I LOVE this thread,

The pistol shrimp

Dont get fooled by its common appearance, in fact, this is the crustacean equivalent of Solid Snake, heres why http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKPrGxB1Kzc

And all those freakishly looking deep sea fish being posted here? this is what eats them

The Goblin Shark, an extremely rare to to find deep sea shark, it supposedly has all the hallmarks of prehistoric sharks
Here is footage of the thing, although the narration is in Japanese http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXrq78AYHKc

That video of the pistol shrimp is quite incredible, I didnt know that was even possible. And the goblin shark video was just odd, I knew it could extend it jaw but I didnt know it looked as surreal as that.

Yes, I've heard some unsettling stories about chimps. Like the one about the lady who had her baby stolen by a chimp, which promptly climbed a tree, perched on a branch, and proceeded to eat it while she watched helplessly. Probably ruined a number of cool chimp movies for her.

Except for being bloody terrifying.

As funny as they are, a lot of apes are pretty nasty things. Chimps like to kill stuff, and orangutangs are serial rapists.

I loved that video, but I couldn't help but be disappointed upon the realisation that it wasn't real. :(

Speaking of spiders, no thread on weird creatures is complete without the Assassin Spider:

In Indonesia during orang-utan mating season, women who are walking alone are known to have been raped by them :puke:

The horseshoe crab is quite freaky, if nothing else then only because of the fact that they have blue blood, some strange number of eyes (I read somewhere that it was like 9 or something but I'm unsure), and hasn't evolved much at all for a ridiculous amount of time ( forsomething like 450 million years have they remained pretty much the same).

Man, you can't even see the hooks on those tentacles. They don't have suckers:

They get as large as a tiger's canines, and they swivel 180 degrees.

Wow.

Fuck. That. Shit.

Well, that explains the scars found on sperm whales.

But the whales nevertheless tend to win those engagements. Sonar power!!!

Heh, you can see them all over the beaches on the gulf coast. You can tell a person is a tourist when they stare at them like they've seen an alien, and run away. They won't bite or anything, and the tail isn't meant to sting.

A weird flashlight fish:

All the stuff I've read about the ocean floor is crazy. Especially the organisms that get heat by hanging out next to geothermal vents that spew heat from the earth's core.

This is an amazing thread. Since nobody's mentioned them yet, tube worms are pretty interesting.

I've sort of forgotten how to post images, but for this next animal you don't need one. Fishers are eerie creatures in my opinion, especially their call.
