Henri Sorvali ( FINNTROLL / MOONSORROW ):
"The spirit of the Basque lives strongly on Aiumeen Basoa. With the progressive approach and excellent production on their traditional music- meets- Black Metal I can only kneel in front of such soulful album as this. The Gods have truly spoken via *Iraganeko Bide Malkartsutik*."

Dan Swano ( EDGE OF SANITY / NIGHTINGALE / MOONTOWER... ):
"Excellent stuff. Superb musicianship! The softer parts are among the best I have ever heard in a Folk/Metal band"

More to come!

(Self Released)
Release Date: 2010
Origin: Spain

The debut album of Ilbeltz is finally out. This band from Basque Country isn’t new at all! It exists from 1995 and if the name reminds something to some of you, it is because Ilbeltz participated in the 3-way split “Triarchy of Vasconia” in 2001, together with Aiumeen Basoa and Adhur. Until the release of the split the band was very active with gigs, but after that they stopped. In the meantime they composed some songs and now in 2010 they finally released their first full-length album.

“Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian – We’re Struggling on the Waves” can be described as folk pagan metal, but it definitely isn’t the typical album of the genre!
There are 5 songs, all of them over 12 minutes long, while the album lasts for 69 minutes. The band explores many different sounds and each song contains many genres.
They move from black, heavy and power metal, to folk, Celtic and traditional native Basque acoustic music, even with some renaissance references.
The band has a raw sound, paying more attention to create a “real” and live feeling, rather than a perfectly “polished” studio album. This works for them since the nature of their music allows it, but I have to admit that some acoustic instruments could be played a little better… It is very difficult to recognize any particular structures in the compositions and the band seems to improvise; no bridges, refrains or catchy parts to repeat… Even if there are many changes inside the songs, they somehow manage to retain the same folk Basque atmosphere throughout the whole album.

Their lyrics are in their native language, but there are translations in the booklet. They are based on the novel “Xenda bi ez Duk Lizentzi” written by the band’s mastermind Ibai Mendinueta, who also composed all the music and it deals with an epic story that takes place in the 16th century. These tales about conquering and adventures related to the seas are perfectly portrayed on their music that speaks on its own even if you can’t understand the lyrics! Of course this alone says a lot about the work behind this album!
The extended use of traditional instruments helps the band to build this unique atmosphere, as well as the use of their unusual native language in a very “folk” way. Some of the melodies are actually based on authentic 16th century traditional songs and they help the band to transfer us back in time! I would also like to comment the clean vocals that are very expressive and with a very personal touch.

Overall I would say the Ilbeltz is a very special band that fans of folk metal in general must definitely check. Even if they are mostly described as folk pagan black metal band, their black elements aren’t that dominant.
Most of the time they play folk metal (mainly power) and acoustic folk music. I think they could have a better sound, but I have to recognize that they created a very personal album and I am really looking forward for their next step! The level of the album is very good, but there are some moments that are really excellent! So I am hoping (and expecting) that they can make something better and more solid in the future. You can visit their myspace page to listen to the whole first song (14:20 mins)
and contact the band if you want to buy “Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian”: http://www.myspace.com/ilbeltzofficial

Rating: 8,5/10

Second review for the Ilbeltz album on the Arghura Fanzine Vol 8:

Quote:
Ilbeltz: 1598 Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian

Ilbeltz - Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I) (2010)

I speak no lie nor tell any tale when I say that I've been waiting nine years for this album. Ilbeltz, the Basque country folk metal band, first came to my attention back in 2001 through their split release with fellow countrymen, Adhur and Aiumeen Basoa, and during these past nine years I've constantly played that split release, never once getting sick of it, but deep down inside longing for more than those three songs that Ilbeltz had on that split. About six months ago, 'Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I)' was self-released and when I found out about it I stopped everything I was doing and instantly ordered it. A week or so later it arrived, and finally, nine long years of waiting had been fulfilled. I was absolutely enthralled with what I heard coming out of my speakers.

