So I know a lot of non-metal bands that use a lot of delay. Are there any bands (power, Gothenburg, etc bands aside) that use delay in a pretty prominent way. So are there thrash/death/etc bands that have use a delay pedal? I want to learn how to use my delay pedal I just bought so I was wondering if there are any metal bands that make good use of it?

Almost every modern metal production uses delay.

No no not during production. I mean, where the guitarist actually uses a delay pedal in order to play a riff/song/solo etc.

Shoegaze black metal? Stoner and doom?
Beginning of My Dying Bride - "She is the Dark", heavy delay on guitars. Sounds haunting.

Does it make a difference (on studio albums) if the delay was recorded live or applied during mixing process? I don't think so.

Huh? I'm a bit confused. As for the meaning of delay, what do you mean most metal productions use delay...? How about this, maybe I should pull up an example of what I mean on youtube.
I mean, are their bands/guitarists that use delay to this, or similar, or etc effect:

Iommi uses a fuckload of delay in his first solos, see War Pigs for a quick example.

He means most metal abums today use delay, and is asking whether it makes a difference if the delay was recorded while playing or added afterwards.

I'm not really sure what the "difference" is that's is being referred to, but it certainly could make some type of a difference if the performer is hearing the delay effect live and interacting with it in a way that alters his/her performance as opposed to playing with a dry sound and then applying delay after the performance is recorded.

Anyway, I wouldn't concern myself too much with how anyone else uses delay in their music. Use the settings that best suit whatever song or part you are playing/recording. Experiment with the settings of your new pedal and see what you like and can use.

Ah yes, that is true, reminds me of Paul Gilbert's "Echo Song".

What I think the OP is basically saying is, are there any Metal bands that use the delay in the way that's usually associated with Prog + Space Rock, i.e. using the delay as a rhythmic device rather than just to add colour and texture to a guitar line. The best examples outside of Metal are Ozric Tentacles ("Dissolution" and "Kick Muck" particularly) and Pink Floyd ("One Of These Days"). If you aren't familiar with these tracks check them out, they'll show you how a delay can be an awesome tool.

It isn't something I've encountered much in Metal. As a fan of Space Rock and Ozrics etc, it's something I'd like to hear more of. Some more Progressive bands like Opeth, Tool and Porcupine Tree use them, but most Thrash/Death etc bands don't tend to utilise this effect much, apart from occasional intros etc.

Some other Metal related bands to check out:

5ive (or 5ive's Continuum Project)
The 3rd and the Mortal ("Sorrow" EP and "Tears Laid In Earth")
Anathema ("Pentecost III" + "Silent Enigma")
Balbulus (my band/project -- I use delay all the time. Check out http://www.myspace.com/balbulus)

Non-Metal:

Ozric Tentacles (definitely)
Hawkwind
Pink Floyd
Crow (my favourite band -- http://www.myspace.com/crowwhitstable)
Omnia Opera
Seefeel

Hope that's of some help.

Candlemass frequently uses delay in the vocal dept.
Mayhem uses it on "Ordo ad Chao" quite a bit.

Forbidden - Twisted into Form has some delay in the beginning.
Buckethead - Big Sur Moon. It's not metal but it still kicks ass and is basically build up around delay. Listen here.

Just thought of a couple more examples, My Dying Bride's "The Songless Bird" has a delay in the intro, also lots of Godflesh stuff uses delays. Industrial bands in general tend to use a lot of delay. Using programmed drums helps to keep delay effects in time.

Also,

Iommi doesn't use much delay, those solos are all double-tracked.

Check out Depravity - Silence of the Centuries. I just listened to the first track and there's a solo with a lot of delay or something on it so try it.
