I'm not quite there monetarily, but I'm lookin' for some new cymbals. I have three Sabian crashes: 18" AA Metal-X, 19" & 20" Sabian Vaults. I realized after buying the two Vaults that they don't match very well with the Metal-X, but they were so beautiful that I used them anyways. The 20" is so dark and loud, but still has some nice glassy overtones (not too glassy, like A Customs). Well, anyways, they're all destroyed now. Now I need to make sure I get some crashes that will withstand the test of time. There are obviously the Z Customs/Z3's, but those things have almost NO range.

Right now I'm leaning towards something from Istanbul's Traditional line, but I'm still not sure...

New drum set day!

I've been in dire need for a new kit for about 4-5 years now. I've been playing a Tama Artstar ES kit since 1999. I've gotten them to sound pretty good, but the sizes and overall tone are not to my liking (they are cannons-11X12, 12X13, 16X16, 18X18 toms, 7X14 brass snare, (2) 18X22 kicks). I needed a kit that would sound good for both metal and rock. At rehearsal spaces, the kits I've played have way shallower toms, and I've found those to my liking with their clearer, less ring-y attack.

So I've been saving my money for a while (not necessarily for drums; I've actually been saving my cash in anticipation of being fired. Turns out I actually got a promotion and raise), and I had a surplus. I realized that now was the time. I played a bunch of kits and the one that stood out to me, even with the stock heads on the floor model, was a Gretsch Catalina Ash. So I plunked down for this kit in ocean blue fade:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/44837926@N04/sets/72157626463959162/

The sizes are 8X7, 10X8, 12X9, 14X14 toms, 5X14 matching wood snare, and 20X22 kick. I've fitted them with Remo heads: Ambassador X coated and clear Ambassadors on the toms, Powerstroke X Coated with dot and Emperor clear hazy on the snare, and Powerstroke Pro clear on the kick (I kept the stock Gretsch logo head and cut an 8" soundhole). Even after a quick stretch and initial tuning, these thing sound awesome! The ash wood is loud, clear, and attach heavy. My cymbals aren't pictured, but I'm still playing my Zildjians: 14" Z Custom New Beat hi-hats, 15" A Custom crash, 16" A crash, 22" Z Custom Mega Bell ride, 18" Edge china, 8" A splash, 6" Zilbell.

My band Dark Sacrament has a gig on the 19th of this month and I am foaming at the mouth to get these out there and 'road" test 'em!

EDIT: I must've done something wrong with the image links; I've replaced 'em with a link to my Flickr set with the pics of the new kit.

Hey all, I recently just got an Epro Live set with the plastic cymbals for apartment playing. Anybody else have one of these? If so, what are your thoughts? I'm a drummer of four years. I play metal ( thrash, Groove, Heavy Metal), Metalcore , Jazz , blues and alt rock.

The Peral EPro's? I saw these when I went to pick up my new kit and sat behind 'em; they are surprisingly realistic. Felt close to an acoustic kit. Above average sound samples. And the sales guy told me that you can actually replace the trigger pads with real heads and use 'em as an acoustic kit.

A novel concept, but hardly worth the $3300.00 tag. Depends on how you use 'em; do you plan on gigging in addition to practicing with them? If I was going to have an e-kit strictly for the purpose of quiet apartment playing, with no intention of taking them to gigs, then I'd go as cheaply as possible. If I was giging with 'em, then maybe these might be the way to go, as they look pretty much like a real kit. Overall a bit pricey, but that's me.

My band and I, are about to make pre-production of our Demo, but since we want to do something really simple, we want to use a drum programming software, so which is the best and more realistic sounding software for that task??

I would say, Addictive Drums. The only problem with this program is that it is being used by many many many others.

I'm quite a great drummer as well. My set-ups are quite simple. I own four drumsets.

My leisure-time set includes three toms, a floor tom, a snare, a hi-hat, a crash, a china, and ride. It has two bass drums.

My most commonly used band set includes four toms, two floor toms, three snares, a set of congas and other percussion, a splash, a snare, a hi-hat, six crashes, and two rides. It also had a china, but I broke it a couple weeks ago. It has two bass drums.

My set I use for drum dueling with my drummer pals includes one tom, a floor tom, a snare, a hi-hat, and two crashes. It has one bass drum.

A random set I rarely use includes two toms, two floor toms, a snare, two crashes, a ride, and two splashes. It has two bass drums.

