I'm looking for some amazing albums as a whole, concept albums mostly.
I don't care how heavy or not heavy it is, but I'm not a huge death metal fan.

All I can stand from Katatonia is Dance of December Souls, it's an amazing album, but everything else they've done is crap to me..

Regarding concept albums, you can't go wrong with Angra's Temple of Shadows, it's out of this world.

The King Diamond albums are really good, if you like the vocals. They seem to be a bit of love/hate.

And I can't answer you sidequestion as I haven't listened to all bands.

Maybe you'll like Nightingale, Dan Swano's Melodic Heavy Metal band

All of their albums are part of the "Breathing Shadow" story, and the band has a very nice Progressive/Classic Rock vibe sound

since you mention Pink Floyd, chances aren't bad that you will maybe like Marillion, too... In the era with their lead singer Fish (my fave Marillion era btw) there are some conceptual albums which really go deep (at least for me), namely these two:

"Misplaced Childhood":
The excellent, often moving lyrics give an account of loneliness, lost love, substance abuse, the shallowness of fame, man's inhumanity to man, and -- most poignantly of all -- a longing for the lost innocence of childhood.

"Clutching at straws":
The character of Torch (supposedly a descendant of the Jester from earlier album sleeves) is a 29 year old out-of-work man whose life is a mess. He seeks comfort mostly in alcohol to numb himself. He is trying, but failing, to forget what lies at his feet—a failed marriage, being a deadbeat father, and his lack of commercial success as a singer in a band. As he gets drunk, he also writes about his surroundings and his laments. Since Torch has no other real outlet at his disposal, he ends up in bars, hotel rooms, and on the road, screaming and drunk, thus, he is described as beyond redemption or hope.

after Fish left, a new singer ( Steve Hogarth ) joined Marillion and after some albums with him the concept album "Brave" (btw ranked among the best 30 concept albums of all time) was released:

Brave is a concept album, based on a news story Steve Hogarth heard on the radio about a girl who was taken into police custody after being found wandering the Severn Bridge. She did not know who she was, where she came from and refused to even speak. This inspired Hogarth to write a fictional story about this girl and what might have led to her being on the Severn Bridge in this state.

Also a 55 minutes long movie (so to say a 55 min music video) was filmed and this makes the concept story even more deep...

oh, and seconding Nightingale - a really fantastic band with a flawless discography!

You could try The Devin Townsend Project. It exists of four albums about Devin Townsend's journey through his musical life. And every album is done in another music style.

Cradle of Filth's "biography" albums.
E.G. Cruelty And The Beast, Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder and Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa.

I may get some shit for saying this, but Godspeed was one of the most touching and interesting albums I've ever heard, and the story is fucking great. Cruelty And The Beast is also quite good, but not as much for stories, it focuses too much on gore and not enough on Bathory's story. Darkly was an improvisational story mixed in with Mythology, but it was a very good one.

The reason Godspeed is my favorite is because it is atmospheric to the biggest extent and tries to tie the music in with lyrics at emotional points. (A good example of this is Darkness Incarnate, the outro with "Who Steers The Spears So Frightfall")

Also some other good ones are Obscura's Cosmogenesis and Omnivium. Obscura is planning to release 4 albums with this concept of creation of existence, destruction of existence, and so forth. Cosmogenesis was the destruction where Omnivium was the creation. Creepy instruments used to the fullest extent to give a truly Obscure environment and you can visualize yourself in the environments while reading the lyrics quite easily in both albums.

I think you would enjoy Cybion by Kalisia, its a prog/death sci-fi concept album that is just phenomenal. Also Mabool by Orphaned Land is a hebrew folk metal concept album about the great flood. I'd give each of those records a full listen.

