How come noone mentioned excellent bands like Incriminated, IC Rex, Prevalent Resistance, Goatmoon, Urn, Devilry and the likes? I've had a habit of checking out metal exclusively from a particular country at a time, and there are some really excellent black metal and in general, metal bands from that country.

No,it's not really that. And there are always exceptions of course. What I am pointing out is some sort of stigmatism that just happens to pervade alot of the metal scene in a certain country. I don't think there really is something to it but I do find that there is alot of character that seems to come out of one place compared to another IMO.

Apocalyptica comes from Finland. And since that glorious day when I realised I don't actually like Nightwish very much, that's all that matters.

It's because they make great music. Finntroll and Impaled Nazarene are a couple of my favorite bands.

I am not aware of that nickname but I'm sure you made it up to emphasize your enthusiasm for the metal that comes from Finland.

While I don't have time to read through the whole thread I wanted to say that Finland has the best funeral doom bands.
This answers your question: Do you have any other recommendations of any metal genre by Finnish bands that might change my mind?
(To start with try
Skepticism albums: Stormcrowfleet, Lead and Aether),
Shape of Despair albums: Angels of Distress, or Shades of...
For black metal, try Thy Serpent.
Thy Serpent - 1996 - Forests Of Witchery, especially track no. 05 - Like a Funeral Veil of Melancholy
For some dark metal Eternal Tears Of Sorrow. They have really good songs that actually go somewhere. (tracks: Bride of the crimson sea,The last one for life, Nocturnal Strains)

I actually just wanted to just recommend you Thy Serpent, but the mods get anal about how much effort you put into your post, as if it's relevant with the information in it.

Ok, I'll check out The Serpent. I do like RevBiz also and they are from Finland. As far as funeral doom, I was once interested in that little subgenre but I found it to be a bit of overkill.

Indeed, I must say that if you hate the entire finland scene, you've obviously not listened to Wyrd - Rota and Heathen... You should.

Oh, and I disagree with the Burzum part, Burzum's music is nowhere compared to Wyrd's, and there is hardly ANYTHING similar. Wyrd uses better melodies, has better instruments, as it is a bit younger it also has better production, and Wyrd's vocals aren't as weak as Silencer's; and the style is absolutely different.

Imho Beherit sucked as much as Burzum, but that's just me. I hate both.

other posters have made note of this band, but let me just say that, even if Finland had never produced another metal band besides this one, Skepticism alone holds their place as one of the important metal countries (along with Skepticism's predecessors Thergothon). Some other good bands from there too, though I agree i'm not as into the "folky" guys with the exception of some Finntroll.

I am amazed that it took until the middle of page three to bring up Rotten Sound. Murderwerks and Exit are two of the better death/grind releases this decade. And Cycles, though a slight departure from their previous albums, is a great admixture of pissed-off hardcore and proper grind. Very well performed and produced.

Besides, the first two albums were produced by Milo from Nasum. How can you go wrong.

Good thread, all around. Some quality bands; good second tier bands and a fair share of filler.

I wanted to come back here to recommend Wyrd but someone already did it (what a coincidence!). I came back anyway because I really wanted to emphasize on trying Skepticism at least. Especially tracks like: "The Everdarkgreen" or "The March and the stream".

Secondly, a great gem from Finland is October Falls. The album Tuoni is great acoustic folk. The Streams of the End and The Womb Of Primordial Nature are really good folk black metal albums.
The reviews though here on M-A are sort of negative. What I could add against this is that reviewers talk about the sound in general and that's how they judge their music. But that's exactly what it doesn't matter. What it matters at least for me is whether the riffs/melodies make sense or not, whether they go somewhere, and the October Falls dude certainly knows what he's doing.

Another great band from Finland is Tenhi, even if it's irrelevant because they are not metal they have a doom-ish feeling in their folk melodies.

Ya man, long winters or no sunlight for half a year, they get depressed and all.
Other non-doom bands take Prozac, make happy music and go on touring the world, and they piss people off who start threads like this.

Oh hell no. Firstly, don't compare the two. Secondly, Burzum is fucking awesome. How can you possibly not agree and still like bm? Although I do like some Beherit.

I try not to characterize a band by its scene but in relations to the whole genre. I mean..I would compare it to other bands from the country but i would definetly compare it to other bands in the genre before anything else. I can respect what the Finnish bands have done...especailly the folk metal bands.