I play right-handed and ambi, often switching my hi-hat hand. I often use the double ride technique that includes two rides and double kicks. I hit the crashes quite uniquely, with the lower middle of the sticks, to give a darker, less "HERE-I-AM" sound. I mainly use Zidjian cymbals and Tama toms, along with other assorted equipment.

Vitek (RIP) from Decapitated - his drumming was extremely superb, please do yourself a favour and give it a listen. Also check out Dave Lombardo (our Master!), Steve Asheim (lord of metal drumming!), Flo Mounier, King Fowley and .... jeez there are so many out there! I can't possibly mention ALL the metal drumming greats on this post. For that my brothers and sisters in Metal will help me out :)

Hello,
I have been playing drums for a few years now, just as a hobby, and was invited to play with a local band a few days ago. Problem is, I don't have my own kit, I just used a buddies to play around and practice on. I'm looking into electric kits since I really lack the space for an acoustic kit (the only reason I don't have my own kit to begin with), and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations? I'm new to electric kits and really don't know anything about them.
Thanks for the help ahead of time.

I think I just got the ankle motion for high speed double bass, but how do you manage to keep it going? Do I just need to practice? My style is kind of like Flo Mounier's.

I'm seriously thinking of learning to play drums, but I don't know much about it. Are there any tips you guys could share with me? And what exactly, from a drummers perspective, makes a good drummer? I want to learn drums because I'm always tapping my fingers for one, lol, and because of all the instruments, I think that it's most flexible, you can play almost any genre of music with it, but from my understanding, good drummers are hard to find. There's a million people who can play guitar, but a really good drummer seems to be very valuable and hard to replace.

Last Friday I played in my first gig ever. It was with the group I've been collaborating with recently, Pandora's Toybox. Below is the entire show in four parts. The band members are listed in the first video and the titles for each song are shown when the song is about to start. I hope you all enjoy.

Does anybody have any tips for gravity blasting? I for the most part have it down but there isn't very much clarity between the notes and kind of ends up sounding like one long snare note (?).

Like many other things, I think the best way is to slow it down until you can play the notes clearly to a metronome (or as much as you can, if not... I know you need momentum for gravity blasting, so if it's too slow you wont be able to do it anyway), and bump it up 10 BPM. Once you can do it at that speed cleanly, bump it up again, etc etc.

Ah nice.
I need to fix that problem myself actually, my left hand has a different grip than my right, due to the way I play. O.o
I tend to hold the left hand stick by the very edge (and the right not too far from that either actually). Makes it hard to even do double strokes, truth be told.

I'm kind of in the same position, since I'm self taught I held the sticks like a downy when I started playing and had horrible technique. My dad enrolled me in four lessons and the guy wasn't able to teach me anything but how shittily I was holding the sticks. Now my right hand is fast as hell but only recently have I been able to hold the stick with my left hand like I do in my right. I walk around with a gripmaster all the time to strengthen the fingers on my left hand so my blasts are even on both sides. Also recently I've been doing all my blasts with one foot.

That's the one that I own. I think it's medium tension, but mine doesn't have the black rubber thing. My friend has this ridiculously rigid one, http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5 ... SL210_.jpg.

These things are a drummer's best friend.

Any Sabian crash/china cymbal recs for death metal? I am currently looking at a 19" Paragon china cymbal for $150. I might want one more china and two crashes.

Anyone in Los Angeles available to join a band? I am in an established death metal band that just moved to Los Angeles, we are looking for a drummer, no older than 24.

Damascus - www.facebook.com/deathspiralz

FYI we are about to release material with our most recent drummer that is a bit more intense drum-wise (speed, blast beats, etc.) than what you hear on our facebook.

dude's I'm looking for some cool songs to drum along with. Criteria for songs:

1)I've just started out, so nothing crazy complex, although rec-ing AC/DC is unnecessarily simple.
2) I Don't have a double kick
3) Ideally, the stuff I'm finding most fun to play with (currently) is doom and classic stuff. Stuff that grooves, or has big riffs that I can wail on. There's also a few songs I've got where there's a chance to sort of improvise (i.e stuff with heaps of room for fills) which I'm digging to.
4) Any songs with weird offbeat beats, slightly odd time sigs, or stuff that involves both hands being constantly used would be cool to.
5) Any tempo is all good.. unless if it's super hard, yeah.

