm not particularly fond of running, and I really don't like long/slow distance running. So what I used to do a lot was run intervals. Running (usually on trails) mixed with slower walking/hiking in the down time. Sometimes I would set a playlist up so that I would run for the duration of a particular song and then rest/walk for the duration of the following song. I would usually alternate the list so that it went "faster, more intense" song followed by "slower, mellower" song. Playlist might go something like this:

1). Cobalt - "Arsonry" [run like a bastard!]
2). Cough - "Crooked Spine" [walk and rest, enjoy that amazing riff at the end]
3). Deathspell Omega - "Abscission" [run like a bastard, get creeped out]
4). Sleep - "Dragonaut" [rest, space out]
5). Psycroptic - "Immortal Army of One" [run!]
6). Acid Bath - "Graveflower" [catch breath and try not to vomit from exertion]

etc. etc. (depending on endurance/how one is feeling)

This worked really well. I haven't done it in awhile, but thinking/talking about it now is making me want to do it again. It can be fun (setting up the playlist and listening to it, that is--not running; running is rarely any fun for me). :)

For lifting I will listen to just about anything. Slow, fast, crushing, blistering... doesn't matter. As long as it's heavy.
