Peste Noire - Probably the best French black metal band out there. The music is sardonic, disgusting and strangely cheerful. They have changed a lot over the years, though, so check out the demos and their first full-length (La Sanie) if you want more orthodox black metal, and their later albums for sick, crazy stuff.

Songs:
Phalènes et Pestilence - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrqSy911cGk
Paysage Mauvais - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEIKZS_7H3M
La Condi Hu - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck3CNXSbbpc

Kawir - A very underrated band that is, in my opinion, the best to come out of Greece metal-wise. They're a pagan black metal band that improves pretty much with every release. As such, their latest two full-lengths, Arai and Ophiolatreia, are probably the most worthwhile. Especially Ophiolatreia is one of the best black metal albums to come out in the past few years. Their lyrics are largely in Ancient Greek.

Songs:
Poseidon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh697g2jPXg
Sword of Dardanus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7M_fWWLiYc

Zemial - Another Greek metal band, yet this one plays in the old Bathory style. It's a one-man project by Vorskaath, and basically all of his music is one big hommage to Bathory. That's not to say that Zemial is a mere tribute band, though; especially the later releases feature some truly excellent compositions, and especially when it comes to drums & percussion, Vorskaath is a great musician. I highly recommend the In Monumentum album.

Songs:
For A Fallen One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWi-CHmF4Jg
Words from the Temple of Shadows - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWkpUW3S_wM

Agatus - This is a project by Eskarth, who is actually the brother of Vorskaath from Zemial. Agatus plays a faster style of black metal with a bigger influence on melody, even going as far as incorporating elements from power metal. Agatus has two full-lengths released to date, which are nearly 10 years apart, so they're quite different but both worth it.

Songs:
Conqueror of Fear - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgTQz-6L8dg
King of the Forest - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvMNobXw ... re=related

Fleurety - I haven't heard their newer, much more experimental work, but their debut album, Min Tid Skal Komme from 1995, really is a hidden gem within the genre. It has weird, Pink Floyd-ish compositions with Burzum-like vocals and well-placed female session vocals.

Song:
En Skikkelse I Horisonten - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn-_JKqQNeg

Triste Sir - A really obscure band from France that plays pure black metal that is both melodic and raw. If you can get a hold of their demo tape 'Royaume Perdu', I suggest getting it as it's a fine piece of raw yet melodic black metal with a melancholic touch. The problem, though is, that their releases are very limited and not easy to find at all.

Wolfsmond - Raw, old-school German black metal with an awesome sound. Their first album, Des Düsterwaldes Reigen, is a must-own if you like the Thuringian black metal style.

Song:
Wo der Tod allein thront - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AupbYp8TxO4

There, that about sums up the stuff I've been listening to lately. I hope you at least end up loving some of these bands.

With the exception of Peste Noire, nice list. Nothing wrong with P.N., but they are fairly well known.

New additions;

Drastus, fans of Darkspace will enjoy this band, sort of trippy and hypnotic. They should have more listeners.

Wolfhetan, Killer German black metal, similar to Ulver's earlier material. Why they are not more well known is beyond me.

Ascension, again from Germany. Getting some attention these days, but worthy of more.

Maanelyst, newer project of former Carpathian Forest member J. Nordavind. No links available to offer up samples, but do try and find a copy (or download) of the "Splitdemon Vol. 1", it's all the best parts of early Carpathian Forest, minus Nattefrost's gayness.

Thanks. As for well-known; some of the examples listed by OP are arguably even better-known, such as Isengard and Nargaroth, so I thought I'd add them.

EPIC (hate this use of the word) THREAD!

So much to check out, bookmarking this page.

Maybe Im mistaken but I couldn't see Funeral Mist anywhere here.

Funeral Mist: agressive swedish bm with very unique vocals. Think schrieks, talking, whispering, shouting, gargling, echoed, with effects and so on and so on. Very untraditional and fucking amazing. This singer Arioch (Daniel Rostén) uses the name Mortus when performing with Marduk, but although raising the quality of their music, cant really be compared to his work in Funeral Mist.

But even if you would strip this vocals from the music (its really so fucking good that I view Funeral Mist as vocal-driven in the same way as much pop music) you still have some VERY crushing and brutal bm here. Blazing riffs, sick drumsound and performance (the snare changes sound depending on if it is blasting or not).

Its not constant blasting like Marduks Panzer Division Marduk or your grindcore, but close to it.

The album Salvation is a must.

Check this song out from that album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hmX6H3Hy5o (read lyrics while listening for completly taking the vocals in http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/funeralmist/salvation.html#1)

Damn, I actually forgot to mention Rutonkantaja, a sideproject of Wyrd.
Their band is amazing.

Well, I haven't been here a while, but apparently I've found a band named Licht Erlischt - supposedly depressive black, but it really isn't. Clean and buzzing guitars, great melodies...

An also rather interesting band is Nonexistence - Nihil.
Review to album, because I couldn't find a youtube link to Serenity

Another fairly new black metal band with neoclassical elements, Wilds Forlorn.

ALL HAIL THEE !!

They comprehend BM in a very unique way.. listen to their debut, 'Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult'.. simply love Dagon's goat-like vocals plus the guitariffs and Incubus's drumming.
His drumming style on this reminds me of what Fenriz did on 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky'.. sounds very similar to me..

Anyways, enjoy Inquisition while you can..

this one's from Poland - pure BM - a must!!! Their melodic patterns resonate of Gontyna Kry's Welowie (if you know). Underground dwellers.

Plaga - Plaga (Demo) '09

Track - Trąby Zagłady (Trumpets of Doom)

A few samples of "ethnic" black metal:

Olde English: Winterfylleth, Wodensthrone
Estonian: Manatark, Sõjaruun, Bestia
Lithuanian: Obtest
Irish: Primordial

Unfortunately I haven't kept track of the black metal scene in a while, but I figured this was an amazing thread, therefore I revive it.

Has anyone encountered any new amazing black metal people should know of?

I've been recommended Watain a number of times, for example.