It's not that I compare bands because of the country or scene. It's just that for some reason alot of Finnish bands don't appeal to me all across many genres of metal. But there ARE good bands from Finland. Beherit, The RevBiz and Demilich. As far as the folk metal bands however, the ones from Finland are the absolute worst! Especially Finntroll. Huppa? What the fuck?

I'm not necessarily a big fan of Finnish black metal. However, old school Finnish death metal is some of my favorite death metal ever recorded. Some true gems (IMO) put out by Finnish bands:

Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
Demilich - Nespithe
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Adramelech - Psychostasia
Mordicus - Dances from Left
Convulse - World Without God
Vomiturition - A Leftover
Disgrace - Grey Misery

etc. The list goes on. Even these albums alone are enough to establish Finland as a great death metal country for someone with my taste in metal.

Hm.. not so much and Demilich have not released enough EPs or full albums to be representative of death metal in Finland. But you shouldn't knock too much of the black metal from there. They have some awesome fans of it there because of all the great bands that show up for the Tuska festival. Go there first and judge it in the flesh because old Finnish black/death will kick your heine.

It's not just lately man, those bands and releases have been touted for years, where have you been for the last 15 years? living in a chinese pipe?

Also check out the new Archgoat track on their myspace, it's fucking fantastic and the vocal approach (as much as I hate to use this similarity) is very close to what I'd call a Black Metal Demilich.

Pretty much all of their recorded material except for a few demos are available for free download from the band's website. There's really nothing else to be dusted off.

Try these bands encompassing many genres , hope this alters your perception of Finnish Metal . Cheers

I know Horna and Skepticism. Pretty good Finn recs. There is a small but devoted following to the whole scene.

North From Here by Sentenced is an album that should not fail to interest anyone who likes real metal, even those who hate Finland. I don't find any album such as this one: it has an awesome black metal atmosphere and some black influence, mixed with some heavy and death metal elements, and a lot of nice riffs and drum parts.

Amok is nice too, but not as great and very different from North From Here. It's more mid-paced, vocals are harsh but not black-sounding anymore, and the overall feel of this album is rather cool.

Sweetbriers by Cryhavoc somewhat reminds me of Amok mixed with Later Sentenced, if you're interested in them.

But really check North From Here...

I am recommending:

And oceans (album Cypher)
Farmakon (very good prog. death)
Sear (killing death/black)
The Wicked (twisted avant-garde metal)
Aberrant Vascular (promising avant-garde metal)

I absolutely agree with Demilich, really good band
(BTW: does anybody have Biolich? http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=2340)

Finland had some really interesting bands that took an established sound and put its spin on it. Innovation then ran rampant -then stale, collided with commercialism, and thus Finland had a burgeoning metal scene. I agree, its run pretty dry by now. Its become a rehash of itself, wish most bands just trying to sound like the last new band from Finland.

Amorphis are a must have. Up to Elegy is all pretty good, but the first ep and album are classics (as previously stated.) A lot of great shit has already been mentioned, but so should Xysma. Withering pick up where Amorphis and Sentenced left off, find 'Gospel of Madness' if you like that sound.

It did have some bright spots back when, which is what originally enchanted me to Finland. Still love the country, but not so much the metal scene.

don't know what you're talking about, Finland has a fuck load of great bm acts , I second these recommendations : Archgoat , Clandestine Blaze ( especially Deliverers of Faith) , Sargeist ( everything after and including S.B.D) Beherit (no words needed) Behexen, also give a listen to these bands : Arsonist Lodge( Perkele, Antikristus ja väärä profeetta) Baptism( melancholic sound with lots of tremolo riffs) Black Death Ritual , Damnatur( ambient raw bm) AN ( don't miss the excellent "Revelation I: World Minus Population" peterott review says it all) Circle of Ouroborus (experimental bm) Prevalent Resistance ( similar to Judas Isacriot with some of the best riffing I've heard in bm) Exordium , Förgjord ( the new album is killer) Flauros.

Well, I love Finland, but I understand where your coming from. I feel the same way about Japan. There are only two exceptions I can think of and they are Balflare and Blood Stained Child (sometimes).

I have no idea why, but overall I just don't like Japanese Metal!!
