Looking for more stuff like Portishead and Ketamine Suns, if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears. I'd prefer female vocals but feel free to recc bands with male singers too.

(PROTIP: I know Massive Attack, they aren't really what I'm after)

Examples:

Portishead
Ketamine Suns

I'm not really familiar with the genre, but I've been told that the "Teachings in Silence" EP by Ulver is triphop, and I love that release. It's dark and melancholic, that's for sure.

See if this is what you're looking for:

You NEED to hear Goldfrapp's 'Felt Mountain'. Not quite as 'hoppy' as Portishead, but definately trip-hop with some incredible atmosphere. Very dark, very morose, kinda James Bondy beats with angelic female vocals. The only good thing Goldfrapp has ever done, as far as I'm concerned.

You might be interested in Vespertine by Bjork. Not exactly trip-hop, but a similar mood.

Trifonic - Emergence (2008)

http://trifonic.bandcamp.com/album/emergence-2

not really trip hop (there are strong electronic sounds in some tracks) but surely an underground gem
and tracks with vocals (Broken, Lies, Sooner Or Later, Good Enough) are REALLY good

I agree with Tricky, he is really great and has some moody songs as well:

You should totally try with the Silent Hill videogames' soundtracks, made by Akira Yamaoka, really amazingly dark trip hop/ambient/alternative rock:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgwXukns ... re=related

Also, Chino Moreno's new project, Crosses, is not really Trip Hop but has some elements and a very gloomy mood, very similar to Unkle:

And here's some Unkle, if you are interested:

Hope some of it matches what you are looking for!

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...

Truly an otherworldly trip-hop album, rivaled by none.

This, though I would call it illbient more than trip-hop. Nevertheless, Endtroducing... is a legendary piece of work and should appeal.

Here are some of my favorites. There's some variety here, some more downtempo or pop-oriented than others, but all on the melancholic trip-hop (female-fronted) side of the style.
I would've included Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain, so since it's mentioned, I'll second that!
Along with Goldfrapp, Emiliana Torrini and Shelley Harland released their moodiest, best trip-hop early on. Spylab has a dark, spy-film/noir vibe that takes a lot from Portishead. Terranova is along the Tricky/Massive Attack lines; excellent stuff. Laika, Swandive and Crustation created some great highlights in the genre and are more overlooked than I think they should be. Bitstream Dream are a remix collective that made some fantastic tracks with Jenna Ferone and Anji Bee, each with excellent works to their name as well. Some of these Bitstream tracks give me that Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) feeling.
