I was always a pretty big fan of Calculating Infinity whilst I was younger and more into mathcore/ chaotic hardcore, but lost interest completely after that.
Recently they dropped Option Paralysis and I can't stop listenin! Even went back and listened to the 2 previous full lengths and enjoy them as well...

so my question for you guys is...

is anyone else a fan? I never hear them get name dropped.
and do people still consider them metal ?

When Calculating INfinity came out I pretty much thought they were hardcore's answer to Atheist. Generally the music was not the sort of thing to impress me...obviously extremely talented and that vocalist is one pissed off bastard, but his endless ranting that covered all the music in gibberish didn't sound at all appealing to my ears.

I can listen to Calculating Infinity and the s/t EP every once in a while. They've put out a lot of crap though.

I never considered them a hardcore band, however.

DEP have been a very uneven band for me until Option Paralysis. Calculating Infinity had a few killer tracks, a lot of insane playing and some good ideas but most of it isn't particularly memorable. Miss Machine was best when they strayed into more experimental territory but the more straight ahead techy stuff got a bit old. Ire Works made both styles much better, but they were still very much at odds with each other. Option Paralysis is really the first album where all the various influences and styles that the band uses feel completely natural to the songs that they are writing.

"Unretrofied" is probably the only song I like by these guys because it's the only song I can actually sit through. I remember seeing the video for it back in 2004 when it first debuted and I still think it's an ok song. Not much else I can say about this band other than their live performances being destructive.

Used to think Calculating Infinity was pretty cool years ago, but now the only release i'll play is Irony Is A Dead Scene. That EP fucking rules.

Calculating Infinity and Irony Is A Dead Scene are both really good, but I never find myself wanting to listen to them very often.

Don't understand all the worship for this band. Other than the above mentioned records, completely 'meh'.

Yeah I'm definitely a fan. It's funny that it's now they're brought up on this forum, because I had this week long addiction to them the last week of July. I never really liked them, but just one day I was really pissed off and listened to them and it clicked perfectly. I know it sounds somewhat juvenile- but its true. DEP is my pissed off music. And I also got to see them live recently and they were incredible. One of the craziest bands I've ever seen perform.

Someone made me listen to them. It was interesting, but there was little range, well, for my liking. Only harsh loud then clean stuff...nothing in between. And, I'm just not too fond of the whole modern hardcore sound anyhow, so, yeah.

I don't think Dillinger is the "Atheist" of hardcore, more like the Meshuggah. At least some of the older stuff came off that way to me, especially this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnv2r9AZucA

The notoriety of this band's live performance cannot be ignored either. They fucking jump on people's heads. It's fucking awesome to watch on youtube, but I saw them live once and I was just glad I wasn't dead center...

Dillinger Escape Plan is generally a weird, weird band. I can't not like them though, after buying Miss Machine which basically sealed my interest in extreme music (ultimately metal), experiencing how they make hardcore music that isn't layered in breakdowns, and especially the insane technicality yet great song-writing brought into their music that yields nothing short of total anarchy. They aren't a favorite of mine, but I still listen to them once in and while. And Goatfangs is right: they put on a tremendous live show.

Mike Patton on Irony is a Dead Scene = awesome.

I am generally turned off by hardcore vocals and hardcore instrumentation, no matter how fast or technical it is. I can tolerate hardcore vocals in small doses when it's backed by non-hardcore music ala Solace or Mastodon, but DEP irritates my ears.

I have both Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine. I like maybe two or three tracks off each (typically the songs for which I bought the albums), but I regret both purchases as I fairly strongly dislike the remaining material on each album. I just find the general style, presentation, and arrangement to be fairly aggravating. It's a shame really, as if they made more songs like Unretrofied and Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants I would probably quite like them...

I like DEP. Interesting to see people saying that they prefer that stuff that doesn't sound all hectic and crazy, as, since "Miss Machine" came out, it seemed like all I saw was consistent criticism that they would branch out from the crazy, hectic stuff. I admire their willingness to branch out. I suppose it would probably be easy for them to continually remake "Calculating Infinity" over and over again like a lot of people seem to want them to do, but I think it would be boring, too.

I saw them in June this year, and I was front center. It was pretty wild to say the least... :P
Luckily for me, Greg didn't go in for any of his overhead jogging, but it was still easily one of the most intense gigs I've ever been to, despite seeing Napalm Death at the same festival! Fantastic band, especially live, and I plan on catching them again in October in Manchester, after I move there for university.

Not a fan at all, however I love the one song that Mike Patton does with them. Hollywoods Squares, I think? Great song. They don't do much else for me though.

They did an entire EP with Mike Patton. Irony Is A Dead Scene is it's name.

Alot of people know them for their more chaotic stuff but in my opinion they really shine when they do something more melodic like,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMEYLlDThZU (amazing chorus on this track)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqXVBeEu ... re=channel (a pretty commercial song from them showing their pop side)
Overall I cant say I'm a big fan I caught them live and it just sounded like a bunch of noise, likely due to the shitty venue I saw them in. They are undeniably versatile and anyone who thinks they are a one trick pony should look further into their catalogue.

I don't deny that they're somewhat technically talented, but every song just sounds bland and irritating to me. I didn't even like them when I was into Nu Metal/Core bands and that chorus sounds like your typical sickly Nu Metal vocals.

No mention of "Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants" when it comes to their catchier songs? Come on. Love the chorus and post-chorus dissonant riffs to bits. "Milk Lizard' is still my favorite "catchy DEP tune" though. Ending is immense.

I don't know, I think they're definitely good musicians, but I'm afraid I don't have much of a desire to listen to their music most of the time.

I have to say, seeing Ire Works for sale at Target was very strange.

I have their last three albums ('Miss Machine', 'Ire Works', and 'Option Paralysis') and I love them all. I've yet to buy a copy of 'Calculating Infinity', as well as their earlier EPs. TDEP is definitely an acquired taste, so I can understand why this thread is so divided.
