Anyone heard of this band? They are certainly one of the most interesting bands I've come across in awhile. Thoughts? Reccomendations?

They aren't interesting in any sense of the word, unless you find Japanese lady-boys slightly attractive.

They're total shit in every department. Bad music, bad music videos, bad image, everything.

Yeah, check out the album "Vulgar" it's one of their goodies. If you like them you should also check out the groups MUCC, Girugamesh, D'espairs Ray, and Malice Mizer.

If there is anything I remember about them, it's that they sucked the big enchilada.

Pretty terrible band. Definitive visual kei faggotry.

I like them, though that may only be because I'm turned on by metrosexuals. Well, either that, or I'm open-minded and mature enough to look past their image and actually enjoy the music without thinking "Ew. Are those guys GAY?!"

Why does visual kei suck?

"Because metal is supposed to be cool."

This is the truth. They suck. Hard. :ugh:

I don't like real Marilyn Manson, why would I want a third rate Japanese knockoff when some genuinely good bands come from Japan?

People seriously consider this metal? I never even got that from the people on an anime forum I frequent.

Apart from the song Yokan which I was hooked on completely for one summer, I don't like this band, or any visual kei band for that matter.

I don't get on the forums alot actually. Judging by the song "Dozing Green" I heard, I thought people on here would like them. I guess not lol. Oh well. Its not like I base what music I like on what is accepted here. I'll listen to Dir en grey all I want.

Yeah, because albums like Withering to Death or Uroboros sound exactly like blatant ripoffs of stuff like Antichrist Superstar or Eat Me, Drink Me.

Varying degrees of crap is still crap.

Comparing the two is like comparing feces to diarrhea. Their properties might be different but a healthy person would want very little to do with either one.

I've only heard a few songs, but they didn't spark any interest in me. Their singer sounded like he would kill a man to kiss Mike Patton's shoes. The rest of the music was faceless.

That's not necessarily a bad thing; Patton's a fantastic vocalist, even if he does have odd taste. Their singer is too bad to have any influences as good as Mike Patton.

Subjectively speaking, I can't fault you. Whether you like them or not, however, doesn't change the fact that Marilyn Manson's music and Dir en grey's music sound very different from each other. I simply pointed that out. No need to get pissy.

Dir En What? I didn't know of em, even before I got into metal. I guess you learn something new everyday. I should watch the TV more often...

This.

I had a friend who was pretty into them a while back, but I never could sit through more than the first minute or so of a song.

The amount of Dir en grey hatred on this board is just wow. At any rate they are pretty interesting though I prefer their older more experimental stuff like Kisou though. I can't really give you a direction to start in since I don't know exactly what you're looking for. I'd have to say listen to their newer stuff (VULGAR, Withering to Death, The Marrow of a Bone, Uroboros). Just be mindful that their older albums (GAUZE, MACABRE, Kisou) are more or less completely different. They are a really good band and have a lot of variety to them so I'm sure you'll come across something that you like. :)

I'm actually a huge Mike Patton fan. It's just that I dislike it when singers try to cop his style without understanding the thing that makes Mike Patton great, which is his range and dynamics. Guys like the singer of Dir En Grey, and Jonathan Davis are just bad Mike Patton wannabes.

I'll be the first to admit that I hate Dir en Grey, I'll also be the first to admit I like Visual-kei. I really dont understand the hatred of Visual-Kei, sure they wear ridiculous outfits and wear makeup, but theres some other music scene that does the same thing that I can't put my finger on right now. Oh yea thats right, Black Metal.

Black metal imagery is at least kind of cool. Dressing like you want to put Boy George to shame isn't.

What, you don't think there's some appeal to the old Darkthrone covers? Or the pictures of Dead as an undead thrasher?

The music isn't as bad as I thought, but fuck, they try too hard. And the worst part is that people actually buy it.

They would rock my world if I were still 14 though.

It's quite baffling to see how some of you guys follow keep on repeating the same old stereotypes about this band. If there's one thing that ought to be kept in mind about DEG, is that they do not belong to any musical style in particular. Throughout their career they have tried so many musical styles and approaches that it is simply unfair to say they're, say, a mallcore band or something. To illustrate what i am talking about i'd suggest to check the following songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COgdR91yO3Y

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXA967RBM6s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ8ERDE6SYk

I am not saying you have to dig it but, for fuck's sake, give them some credit.

They aren't mallcore, they're just bad all around, and I don't have to respect a band I cannot even enjoy in the slightest.
