I've just thought of something that i find worse than people who are ignorant; Metal heads who know TOO much. I dunno if this occurs to anyone else but I seem to know a few metalheads that just continually vomit random facts about bands. Most of the time its just quoting wikipedia word for word... :S
eg; Every time I talk about Nile one of these people would say "Sanders hasn't even been to Egypt".
Mentioning Mayhem would bring up "Euronymous sent bits of Dead's skull bone to those who were worthy didn't he?"
etc,etc

I can't think of more at the moment (although there are plenty of examples)... but its these stupid comments that piss me off more than "SLIPKNOT ARE BROOOTAL".

This is called namedropping, and seems to be spewed forth mostly by people who only discovered metal two years ago or less and suddenly consider themselves veterans of the scene. Odds are, they don't even actually closely listen to very much metal and it's probably all for show (to impress other people with their esoteric knowledge). You have my permission to bitchslap these people.

I take offense at this statement. sure, I do this a lot, probably due to my OCD, but still, I actually have listened to metal over 10 years so this doesn't apply to me.

Wasn't aimed at you at all--it's one thing when someone who has been listening to metal for 10+ years mentions many band names because it's likely that they're very familiar with most of those bands, it's another when someone who has been listening for 1-2 years or less says the exact same words. Frankly, that just isn't enough time to really digest the music.
Also, I get the feeling that constant namedropping (by recent metal converts) is little more than a sad attempt to gain 'cred'.

Honestly, I know people who've been listening to metal for 30 years and still don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Once around '92 my 'ol man asked me if there were any females in metal. Told him there were a few and just to be an ass I played him the part in Nuclear Death's "The Third Antichrist" where Lori actually starts to sing "Acid rain falls listless from the sky no one has the chance to wonder why...die!". He just said 'jeez' and had on one of those saddened expressions like the world just went down a notch or two in his book.

So to summarize this 7 page thread...

1. Your favorite band is screamo.
2. Your favorite band sounds like a cat getting skinned and you should listen to normal music with singing.

haha yes but being called screamo is what upsets me the most. whatever, you think my music stinks. i know their wrong and they just can't comprehend it. but getting called screamo, thats like saying manowar is glam metal and metallica is the way more brutal.

Another thing this thread has taught me is that people are fucking weak and pathetic. "WYAAAH! I'm afraid of noisy, compressed sound recorded onto a disc! WYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"

And I've learned that many people only have very run-of-the-mill stories to share. Acrobat's stories and a few others I skimmed through were entertaining; the rest were bland, usually revolving around people calling metal screamo or thinking that the metalhead in the story is soooo crazy. I'd share stories but I don't really have any. I guess people seem to think I'm more aggressive than is normal but I don't think that's just because of music.

There are always exceptions (and perhaps these people have just... aged?), but my point was that the 30 year still-going-strong veterans are way more likely to know what they're talking about. Let me put it this way: I'd say that, in a company of metalheads who've been into the music for different spans of time, it's often wise for the newer fans to try to learn from longtime fans instead of striving to impress.

Reactions to a gig I (and other metal groups) played at a school:
"Too noisy."

Generally, even my closed-minded friends who dislike metal find the instrumental side tolerable, even very good in some cases. It's the harsh vocals that turn off the majority, and I've heard many quite funny (but cliché) comments about them.

Whenever my mom's in the passanger's seat I fart, roll the windows up, and blast Severed Survival at full volume.

It's just a knee-jerk reaction.

Kid looking for members for his 'death metal' band:
"If you like slipknot and metallica you're the one."

Random people at school:
"You don't like linkin park! But I though you listened to metal. What about disturbed?" :nono:

Also the general 'yelling' or 'shouting' music comments come daily.

Try adding something more interesting to the thread. This is exactly like the last 4 pages of posts.
