what i'm trying to say is have you ever listened an album which first track is FUCKING AWESOME and the rest is just weak or acceptable?, that happen to me with these albums:

the haunted-the haunted (hate song)
anthrax-state of euphoria (be all, end all)
satyricon-rebal extravaganzza (havoc vultute)
hacavitz-katun (regnum satani (in league with satan))

and some others i can't remenber right now

That's what I thought about Soulside Journey when I first heard it. 'Cromlech' is a MONSTER of a fucking song and the rest of the album doesn't quite match it (though, at this point, I think the whole album utterly kicks ass).

I have that same experience lost of times.
Because if you play an album you start with the first song, so you hear it more often (I usually don't finish the entire album because I get bored).
And the more you hear it the more you like it...

Dark Angel's Time does not Heal worked this way for me.
I liked the first song the first and the last song the last.

That is kind of what I felt about the new Amon Amarth album...

Never had it happen. Usually as an album goes on I am more and more interested.

Battlelore-Sword's song.

Sons of the Riddermark comes in, and kicks some major ass. The rest of the album is ruined by laughable harsh vocals and and weak music in general.

I would say "Schatten Aus Der Alexander Welt" by Bethlehem, but that whole album is one of my favorites, and I never find the rest of the songs "weak" or boring. All the songs tie in very nicely together. Though, it is the most bad ass way to start off an album, in my opinion.

It's the same with me. I've never found that an album gets worse after the first song.

I would vote for both Forced Entry's full length albums. The first song on both are fantastic but the rest of the albums are nothing special.

Rotting Christ - Sanctus Diavolos. "Visions of a Blind Disorder" is such a spectacular song. The rest just fall utterly flat in comparison.

Naglfar - Harvest. "The Mirrors of My Soul" while not the first song is the only song that stands out and is far superior to the rest.

Paramaecium - The Birth and Massacre of Innocents

The rest of the album just wishes it was that insanely good.

Sanctuary - Battle Angels

The rest of the album is meh, and the rest of the stuff the band is...well, Nevermore.

Warbringer - War Without End
The song is Total War. Amazingly kickass, but the rest of the CD sounds almost exactly like a less drum oriented version of it.

Dew-Scented - Impact

Not bad for modern thrash metal, but Acts of Rage is simply explosive.
Holy shit, now if all modern thrash was like this we wouldn't need all these retro bands.

NOTHING off Mörk Gryning's "Return Fire" can live up to the first song on it. World Of The Dragon is fucking incredible with a masterful solo. One of my favorite songs EVER, actually. This thing has been with me through the years.

You take Amon Amarth far too seriously for your own good.

Cellador's Leaving All Behind is a good song, but the rest of the album just sucks.

You're probably right. Maybe it's just because I'm listening to their new CD right now, and it's fucking epic.

I never really saw what makes them sound so epic. Listening to anything by Mörk Gryning (except maybe My Friends, since its a peculiar number in their discography) paints a much more vivid scene in my mind than anything Amon Amarth ever did. The Surrounding is a great example, World Of The Dragon too. Journey... Perpetual Dissolution... The Aurora... Though I guess I'm just a big fan of them. I'm sure a big fan of Amon Amarth could name just as many songs.

Amon Amarth, while they have killer openers, have an album's worth of killer songs behind those openers so I wouldn't include them here. Otherwise I'd say that Astarte's Demonized has that monster of an opener Mutter Astarte, while Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger is the most stand-out track on the album (which is excellent throughout nevertheless), as is the case with Immortal's At the Heart of Winter (Withstand the fall of time) and Hypocrisy's Virus (Warpath).

The main reason I like them is back when I was 10, I had an unhealthy obsession with rap, but when somebody actually showed me a Judas Priest CD, it sent chills down my spine, it was so awesome. Amon Amarth reminds me of that chilling feeling.

I guess it depends on background? I'm not going to try and make an educated guess because most of the time, they end up being way off and I make an ass out of myself, so all I can say is, Amon Amarth is one of my favorite bands, so, yeah.

The first song off Amoral's "The Decrowning" is the only song I like on the entire album.

Some newer Kreator and Destruction albums (Violent Revolution, Enemy of God, The Antichrist, Inventor of Evil) fit this category. The first songs aren't "fucking awesome" by any means, but infinitely better than all the other songs.

I love Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, but Det Som En Gang Var definitely is the highlight of the album. The rest is good too, but doesn't even come close to the awesomeness of the first song.

Kreator's Enemy of God fits this to a T. The title track is awesome, and the rest of the albums ranges from sort of okay, to really weak.

Vital Remains - Dechristianize

The title song is really cool and my first listen was "HOLY SHIT!" but after listening to the rest, I realized it was all the exact same thing over again.

I have this problem with Forbidden's Twisted into Form. I hear Infinite, and my wang grows. I hear the rest of the album, and I yawn.

Also, there is a somewhat infamous rant on MetalCrypt about superfluous intros on albums. The author (I can't remember who did that one) said something along the lines of "I can't thing of a single instance where I'd say 'well that album kind of sucked, but that intro was AWESOME!'". I've found the perfect counterargument to that one... Devin Townsend's Ziltoid the Omniscient. ZTO sets this huge, epic backdrop for the rest of the album, and it never comes close to fulfilling it.

"Foul Body Autopsy" by Necrophagist (Onset of Putrefaction album)

The rest of the album is quite boring with some moments here and there. To me, the opening track is the best of the album. Some of the others might have better solos, though.

Beyond Fear's debut album was essentially weak, with an exception of the first song, Scream Machine. It is a speed metal anthem, like a modern day Painkiller.

Some other examples would be Touched by the Crimson King - Demons and Wizards, Satanic Curses - Mystic Prophecy, In the Arms of Devastation - Kataklysm, and Somewhere Out in Space - Gamma Ray

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Terraformer by Knut has some of this. The first real song kicks ass and then the rest is most meh. Read my review for more details *shameless plug*

I apologise for dragging the review into an unrelated thread, but theres one major criticism I have here. You mention that Genoa and Fallujah sound alike. This is simply not true. Genoa, while also lacking that sample and wail, is much slower paced - as well as having a fucking annoying repetitive part at the end. Fallujah is more just a hardcore song, whereas Genoa is technical sludge douchebaggery - and this is coming from one of their fans.

Nah...Crawl Through Knives and Pacing Death's Trail are better songs although Take This Life is one of the better songs on the album, but roughly equal to about half of it. For more information refer to the last post in the Review Feedback Workshop thread :-P