For those that don't know, The Basque Country is a region spanning an area in northeastern Spain and southwestern France. Euskara, their language is spoken by 25.7% of Basques in all territories, of these, 614,000 live in the Spanish part of the Basque country and the remaining 51,800 live in the French part. This is key to point out, because Ilbeltz's music very clearly shows influence from their native culture and music, in fact they even write all of their lyrics and song titles in Euskara. The lyrics themselves are based on, 'Xenda bi ez duk lizentzi' a novel wrote by Ilbeltz mastermind, Ibai Mendinueta. The novel centers around the adventures of a Basque pirate named, Potrobizargorri, and although the English translation for each song is provided in the booklet, I haven't read through them yet as I feared it might slightly ruin some part of this album for me.

Musically Ilbeltz could be described as simply folk metal, but I'd seriously be short changing them if I left it at that. Essentially they are about 15% black metal, 10% heavy metal, 25% progressive and 50% traditional Basque folk music. Although just five songs appear on this album the shortest is eleven minutes, while the longest is sixteen, clocking in for a grand total of nearly seventy minutes of music between the five songs. This may sound like an insane stretch, but Ibai is quite talented at writing interesting instrumental parts during these songs and most of these instrumental sections are within a folk/acoustic style, which usually segue back and fourth from the metal and progressive parts. The singing is performed in mainly a cleanly sung manner, but additionally usage of a backing choir is present, as well as several guest vocalists who sing in a variety of other ways, even a few black metal styled screams.

Naturally for a folk band several instruments are used on this recording. From the usual heavy metal set up we also see the presence of various flutes, accordion, oboe, acoustic guitars, violins and several traditional Basque instruments, all of which make their appearance during both the metal, prog and folk moments of this record.

While I do love this album in its full form, I must admit the lead off song, 'Subak Ixeinttu Itxasotako Udek' is absolutely mesmerizing. It has in my opinion the perfect mix of black metal blasting dissonance mixed with melodious heavy metal riffs and absolutely gorgeous folk melodies. In fact the last four minutes of this song are quite honestly four of the most outstanding minutes in music I've ever heard. Interestingly each of these five songs have moments like this which for me are just absolutely breathtaking in their execution and magnificence.

It's a rarity to hear music this good, but when you do hear stuff like this you know you'll take it inside and not let it go. I've been following Ilbeltz for nine years now and although they only have two releases during all these years I can easily say I'll never let this band go. They mean that much to me. Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I) is absolutely exquisite folk influenced metal art!

In the end I find no fault in this recording whatsoever, except for the fact that the band is unsigned, which I realize isn't from any wrongdoing on the band, but it's just unthinkable that such a great band is going unnoticed by the masses. If any justice truly existed in this world, Ilbeltz would be huge, they would tour with bands like Moonsorrow and Finntroll and they would completely destroy them too, but instead Ilbeltz is almost completely unknown in the folk metal genre...

As a final word, all I can really say is this is one of the finest folk metal recordings I've personally heard, as it does exactly what you'd expect folk metal to do: It blends folk music and heavy metal perfectly. Watch the video below and see what you've been missing out on:

All I can say about both albums is that are unquestionable masterpieces, both works are original, have fantastically composed and arranged songs and the lyrics are very interesting. A must have for every fan of folk metal!!!

For me, 2010 was a year of unheralded firsts, a year where many new and often unsigned acts cut a swathe through my top ten list and the usual big name stalwarts were left glaring in the wings. And for me, black metal was surprisingly prevalent. Entrails? Arkheth? The Makai? Norse? Aiumeen Basoa? Who the fuck are these guys? Well, get to know them, as they produced some of 2010′s best metal.

6. Aiumeen Basoa - Iraganeko Bide Malkartsutik

Auime–what? Iraqanko bide- huh? I’ve owned this album for 6 months and still have no idea what these Basque folk/black metallers are talking about. Needless to say though, when you beat out the likes of Equilibrium, Kivimetstan Druidi, FInntroll, Heathen Foray and Heidevolk for the years best folk metal album, who cares. Brilliant, ambitious and beautiful this new act is sure to stay on my radar for the next few years.