Novembers Doom's The Pale Haunt Departure is an amazing concept album that I'm sure you'd love when it comes to lyrics, the only thing for you to worry about is that it's Doom/Death but I think Kuhr's powerful and comprehensive growls will be easy for you to digest.
Basically the story is about a father who dies but doesn't leave the world, yet he remains there and watches over his loved ones (His son specifically, if I remember correctly). The album starts with his father feeling careful and devoted to his son which slowly evolves into paranoia and finally into madness and violence. (Shamelessly stolen from Empyreal's review bcoz I'm too lazy to find my own adjectives)

W.A.S.P - The Crimson Idol

It's a hugely deep and emotional journey, made more profound by the fact that it's so set in the human world. The songs are epic and range from sadness of great depth to manic, bitter-sweet fast-songs, much like the ups and downs of the rockstar lifestyle which the album speaks of. It's one of my favourite concept albums, and indeed albums in general.

Please listen to Hammers of Misfortune's The Bastard album. In my opinion the best concept album out there, resembling a Shakespearean tragedy, but thankfully no one has dissected the album so you can formulate your own story-lines and meanings behind the album. Check it out, here's a song to get you lured in (mind the instrumental intro which is still awesome):
As you will see it is also very musically intact as well, and has the perfect sound style to compliment the theme of the album.

I haven't heard Jon Olivia's Pain, but his vocals as well as his songwriting were AMAZING in the pre-Cris-RIP Savatage days...there were some better than excellent songs on both Gutter Ballet and Hall of the Mountain King..now that I know he's not dead too I'll have to check it out. (An interesting side note-Matt La Porte, his guitarist, died on 4/20 of last year from what is speculated, but not confirmed to be, heart failure. At least they weren't related, I guess.) I fully confess, right away, that I have NO IDEA what to call the music I dig (it all used to be "metal" or "not metal")....but these are a few albums that I dig: Savatage "Hall..King" as I said; Tool "Lateralus"; Helloween "Keeper of the Seven Keys parts 1 and 2" are both great; Dream Theater "A Change of Seasons", Testament "The Ritual"; and for a good mood Extreme "pornograffiti" and one that I love in the concept album category is SO NOT METAL: ICP "The Great Milenko"! I don't especially like anything else they do. If you throw on some excellent headphones and KNOW how to use your equalizer the metal albums stun you with the musicianship on em. The ICP album in spite being "rap" has excellent rhythm and while it is humorous and violent (juggalo) it is also cynical, psychological, and the final song on it is well, dare I say "uplifting?" These are the ones ANY jackass can get. But my FAVORITE ALBUM is almost impossible to get. It's "The Adventures of Johnny Flamehead" by a local Vegas band! Every song describes a train of thought I've ridden and are based on a central storyline (Operation Mindcrime style ya know?) Happy to hook you up if you're interested, but not gonna infringe on any copyrights in a public forum

To answer your Shadow Gallery question I can also answer your first question: 'Tyranny' and 'Room V'. They are both concept albums covering the same story. 'Carved in Stone' is another great album of theirs, though it isn't a concept album. Shadow Gallery is a marvelous band and you should give them dollars.

For Katatonia, I would say... 'Tonight's Decision' and 'Brave Murder Day'. I would also say every single one of their albums, though.

For a rather murky but emotional concept album, you might enjoy 'A Pleasant Shade of Grey' by Fates Warning. It doesn't sound much like any of their other albums, and is not one of my favorites of theirs, but it was the first album I got of theirs that I immediately enjoyed (I was young, and did not yet realize that 'Awaken the Guardian' owns everything in sight).

Since Blind Guardian's my favorite band, I have to recommend 'Nightfall in Middle-Earth'. It might not be 'deep', but it is certainly amazing, and emotional within its framework.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

An album which is comparable to "The Wall" is WASP's "The Crimson Idol". No, really. It's a very similar work in the total thematic scope. A searing and personal satire/docudrama of society and the place of the fame stricken creative and sensitive mind within it. A masterpiece.

I'd recommend Gretchen Goes To Nebraska for your King's X request. Great concept about spirituality and faith, and it manages to work in Christian themes without being preachy. Out of the Silent Planet is an amazing album too, though it isn't a concept album.