I'm not sure what your price range is but I have the Roland TD-12 and it's amazing to play on, the mesh heads are great, as are the cymbals. If you are going to be playing live with your band then I assume having an electric kit could cause some problems and with the high price of a quality electric kit you could buy an incredible acoustic kit. If you don't have the room then that's fair enough - I bought the Roland mainly due to neighbours complaining about noise and I can play late into the night with my headphones on!

If you have any other questions then feel free to send me a private message.

I can only speak for myself of course but I consider a good drummer to have superb timing (obviously) and a great sense of rhythm as in many ways they are the driving force of many bands. Another thing which I personally value highly in a drummer is feel - something which if overlooked can make even great drumming sound emotionless and boring. When starting out a great thing to do is put in your headphones and play along to some easy songs you know well and also another thing which greatly helps is start off playing, lets say, a regular 4/4 beat and then add in little fills and things which make it interesting and harder. Obviously you can expand on this and you'll find with consistent practice that your skill will rapidly increase.

Check out ''The Spirit Carries On'' on YouTube. It documents Dream Theater looking for a replacement drummer and they go in-depth on what they are looking for and value in a drummer.

Pantera - Cowboys From Hell < Has some nice offbeats and is extremely fun to play along with
System Of A Down - Toxicity
System Of A Down - Chop Suey < Two popular songs for people to cover and play, great for learning - especially Toxicity
Alice In Chains - Rain When I Die < Some great fills and offbeats, has a great groove feel in parts
Alice Cooper - Feed My Frankenstein < Odd choice I know but it's a great song to improvise with and one I have played along with countless times so I had to recommend it :P
Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

Those are some good songs to get you started, sorry I couldn't help more but looking through my music I realised that most of it either has extremely simple or over-the-top drumming.

DRUMMING MUTE PADS !!! do they work contemplating buying some. I have a kit in the basement and want to know if ther worth the money. for example would someone upstairs be able to comfortably watch television if I was playing with these things??? cheers!

They definitely do work, it just sounds like you're hitting a piece of rubber - no echo or anything and it's not loud even when playing hard as I tend to do. If sound is an issue I would recommend them for sure, I used to have them on my Pearl kit before I invested in an electric so I could play all night long undisturbed!

Pretty much anything off of Oceanic by Isis is a blast to play on drums. Same with Panopticon. The beats are fairly simple, but have some cool details to zoom in on, and leave you a lot of room to throw your own fills into the mix. And I know I don't have to tell you how good the riffs are.

yeah I've been having a heap of fun playing Grinning Mouths (just beating the shit out of the snare with that MAGISTRATES DREAM OF PLAGUE section) and Backlit's a blast too. Oceanic's actually a fair bit harder than it looks (that whacky hi hat thing on Hymn?) I'll probably give Celestial a look at some point, too.

The stuff from Celestial is actually harder for me to play, just because those songs sit on the same riff for really long periods of time, so I tend to get a bit lost. Not knocking the quality of that record though.

i reckon stuff from mosquito control could be fun to play as well, I dig that frantic fill heavy shit. Whether I can do it justice yet or not is another thing...

My favorite drummers are: Hannes Grossman (necrophagist, obscura), John Longstreth (origin, dimak), Matte Modin (dark funeral, defleshed, sportlov), And this is kind of fucked, I'm trying to find out who did the drums for gorgasm and I've seen all kinds of names like: Tom Pilasiewicz, Kyle Christman, Tom Pilasiewicz, Derek Hoffman, Terrence Manauis, Dave Culross...So I don't really know who credit on that one but Masticate to dominate and bleeding profusely are insane.

I love Gorgasm and that style of grind/blasting like old decrepit birth. Tim yeung did ...and time begins, but his other shit sucks imo... k.c howard did a great job but not in to the newer Decrepit birth stuff.

It hits the spot when blasts are the constant rhythm but they change tempos slightly and switch between the hammer blast and euro blast and bomb blast. I'm not sure what style that is, it's death metal sounding, but the riffing and drumming is a lot more 'adhd', stop n' start like 20 times a song kind of like grindcore or powerviolence but a slight goregrind/porngrind influence...I don't know what the hell to call it, but it's sick as fuck.

I'm referring to bands like: Disgorge (both of em), decrepit birth- ...and time begins, Defeated Sanity, Putrid Pile, Suffocate bastard... this drummer rules: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp441TRm ... re=related (Thorsten Bertram) http://www.metal-archives.com/artists/T ... tram/46713
