NEW - Please submit only one RDTF-related Oven Fodder post per week to prevent an overload of work in Oven Fodder for the staff.

Overview

I'm creating this task force following a comment I recently made in Oven Fodder, and after receiving permission from the staff. The objective is to have an organized way of reading accepted reviews and weed out what shouldn't be here, starting out with the most reviewed releases. Users interested in helping can ask to be assigned to the album of their choice (from the "Available" list below) and will then have a month to read each review and carefully determine which ones should be deleted for that release. This is not a contest. You won't receive points or prizes. This is only to help the site get rid of unwanted reviews on a large/thorough scale. This will be an ongoing process and I will continue to add more albums to the available list of releases, and each section will get updated as the releases are completed by or assigned to the volunteers.

Rules
  • One release at a time. You can always volunteer to do more when you're done with your current assignment. If you decide you want to switch to another release or you decide you don't have the time anymore, just say so and it will be assigned to someone else.
  • One release, per person, per week. Additional releases may be assigned at any time (after your last report), but please wait at least seven days from your last RDTF-related Oven Fodder post to submit another report.
  • You have up to one month to finish each release. This is way more time than what most people will need, but there should be some limit in case a volunteer forgets or gets too busy to work on it, so another user can take his/her place.
  • First-come, first-served. The first person to request an album in this thread will have it assigned to them.
  • Be familiar with the review rules and proper spelling/grammar. Music description is the biggest thing to keep in mind when reading each review, but all other rules, general review knowledge, and knowledge of English spelling/grammar is of course required to come to proper conclusions about which reviews should stay or go.
  • Don't rush! It's not a contest. The most important thing, and the whole reason, for doing this is to get rid of reviews that don't belong.
  • Preferably be familiar with the album in question. There isn't much way to enforce this, but it's best that you know the release you want to do so you'll be aware of any factual inaccuracies or objectively wrong music description.
  • There is no required number for how many reviews you should report for deletion. It's possible that no reviews need to be deleted on a page, and that's fine.
  • Feel free to use this thread for cases that you're unsure about to get additional opinions.
Process
  1. Determine which release you want to read.
  2. Post in this thread when you decide and state the name. If you're the first person to request that release, you can automatically start, and 30 days will begin counting down from your post date.
  3. Use as much of the one month as you need to read every review, but don't post your findings until you have read all of the reviews.
  4. Post the review(s) that should be deleted in Oven Fodder, along with a mention that your findings are related to this task force. If none need to be deleted, post a message in this thread or PM me.
  5. I'll keep an eye on Oven Fodder every day, but you can write a message here or PM me when you've completed a release, and optionally you can then ask for a new assignment if desired.

Below is the list we'll use to keep track of the releases. The number next to each release name in the "Available" section is the current number of reviews for that release. The names of the users assigned to each release will be written next to the name for every respective release in the "In Progress" and "Done" sections, as well as a due date in the "In Progress" section.

I can do Dark Passion Play by Nightwish, I'm highly familiar with that album and I don't think too many others here will be keen to do it.

Wouldn't it make sense to mark the post in Oven Fodder as being related to this thread?

I'll take Transilvanian Hunger.

Edit: By that I mean we should post in the oven fodder thread, along with the review to be deleted, that the post/album is related to THIS thread, thus making it easier for you to find which ones are finished, instead of having to double check or something.

This all seems a bit unnecesary and overzealous. Does it hurt to let some old reviews stay online? Is this some kind of ritual purification of the site?

Sure, that would be good. I'll add it to the OP.

I think if the staff believed that, they wouldn't bother deleting much or any that show up in Oven Fodder. Sure, this is a mechanical and organized way to go about it, but I see the site only benefiting from this. The website doesn't need bad reviews clogging it up and I don't think the userbase reading them appreciates it either. I'd be interested in hearing more thoughts on this subject though.

i think as long as this sort of stuff doesn't push up the minimum word count/the whole "IM AN ENGLISH MAJOR" thing to crazy levels, it's all good. Some people definitely get a bit caught up in this sort of stuff though. But yeah all in all this is a fine idea.

I'm taking World Painted Blood. I'll have fun analyzing my own review. Oh, and I'll take a look at the others too.

maybe , but it's more about my preference for short and punchy reviews; I'll take them over a long and overwrought essay anyday.

I agree, but not every short review is punchy. In fact, I'd go as far as saying not many of them are.

Sure, though I'll take a look at your review for it, to add whatever level of fairness that might bring. Same goes for anyone taking a release for which they've done a review. If they're still around, feel free to take other Slayer releases, but only work on one at at time as I said in the OP.

I think they each have their place, but I tend to agree that I wouldn't be particularly fond of all reviews being long and wordy, since that doesn't always necessarily mean good, and sometimes it can be a bad thing in itself. Getting the point across in a concise way is what I prefer as a reader, but long ones done well are a real treat also.

I'm in, Lana, though I need to go take an eye exam today so I'll be right back.