2010 – A look back

What a year. It’s been tumultuous, heartbreaking and joyous in equal measure, solidifying the perspective that you cannot appreciate the highs as much without encountering the lows. Luckily for me not many, if any albums let me down this year, and whilst I would say that heavy music has reach an apex of sorts (as it did at the tail end of the 90s), I think (and hope) that in the next two-three years we’ll see the next waves of luminaries emerge that are going to destroy, erase and improve the paradigms of the music we all love.

Here’s to 2011

Bitter End – Guilty As Charged

Reviews for Ilbeltz's Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folk and pirate tales? yes, it works. - 85%
Written by Paganbasque on October 11th, 2010

Last May will be remembered as a fruitful month in the pagan metal scene of the Basque Country, mainly because at the same day that Aiumeen Basoa released its breathtaking first opus another highly interesting basque folkloric band released it debut. Ilbeltz, the main project of the keyboardist and accordionist Ibai(also member of Aiumeen basoa) had launched its own myspace some months ago and had announced the release of “Auskan Gabiltz Olatu Gainian“, an information that unfortunately remained a mystery for me until the day that the auto produced work saw the light. “Auskan Gabiltz Olatu Gainian” is a very different approach to pagan/folk metal if we compare it to Aiumen Basoan´s debut, it’s much more based on the folk side and less progressive, not being so influenced by different styles as Aiumeen’s music is. Ilbeltz´s first opus focuses on the folk instruments creating quite long compositions where the metal parts are sometimes residual, expecting one song where black metal influences are clearer. This album has only five songs but its length exceeds the hour, this detail clearly shows Ibai´s ability to creat long instrumental sections in order to enhance the atmosphere which is closely related to the concept of the album. “Auskan Gabiltz Olatu Gainian” is part of a trilogy based on the adventures of a basque pirate called Potrobizargorri and the lyrics are sung in a dialect of the basque language. Because of this, everything in this album, lyrics, folk melodies and singing style, evokes the Cantabric Sea and the typical sounds that you can relate to pirate tales.

The album commences with “Subak Itxeintu Itxasotake Udek” which is arguable one of the best songs of the album, with a furious initial drum blasting which is cutted dramatically after no more than two minutes. From this moment we perceible clearly Ibeltz´s distinctive style, clean vocals sang in a very folkloric way acompained by acoustic guitars and flutes, these soft sections are the unquestionable protagonists of the album being absolutely excellent, but the album gains a lot when the metal parts are introduced in the form of very heavy guitars with notable melodies, also being accompanied by an accordion or a flute, these moments where both styles are combined are the best ones, from my point of view in the next releases this aspect should be develoved and extended. “Maiñel Moxkortiyarena” is, by far, the heaviest song, with lots of blast-beats and raspy vocals (made by Aiumeen Basoa´s vocalist), the melodies are, once again, influenced by traditional heavy metal, anyway clean vocals and folk arrangements are not absent and claim for its quote of protagonism in the calmer moments of this song.”Helduiak Buztanetio motel!” is the song which less convinces me, the initial traditional melody doesn´t fit with the rest of the compositon, the song is quite soft and repetitive at times and the combination of metal and folk(when it exits) doesn’t work as well as in other parts of the cd. The homonym song is the longest composition, and in consecuence the most elaborated one, the folkish melodies are awesome and though I miss more hardness and some shriek vocals I consider this piece of music a very inspired effort, the combined guitar/folk parts are addictive and very catchy and Ibai´s autoctonus singing style is quite impressive. The album finalizes with “Potrobizargorri, pirada ondraua”, another long composition which doesn’t differ too mucho from the rest of the album, more long folk sections combined with few metal parts, in thi case too few in my opinion.

All in all, we can consider this debut as a great album though it suffers from some minor mistakes, as the lack of more metal parts and the humble production. In my opinion for the next releases a deeper and more balanced mixture of metal and folk parts should be depeloved in order to perfectionate Ilbeltz´s particual view of folk metal. Anyway the authenticity and awesome folk melodies of “Auskan Gabiltz Olatu Gainian” are over these imperfections and make Ibeltz´s first effort an outstanding debut, which is extremely catchy and addictive. Highly recommended.

