I could hear Morrissey on some flowery as shit power metal.

Actually though, David Gahan on some Xasthur-esque DSBM would be pretty cool.

Gahan's a good pick. Like it a lot, in fact. Sade would be really interesting in a doom/drone band. People laugh about George Michael, but really, would he be any different than Rob Halford? Except (and let's be honest here people) better technically? Right. I thought so. Diamanda Galas isn't really a pop singer but could work for someone looking to go more atmospheric too.

Not only has Björk done stuff with Mike Patton. During the Swansong recording sessions, Carcass were asked to remix a Björk track - "Isobel". This wasn't a remix as such but more of a re-recording with only Björk's vocals remaining. All rhythm guitars were handled by Bill Steer, and the track saw light of day in March 1996 on Björk's "Hyperballad" single. Here's the track:

...enjoy!

(kind of a wierd thread so far but I'm not here to judge...) I wanna say Tom Waits, but maybe is that not "pop" enough? Guess not. I dunno, some of these female pop vocalists- Alecia Moore (Pink) and Kelly Clarkson have great, powerful voices that would lend themselves well to more aggressive music. Some of Pink's more upbeat tracks border on hard rock as it is; as a "metal" singer she would probably do okay. It would have to be someone like that; some of these R&B singers are too, well, "lightweight" to pull off metal. I mean, I couldn't see someone like Rihanna or Chris Brown do anything approaching hard rock. Dont have the right kind of voice for it. The other two I mentioned could do it easily though.

Billy Idol springs to mind; I always thought that his stuff was pretty poppy, although he's apparently not classified as 'pop.' Obviously, he had the right kind of voice and attitude to do some kick-ass metal.

Also, I feel like an obvious choice is actually Avril Lavigne. She's got the right range and delivery for metal, although I don't like any of the stuff that she's actually done. Say what you will about her material (and I'll agree), but she actually would be a very good metal singer.

Finally, I think Lady Gaga could actually pull it off. She's a very versatile vocalist, from what I can tell. If reports of her taste in some metal are true, she might actually end up releasing some metallic songs at some point. Some of her songs and imagery do seem to intentionally reference metal bands and/or metal culture.

You know, she sang some kind of pop rock back in the day (16 years ago) and she is quite the guitar player. She could do a very cool Lacuna Coil type of thing, or Evanescence (yeah, not metal but almost) or some kind of middle eastern-folk-metal stuff, given her roots and a couple of her early songs.

If Beat It is anything to go by, it would've been interesting to hear Michael Jackson sing a metal song or two.

Wrong, man! She was born in Colombia, yes, but both her parents are from Lebanon and she's actually very proud of her cultural background and her ancestors. Actually, she used to mix middle-eastern melodies into her pop/rock stuff circa 1998.

Nah, not 'ignorance', just 'not enough information'. It would be ignorance if you knew the facts (of any kind) and yet stick to the previous idea (in any field). No worries...

Michael Jackson would be a nice option.
Miguel Bosé, from Spain (or Panama, the country he was born) It will be incredible to hear him in a Gothic voice, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIWq-V2H4V8&ob=av2e
Just imagine this in with a Gothic feel, that something i will be interesting to hear!

If Maggie Reilly did gothic metal, then that would likely be the best gothic metal ever. She has actually done some background vocals for Sisters of Mercy, and many of you will be familiar with Blind Guardian's version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QXxozXsDZY

Oh man, seconding that opinion. He has a seriously whiskey soaked voice. He'd make a good vocalist in Electric Wizard, or something like that. Something really doomy, but not on the Candlemass side of things. And to add to thread myself, I'd have to say Ian Kenny from Birds of Tokyo would make an intensely awesome power metal vocalist.

Also, although he's more rock than pop, does anyone else thing Meat Loaf would of made one of the best metal vocalists ever? Seriously! And Colin James is blues rock, but he has such an aggressive voice.

I think Rihanna would be awesome in an epic doom metal band. If you've ever heard any of her slower songs you can agree, she definitely has the right voice for it.

I remember the first time I saw "Bat Out of Hell". I figured it had to be a metal album, based on the cover. I was rather disappointed with the music.

Don't laugh, but I think Bryan Adams could pull off singing for a Motorhead style band.

This band isn't pop, they're shoegaze/dreampop and they've done plenty of darker songs that I think would fit well in a metal band, mainly a gothic/doom/drone metal with a cleaner set of vocals. I'm having a hard time finding a doom/drone/ambient metal band that uses a cleaner vocal style so this would be a dream.

Wel, I guess Kate Bush is much better than most of female metal vocalist and I think Sharon Den Adel et al was influenced by this woman.

How about Annie Lennox?

Jonsi from Sigur Ros would be an interesting "metal" singer if you put him in a band like Alcest or better yet, a band like Nadja or The Angelic Process where his vocals would be all reverbed and what-not. I have a thing for vocals with ethereal qualities to them mixed in with metal, hah.

Also, Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke (Post-Punk/Industrial type stuff, got a bit heavier in the last few years anyway) has some really nasty vocals, especially for a 51 year old. He'd make a great metal singer.