Edit: Oh, forgot to claim one.

Trivium - Ascendancy

Oh yeah, you're goin' down, heafy metal.

Edit 2: I need to take a breather, because these Trivium reviews are terrible. Bad band, I got that part, but holy crap. :(

Actually our standards get progressively higher as the site goes on. This is a good thing. I've been ritually purifying the site myself for years now.

I've done Dark Passion Play, now I'll move on to Celtic Frost's Monotheist.

Also, Lana, could you take a look at my reviews for Monotheist and Dark Passion Play to ensure I'm not being sub-consciously biased?

Updated to here.

I'll add more choices in a few days. The ones that are up there currently are the first 200 releases with the most reviews, so I'll add another 100 or so in the coming days.

Also, Lana, could you take a look at my reviews for Monotheist and Dark Passion Play to ensure I'm not being sub-consciously biased?

They look good to me, thanks for bringing it up.

Naught seems intent on perpetually ignoring procedure.

Recently, I submitted a comprehensive list of several reviews for Overkill's fourth full-length album, The Years of Decay (1989) which are to be removed from the Encyclopaedia Metallum. Those said recommendations may be viewed at the respective oven fodder. As of late, I have been browsing through each review pertaining to Overkill's discography in search of reviews which are to be deleted.

Originally, I thought that this thread would not have accumulated much of a reaction from the forum-users, however, I stand corrected on that matter. Nevertheless, I will note each post I submit which recommends reviews which should be removed from the Encyclopaedia Metallum within this thread.

Heh, yeah. No worries though, Naught, but if you want to do more, it's best to post your choice here first so multiple people don't work on the same album. Thanks to you and all who have contributed so far.

I hope some of my reviews hold up against the purge.

Being a university student with too much spare time on my hands, I have finished with Monotheist and now I'll move on to In Sorte Diaboli by Dimmu Borgir.

I get the feeling "Blackwater Park" is in desperate need of a good purging, due to the rather polarized views on the band that has, of course, always been there. Count me in.

I have a question related to a potential factual accuracy in a review.

Quote:
In Sorte Diaboli is not quite black metal. I would say that it is more on the lines of melodic death metal. It’s not raw enough for me to really consider it black metal at this point. Dimmu Borgir has refined their music to break out of black metal stereotypes (even if they still look and perform live in that style)

That's taken from a review for Dimmu's ISD, would describing the band as melodeath count as a factual inaccuracy, even if the reviewer makes it clear it's an opinion, and gives justification for his opinion? In this case, it isn't raw enough to be black metal, in the reviewers opinion.

Otherwise, the review in question is pretty decent.

Can I get people's opinions on this?

It's like calling Shining's (Swe) later material (strictly talking about IV-V) black metal. In the general use of the term, it isn't black metal. In a looser form, it is, and one can clearly hear it, even if it isn't dominant in force. For Dimmu Borgir, their early material was considerably more black metal than that particular album, but that doesn't dismiss that album from carrying black metal. In that sense, the reviewer is incorrect, but 1) I wouldn't hold his own opinion as fact because it isn't meant to be taken that way and 2) that album doesn't fit black metal in the general sense anyway.

Kind of a mix, but I think you could let it slide. Like I'd call In Flames' The Jester Race heavy / power (very loose when I say that) with harsh vocals. One can clearly hear those in the music, yet it would still be considered melodic death just by the way it forms together.

BTW NO ONE TAKE TRIVIUM's THE CRUSADE. Heafy and I are going to throw down after I kick Ascendancy's ass.

Sorry to chew up more thread space; but some of this album' reviews are giving me a few head-scratching moments. There's another review where the reviewer refers to Silenoz's vocals. Silenoz does no vocals, the reviewer apparently means ICS Vortex. Again, the review is an otherwise good one, with a blatant factual error. Is this enough to warrant the review's deletion?

I personally don't think that's worth a deletion, but an email to the reviewer mentioning that should probably be done. Correct me if I'm wrong, mods or anyone.

That would be a suitable response for that kind of an error.

...And done!

And Kerberos, in case of doubt - just include it in the list on the oven fodder with an explanation (although a tiny fallacy in facts like the one you've mention wouldn't be considered as a cause for deletion, IMO), ultimately the mods will decide which ones to delete and which ones to keep. Chances are that some of your list will be kept anyway, since different mods have different standarts for a deletable review.

Done with In Sorte Diaboli.

I guess I'll move onto Nightwish's Once.

I have nothing better to do for a while, so I'll take Ensiferum's debut.

EDIT: Aaaaand I had more time on my hands than I figured, so it's done already. I can take 3 Inches of Blood's Advance and Vanquish next, although I assume I'll flip as much shit over the word "elitist" as I did with "viking metal" on my last crusade.

I guess I'll tackle Diminishing Between Worlds, if for no other reason than to give myself something to do.

EDIT: Done! Not gonna go after another one right away, but I'll definitely be cleansing some other albums of shitty reviews sometime in the near future.