Thanks Paganbasque!

An interesting 3-way split is released by the French label Antiq. “D’Anjou En Vasconie – La Très Grande Chasse D’Hellequin” includes only 3 songs, one of each band, but it lasts for over 41 minutes, since each song is very long. Ilbeltz come from Spain, while Hanternoz and Anceisural Eritance come from France. This album is based on an ancient story that takes place around Brittany. Each band has done its own interpretation about it.

The first song “Gauaren Babes Tenkian, Burdibagaz Haraindi” is from Ilbeltz. Ilbeltz is a folk metal band formed back in 1995 and is actually the personal project of Ibai Mendinueta, with various session members. After the split “Triarchy of Vasconia” in 2001, they released their first full-length “Auskan Gabiltz Olatun Gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I)” in 2010. And while in their first steps there where some black metal elements in their music, now they buried them in the past. This 16 minutes song has by far the most professional production in this split. They combine acoustic folk music and epic heavy metal (with an 80′s aesthetic) all seen under a traditional Basque prism (there is also an authentic traditional Basque melody in the middle of the song). The music changes several times from acoustic to metal and my opinion is that the band is better in its folk face. Ibai’s unique accordion and flutes are really enchanting and his epic clean vocals much improved!

Next song, entitled “Comme le Son du Cor est Triste au Fond des Bois!” comes from the French band Hanternoz. They began in 2006 and two years later released their debut full-length “Metal Kozh“, while in 2010 the 33-minute EP “Linceuls d’Ecume” was out by Antiq label. I haven’t listened to their previous works, but this 15 minutes song is long enough to understand their music. I would say they sound like a mixture of Bathory and Stille Volk! They play epic black metal with a folk touch and many traditional instruments. Their production and overall sound has an underground aesthetic that fits perfectly with their music. All lyrics are in French and they mostly use brutal vocals, with a few clean male ones (I think both need improvement). They have also some acoustic folk passages and some instrumental folk metal parts, which make the song much more interesting.

The last song is “De l’Art de la Fauconnerie en Noir Anjou” by the pagan black metal band Anceisural Eritance that was formed in 2005 and released so far only 2 demos in 2006 and 2007. The band began with a complete line-up, but split-up in 2008. Now Lazareth (also in Hanternoz and several other bands) decided to awaken Anceisural Eritance as his personal project. This song is the shorter in the split, lasting for 10 minutes. Their music is raw underground black metal, with an epic pagan feeling. The use of a wind instrument (I can’t identify it with certainty) gives a melodic melancholic folk twist in their music and everything could be nicer with a better production.

Overall “D’Anjou En Vasconie – La Très Grande Chasse D’Hellequin” is an interesting release and a nice way to get familiar with these 3 bands. It is released in a limited to 100 copies CDr version by Antiq label and only a few copies are left. So, if you are interested, you better hurry up.

Giudizio complessivo: 8,5/10

Hi,
I just wanted to clarify that Ibai ([email protected]) has no more copies left and I ordered mine through Antiq the 29th September (and arrived at home in less than a week). Antiq ([email protected]) could have more copies left but not much!

Ilbeltz most recently participated in a song by Hanternoz, the breton band. feel free to check it out :

The band HANTERNOZ just put online a new song, "The Swan",(Le Cygne) taken from the compilation of unreleased EPs, "Mallozh d'ar Zistrujerien Kastell Ankiniz".

This title is an hail to the victory of Yann IV of Britanny, legitimate heir to the dukes of Britanny throne, against the troupes of Blois in Auray, setting an end to the succession wars.

Thanks to the intervention of Roman from the band DRUDKH, the band will release its exclusive titles of the compilation on Werewolf Promotions, in Poland and not in France. The cover will be censored by the band itself to keep away from danger.

Lineup :
Sparda : bass / choirs
Hyvermor : guitars / flutes / bombardes / vocals / choirs
Lokaeda : drums

Don"t hesitate to share and spread and listen, if regionnal folklore interests you, and of course if you think truth shall fight with sword the lies we have to face
