Sure if i'd heard these albums as a kid it would freak me out, but these days it's mostly just fun thrashing metal.

songs (respectively) like Black Metal, Come to the Sabbath, The Exorcist, Hell Awaits, Recrucify, and Satan Spawn (The Caco Daemon) still don't give you an evil feeling inside when you hear them today?

A little perhaps, but it's hard for one song to influence the mood of a entire album.

Elend's 'The Umbersun' is easily the 'darkest and evilest' piece of music I've yet to hear. Listen to the first track, "Du Tréfonds des Ténèbres". It'd make Atilla shit himself.

Someone mentioned Stalaggh, and this truly is the scariest most evil fucked up music ever recorded, if you can call it music.

Seriously, find some of this and I'm sure you will agree
Stalaggh is actually pretty stupid. As for me the first time I heard Cannibal Corpse it scared me shitless (Sounds wussy I know) but when I will kill you started that guitar build up then Corpsegrinder starts growling about torturing someone it was scary.

As for albums that are pretty chilling I'd go with De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Under the Sign of Hell.

Dark Funeral's Attera Totus Sanctus is one black, evil album. Pure blasphemy from beginning to end, with accomplished songwriting and decent prodution to make you want to listen to it.

I second this.

Transylvanian Hunger is also pretty scary, to me anyway. The main riff in the second track sends chills down my spine.

I'm going to second the Monotheist suggestion - considering it's not doing anything extreme, the atmosphere is very sinister. The cover art disturbs me as well. I might go and listen to it now actually.

the fact that it's a long album forces you to endure the albums themes as well. there's no backing out once you start it! no, the music isn't extreme metal, but the atmosphere is extreme i would say. if someone is coming to this album thinking it's Morbid Tales pt.2 then they're fucked for a disappointment. actually, if anyone thinks it's pt.2 of any previous Celtic Frost release, then they're doomed.

The first time I listened to the album was when I was home alone at night. I was scared to death. The over all sinster atmosphere is very scary.

I you want evil albums I would go with Anaal Nathrakh, most if not all their albums are pretty evil, not scary though.

Moevot's Abgzvoryathre demo is the only album that has provoked genuine fear in me when I first heard it a few years ago.

This is definitely a very evil-sounding album, but not scary at all.

Anaal Nathrakh

Extremely hateful, and admittedly I've even been a bit freaked out by some of Dave's blood-curdling screams, but I've never lost sleep over it.

Several black metal bands have been known to send tingles down my spine, but those were quickly replaced with evil, cheesy grins. :P

To me, the harshest, most terrifying atmospheres are found in funeral doom and doom/death. Asunder, Ataraxie, Disembowelment, Ea, Esoteric, Evoken, Mar de Grises, Mournful Congregation, Thergothon, Tyranny, and Wraith of the Ropes have all released some pretty creepy pieces of music (in the right conditions, of course).

Though they're not part of the above genre cluster, Neurosis once kept me up at night when I was younger. When I first listened to "Through Silver in Blood," it completely freaked me out, but I loved the album so much that I couldn't put it away.

EDIT: Ahh! How could I forget Dolorian? Those seemingly down-tempo rhythms and melodies turn into epically nightmarish dirges. Definitely one of the creepier bands playing music today, even if people accuse them of being a bit formulaic.

Just given the fact that they have this pseudo-biker gang attitude along with that whole NYDM brotherhood that Will Rahmer started I'd have to go with Mortician.

Sorry read that as band not album.

Having heard Peste Noire for the first time this week, they are on a different level of creepiness from most metal.

Trust me dude, you don't have to go that far (an acid trip but, you may if you wish to) a joi-hash-weed-int will do, and experience the MADNESS, but seriously, I am NOT going to hype it up, but the 35 to 40 mins of sheer 'cleverly crafted' lunacy is well worth it.

Well you see, we don't have weed good enough to match ANY kind of hash, much less any hash here, so I doubt that's possible just yet. But if you can hook me up.... :P
But I completely believe it. That album is just fucking evil. Immortal Rites opens up the evil with such a acrid atmosphere, its just fucking insane afterwards. I love it. One of the best metal albums I've heard.

Black Funerals "Az-I-Dahak". Very strange and hauntingly evil atmosphere.
