Dang, SoP is maybe one of the best technical death metal bands! The music is very technical without being overdone and the drumming is top notch.

Anyone else listen to them? :D

If you wanna check them out, listen to Lash by Lash or Scorched.

I only think they are just decent. Some alright riffs, some good ones and some not so great. Dang.

Are you serious? SOP is the very definition of 'overdone'.

Their music isn't bad, but they place WAAAAAY too much emphasis on speed [same with most technical metal bands, really]. And their guitar tone is completely sterile and punchless.

I quite enjoy their work. They're a very solid tech/brutal death metal band, imho. I wouldn't say that they completely avoid being 'overdone,' per se; I just happen to think that it's all right if death metal is a bit overdone as long as it's effective. SOP are an interesting, enjoyable listen as far as I'm concerned, so it's all good.

Of course they emphasise speed, that is really the only way to convey technicality through sound alone. There are many songs that are played at a rather slow pace, but are fucking hard to play (this is more with classical guitar though) like this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwvDon1_iKs

Even if it may not look difficult, trust me, I play classical guitar and I've finished grade 7, and I cannot even touch this piece.

Regarding SoP, I've heard a lot of praise for them but never checked out their stuff. What would be a good starting point (btw I'm a noob when it comes to tech death, the only band I really know is Psycroptic, and I hate Necrofaggot)

The band have the capability to occasionally be very enjoyable, but are typically extremely annoying due to their fucking guitar tone and structureless songs. That tone is the scourge of death metal, fucking Necrophagist, it's all their fault. I like that they try to make the dual guitar wanking thing work by actually making each of them interact together, which can result in some really cool music, but typically they're just another annoying wanky modern tech death heap of shit.

They've only released two albums so far, so there's not a huge discography to sift through. I only have Noctambulant, so I guess start there?

I like Necrophagist. :(

When are people going to admit that brutal/technical death metal = deathcore?

When ALL brutal/tech death bands think it's fun to get into chuggy chuggy breakdowns.

as for SoP, I enjoy them, but I enjoy their previous effort Cabinet alot more. It's alot more straightforward and you can distinctively tell groove from groove and melody from melody. Noctambulant just seems like extreme chaos.

The day I start complaining about bands playing too fast is the day I stop listening to metal.

I remember liking Cabinet, and live they were great as well, but I haven't listened much to them in the last few years. I'm not sure if I have heard Noctambulant. However, I have come to love Anata, who play a fairly similar style, maybe with less emphasis on speed (that is, if I do remember correctly what SoP sounded like).

Similar in some ways, but far more melodic, with a little bit of Immolation-esque tempo changing. They also have actual riffs and melodies, unlike a lot of modern shitty bands.

But is it actually the speed which causes them to be annoying, would the music be any better if it was was slower? No. It would not, in fact, it'd probably lose what little appeal it has. Emphasis on speed doesn't automatically mean something will suck, it's just that the tech death bands of the last 10 years don't know the first thing about death metal.

I actually like them. I don't know what but it's appealing and catchy in some way.
Spawn Of Possession is good to but a little soulless. And a more powerful production wouldn't hurt.

It should be raw and sick, which is not something you can say about the majority of modern tech death

I don't mind SoP but I'm not that big of a fan either. I don't know, really, just not brutal enough for me.

I'm a big fan of "Cabinet". "Noctambulant" is a sold release, but they lost brutality for the sake of being technical.

Depends on how you define "raw and sick".

Spawn of Possession is an excellent band. I love their guitarists and how they work around each other. Bryssling had a rough recording of some of their new material on his myspace, but has since taken it down. For such a technical band, it really just sounded like more of the same. Not that that's a bad thing... in my opinion.

This is akin to the "tr00 vs. non-tr00" black metal debate. Really, people still give a shit?

Maybe the reason I enjoy them so much is because I'm a musician. However, I dislike Necrophagist and consider SoP to be much more musically "organic".

I heard they're working on some new material too.

The first thing about death metal is that it should be death metal. Something that somehow escapes hundreds of bands.

what.

You may want to revise this statement a bit. You know, unless you want to claim that any fag with a guitar can play Joe Satriani, and that Dragonforce is the epitome of technical wizardry (despite them really just basing their music on a few basic chord shapes).

"raw and sick" sounds like goregrind. If I where to explain death metal with two words it would be "intense and brutal".

Am I to believe that Infester, Carnage and Autopsy are goregrind, then?

You know there isn't a universal definition of what "raw and sick" music is. It's all down to subjective opinion. But if that's your criteria for being death metal then good for you.

There's not a human being alive who would listen to those three bands and not call them 'raw and sick', or some synonym thereof.

Why does it have to be an either-or proposition?

And frankly, bands like Spawn of Possession, Necrophagist, Obscura, and all others like them, are anything but 'brutal' to my ears.

'Brutal' is a term implying a sort of primal aggression, whereas those bands are much more cerebral and surgical than they are aggressive.

Those bands are sonic torture to people not used to this kind of music. Personally I think there are very few bands who I think are brutal, but I'm used to this kind of music. I have a friend who is not, he thinks Dismember is the most brutal band in existence.

So was Slayer. My point was it takes a lot from a band to be considered actually "brutal" by a seasoned fan. I don't think SoP, Necrophagist and the likes are the least brutal either, not by my standards.

Not by anyone's standards, they barely have riffs at all, and the ones that are there have no punch to them.
