I see kickass bands like Atheist taking shitloads of Jazz influnce, so I decided that it would be a good idea for me to start listening to it, to throw some more diversity in my songwriting.

What is some good jazz to check out? Preferrably freeform and technical, but if it's not, but it's good, post it anyways.

You might like Dave Weckl. He is a fantastic drummer that also has a good sized discography with his band. I think you will like what he has to offer.

You may also like Coltrane's giant steps and a love supreme. More accessible then his later way out there type stuff, but still pretty tech.

There was a group from the late '80s called Last Exit that you might be interested in. Sonny Sharrock and Peter Brötzmann (both on probert's list) were members, along with Bill Laswell on bass and Roland Shannon Jackson on drums.

For something a bit more structured, you might like Eclecticism by Japanese saxophonist Kazutoki Umezu. The music is still quite chaotic (if not as abrasive as Last Exit), but is much closer to straight-ahead jazz in terms of formal structure. Marc Ribot plays guitar on this album, and he's another great player to check out.
